Seems it was an Australian affair for the media programme. Melbourne in Particular.

Not a fair comparison lol,the Taycan is just electric version whereas BMW had to make 1 car with both versions.the Taycan is more of a electrified BMW 8 ser

BMW chose to do so. Merc did a electric only version of the E. The 5er and Taycan will be somehow comparable in price so it is unavoidable, even if in my mind the Taycan and Etron GT are a tier above

Bold interior that makes the XM cabin looks like a parts bin job.

Because that’s what the XMs interior is

Thats not true the i5 costs about €70k while the cheapest Taycan is €95k

There is a bit of Dee in the shape of the boot lid and the tail lights.

The 5 the 7 and everything that comes will look very fresh even in 2030 when they finish their cycle and they should not be seen dated next to the "Dee" that comes out in 2025, that being said I am surprised by how modern the G60 looks, they exceeded my assumptions by far

I'm aghast at how they managed to make it so ugly!
The overall car gives me the impression of a child's sketch, when lines don't run parallel nor match the vanishing points and the proportion between elements is wrong.

Front is over designed and full of folds, bulges and creases, in contrast to the super clean sides (apart from the ocean of black plastic) and the rear with the slope which reminds me of Gorden Wagener's jelly mould rear ends.
And about black inserts, do we know if BMW has stock on Meguiars or 3M? Car's a shinny plastic galore.....

Go figure, it doesn't have the grotesque grill of the 7er, but ended up looking even worse.

what is the issue here. I’m genuinely confused! Design is subjective, but in my opinion this is modernly conservative. What did they do wrong? It isn’t controversial at all.

All we all just programmed to immediately dismiss any new BMW now post M3/M4? Every comment on every platform is SO predictable. Do people just do this for likes now?

It’s soooooo tiring to read every singly comment “what were the designers thinking ?!?! “RIP BMW design”. “Buy a G30 while you have the chance”.

I’m really unsure if these comments on Reddit, instagram even here are actually physical people or bots.

Forums are so boring now….
To a large extent it is as you say, and there is also almost always resistance to the new model when the change is so radical and the predecessor was so classic, it is a matter of getting used to it.

While I think the W214 E-class looks better than the G60 5-series, but I must say the i5 does look better than the EQE!
EQE looks like a car that chooses to identify as a sea cucumber.

Jokes aside, I think it’s painfully obvious how the multi-purpose platform of the G60 has resulted in proportions that can’t hold a candle to those of the W214. Sadly, though, the latter doesn’t follow through with that natural advantage; it’s got some iffy styling elements that spoil an otherwise on-point 3 box sedan.

I can live with everything else, but the proportions are just f#cking hideous.

No one forced BMW to make 1 car with both versions besides BMW. You can't shoot yourself in the foot and then use that as an excuse why you you lost a race.

you also cant compare a sedan with a luxury sports car then 😅

I dont know…. It really looks strange from some angles. But strange looking cars seems to be the trend nowadays

do you need this?

But hey, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery and the 508 is a beautifully penned sedan after all.

The beltline rises at a progressively higher angle, as opposed to previous 5ers that visually lifts the rear area. I can definitely see the compromise of the ICE/BEV single platform from this side profile, and that tall rear.

Viewed from the side, the beltline and crease rising in concert, and the compact vertical bulk, do make it look a bit like it's squatting and leaning forward to take a crap

(Which might actually explain the un-BMW, downards pointing, rearward-slanted taillights, because this helps counteract the forward lean and cover some of that bodywork mass in the rear)

But again, they've had to push square pegs through round holes with this ICE/EV shared platform, and all else being equal, they've done quite a remarkable job at shedding visual weight thanks to a few clever tricks: thick black bottom layer, elongated glasshouse (check out the great thinness of the C-pillar) with yet again a Hofmeister kink displaced from the door to the body, no convex surfaces (almost every surface is either slightly concave like a flintstone that's been chipped at, or is covered with black patches: air intakes, grille, roof, diffusor)

One thing that is regrettable is that out of the 10cm extra length only 2cm went into the wheelbase, which isn't good for proportions (I wonder how much of that is actual hardware that needs to be housed in front of the front wheels and how much is empty space).

This car like the 7, it's very color sensitive. A lighter color makes the design more digestible. All of the lines and creases are not that visible - doesn't look that busy.
But man, they threw that black strip to cover the hight due to the batteries... Without it we would see a huge mass of metal, which wouldn't look good at all.
