The Tesla Model X is a battery electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV built by Tesla, Inc. since 2015. Developed from the full-sized sedan platform of the Tesla Model S, the vehicle notably uses falcon wing doors for rear passenger access.
I am interested if we are at the verge of car design not being the number one reason to buy a certain car. The teslas are solid looking cars, some proportions are wierd andy heavy. But its a simple and good looking car. The number one reason to buy these cars are their technological features which separate them from the rest NOT the design.

"At the verge"?

I think we've been there for some time ......how else could you explain the success of the Toyota Camry :D

Seriously though, I believe you are right, I think the days are coming when people no longer have the same passion for cars and driving.

Autonomous/self-driving vehicles will undoubtedly change our relationship to the automobile and the car-culture we have known for a century. The automobile is in the early stages of a major transformation, both technologically and socially.

In warmer regions or during the summer, EVs are an fully-fledged alternative and adequate to use today in urban traffic, short distance ... the same applies for electric scooters, ideal for home to work trips. The great breakthrough needs the progress of actual battery capacity in costs and Wh/kg.
40 years ago was predicted, in the year 2000 the all vehicles would be electric and autonomous driving, controlled and powered by induction bands in the roadway floor. May be things will not happen as quickly as some people had hoped.

Elon Musk: “Quite Likely” Tesla Will Build Truck
Electric Vehicle Impresario Says Pickup Could Be Coming

Tesla Motors is not the first name that comes to mind when you think of pickup trucks. However, that may not always be the case. At a conference in Hong Kong, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk said that it is “quite likely” the company would build an electric truck in the future. At various points over the last several years, Musk has alluded to the possibility of a Tesla-branded pickup truck. The introduction of the Model X crossover was a step in a more utilitarian direction. However, the six-figure, falcon-winged luxury crossover will likely live a much more pampered life than most pickups.

Additional challenges posed by pickups above and beyond the typical load and duty cycle for cars is the blunter aerodynamics of a pickup, as well as the negative impact on range of added payload or trailer weight. The Model X has a claimed tow capacity of 5,000 pounds. However, the company has not offered any comment on how much the Model X’s range would be impacted with a full-weight trailer. It’s not an issue of power, with the Model X producing a whopping combined 762 hp and 713 lb-ft of torque, but rather the power draw from the battery and how long it can be sustained under load. The Model X has an EPA rated range of up to 257 miles.

You can hear Musk’s comment about the possibility of a Tesla pickup in the video below around the 24:55 minute mark on the timeline.

Tesla is calling them falcon doors. But we know who had then first:D

As awesome as the doors are, I just dont find the model X appealing in terms of design. I'd still pick the cheaper Model S over the X any day.

There is no way around it, this damn thing is UGLY, like truely ugly.
Its like that pontiac aztec.. horrible..

This car is shaped like an egg, but I like it. Hopefully they will improve interior on Model 3.

Btw. I dont see gullwing as practical door solution, yes it is attractive but opening is so slow. And what if sensors go broke, you cant open your rear doors? Even driver/passanger door is electric, what if something goes wrong, can you open it?

their focus is at the wrong place, those doors are probably damn expensive. i guess they have som safety feature to blow off the hinges like the SLS had if the car ends up upside down?

all that money, put that into making a decent interior, plastic everywhere..

if you look at the video by saabkyle notice how the driver door rattles when closing.

there is so much more to do before you dump money into gullwing doors on a damn SUV.

They needed some unique headline grabbing feature, so this is it. Tesla is entering the automotive market with the approach of a tech company, they will learn from their mistakes along the way. They are building their own factory for the cars, the huge battery manufacturing facilities as well as the electrical charging network not just in America, but around the world as well, so they can only do so much at once. After they have build a solid foundation, I hope their next generation of cars will be vastly better, because the Germans are coming really fast.

Youi hoped in vain, they didn't.

The Tesla Model X Electric SUV Has More Reliability Problems than It Can Count

Up until recently, only a handful of Tesla Model X SUVs made it on the road, and a large part of them were in the hands of company employees or long-time supporters of the brand.

Now that the production is finally starting to ramp up and more and more people are receiving the car they've waited for so long, we begin to get an idea of just how ready the Model X actually was to be sold to the public. And, unfortunately, the answer is "not that much."

As with any new model, some minor problems are perfectly acceptable if you want to be one of the early adopters. For all the testing the vehicles normally undergo before launch, some flaws are bound to escape the attention of the quality testers. It happens with every brand and is the reason why the more rational buyers won't rush out to get a new model the instant it comes out, but wait for a year or two until these issues are sorted out.

With the Model X, though, it's hard to do that. The vehicle already has a very long waiting list, so if you've managed to get there, you'll buy the car whenever it's ready and just be glad you got it. That is until you get locked on the outside or you helplessly watch as the falcon doors smash into the scenery without anything you can do about it.

The Model X has already gone through a significant recall that involved 2,700 units - almost all the vehicles available at the time - over a safety issue with the rear seats, but it is now facing a multitude of problems. Users have taken to support forums to complain about the problems they face, some of which are forcing them to sideline the car until a solution is found.

British publication The Guardian quotes a Tesla Model X owner complaining about his experience: “My car has been back into the shop twice, and the bugs are still everywhere. The P door does not open, the D door opens to different positions, no parking feature, sometimes doors won’t close unless you force it and when you close it sounds like metal to metal. I could go on and on.”

In response, a Tesla spokesperson said, “While we have seen some issues with early Model X builds, the issues are not widespread, and we are working closely with each owner to respond quickly and proactively to address any problems. We will continue to do so until each customer is fully satisfied. This commitment is one of the reasons why 98% of our customers say they will buy another Tesla as their next car.”

Tesla went through a similar experience when the Model S was first introduced and it managed to keep people happy by taking care of the problems quickly. The real worry here is what will happen if the Model 3, the company's first mass-market product, goes through a similar phase? Will Tesla have the resources necessary to deal with a huge potential onslaught of requests? Or will it learn from its mistakes and finally get it right on the first try?

Free publicity and hype! :)

N/A V8 wins over fancy doors any day, it is sad to see how tech gadgetry is being seen as "cooler" than a Ferrari N/A V8.
