Boxster/Cayman (987) [Official] Porsche Cayman GT4


The Porsche 987 is the internal designation for the second generation Porsche Boxster sports car, built from 2004 to 2012. In 2005, it was joined in the range by the new Cayman fastback coupé (project 987c). Production: July 2004–2012 (Boxster), August 2005–2012 (Cayman). It was succeeded by the Porsche 981 in 2012.

Don't think I could pick a GT4 over a 911R.

Yes, me too, if "pick" means - which one would you rather own? I would be very surprised if most didn't go for the 911R. It obviously has more "specialness" going for it.

But, a friend who owns many GT cars put it best (he said it in the context of his RS vs GT4) - if you already own both and enjoy them both regularly enough, a year into the ownership when the novelty has worn off, which keys would you rather reach for, for a spirited drive across some mountain roads?

In that scenario, specialness of one over the other is kind of moot and "picking" one over the other has no consequence besides the size of the smile on one's face. And in that situation, his choice was the 4 (over his RS). While the R is a different proposition to the RS, I wouldn't be surprised if at least a few "pick" the GT4.

Well said. I've got a 981 Spyder and it is already bordering on too fast for the road. I just don't see where I would be able to enjoy driving an RS anywhere but on track.
 
Porsche Cayman GT4 looks spot-on with Martini racing stripes

We've seen a lot of cars wearing Martini racing stripes, but few of them look quite as fitting as this Porsche Cayman GT4.

Having won Le Mans three times in the 1970s with the Martini Racing Team – and slapped the livery on an array of sports cars over the course of the decades since – Porsche holds at least as much claim to the livery as do Lancia, Ford, or even Williams. It's about time, then, that the Cayman GT4 – close as it is to racing spec – gets the treatment, and fortunately the folks at Generator Design answered the call.

The Windsor, Ontario-based design firm applied the stripes and logo to the white bodywork in classic style, and even threw in a dark grey stripe to go with the red, navy and blue to give it a bit more of a modern touch. And that number 22, in case you were wondering, just so happens to be the same number that adorned the 917K in which Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko (now head of Red Bull's racing program) won the 24 Hours in '71.

We think the result looks pretty outstanding, to the point that we can't help but wonder why Weissach doesn't offer it as an option direct from the factory. We guess this one wouldn't be special then, now would it?

Porsche's product expansion doesn’t only revolve around the 911, as a more powerful version of the Cayman GT4 is said to be in the cards as well.
'R' suffix, but AutoExpress states that the vehicle will actually be known as the Cayman GT4 RS, citing undisclosed sources with knowledge of Porsche's plans.

Building on top of the already popular Cayman GT4, the more potent member is believed to drop the 911 Carrera S-derived 3.8-liter flat-six lump, which is good for 380 horsepower, in favor of a 4.0-liter unit, whose output remains unknown at this time.

This will allow the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) faster than the current GT4, which needs 4.4 seconds, and top speed will probably increase too, from 295 km/h (183 mph) to over 300km/h (186+mph). Besides the extra oomph, the Cayman GT4 RS is expected to get a new body kit, in addition to possible chassis revisions.

Before Porsche releases the Cayman GT4 RS, two other GT models will be launched: the facelifted 911 GT3, which could be introduced as early as the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, in March, and an even more exciting model, the GT2. The latter is believed to come with the same engine as the current Turbo S, producing as much as 650 horsepower and pushing the output to the rear wheels, probably through a seven-speed PDK automatic gearbox.
 
Interesting that it seems based on 981 than 718 chassis... probably portends it will remain NA. My wish list - fix gearing, massage the power curve. Everything else is perfect.
