2016 Porsche Cayman Facelift

The facelifted Porsche Cayman has been spied virtually undisguised.

Looking instantly recognizable, the updated model has a familiar design but adopts a new front bumper with revised intakes and new LED daytime running lights. The headlights have also been updated but unfortunately the changes are hidden by photo-realistic camouflage.

The styling changes are more subtle at the rear as there's a modified rear bumper with new reflectors. The taillights have also been revised but, once again, the camouflage hides the details.

Interior changes are expected to be fairly limited but the model is slated to adopt a new steering and a rotary drive mode selector. We can also expect a new Porsche Communication Management System (PCM) with multi-touch gesture recognition, Apple CarPlay compatibility and a significantly improved navigation functions.

Engine options are still shrouded in secrecy but Matthias Müller has previously confirmed the model will be offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder. The executive declined to reveal details but previous reports have suggested the 1.6-liter unit will produce 210 bhp (156 kW) while the 2.0-liter engine will have 286 bhp (213 kW) and 295 lb-ft (399 Nm) of torque. There have also been rumors about an even more powerful 2.5-liter engine that could produce up to 395 bhp (295 kW).

Porsche 718 Boxster & Cayman announced

Porsche 718 Cayman

Porsche has announced the facelifted Boxster and Cayman will be renamed the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman.

While the name sounds superfluous, Porsche says the 718 designation is meant to recall the ground-breaking Porsche 718 from 1957. The name also recalls the company's history of offering a flat four-cylinder engine.

As Porsche points out, the 718 RSK scored a class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958 thanks to a powerful and fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine which produced 142 hp (105 kW). The company's 919 Hybrid LMP1 also uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and it recently won the manufacturer’s and driver’s championship titles in the World Endurance Championship.

Besides announcing the name change, Porsche confirmed the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will show more similarities both in terms of design and performance. The company declined to elaborate but previous reports have suggested the cars will be offered with turbocharged 1.6- and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines that produce up to 286 hp (213 kW).

Both models will be introduced next year and Porsche confirmed the 718 Boxster will be cost more than the 718 Cayman.

The 718 inclusion in the model designation could be a marketing initiative to mitigate possible negative reactions to the 4 cylinder engine change.

Interesting that the 718 Boxster costs more than the 718 Cayman. The pricing strategy for the original Cayman was genius and was an example of how to switch the game up (and rake in profits).

And the official press release:

Mid-engine sports cars from Porsche get new names

Boxster and Cayman now to be marketed as 718 model series

Stuttgart. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman – these will be the new names of the two-door mid-engine sports cars from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG effective with the 2016 model changeover. The Stuttgart car manufacturer’s 718 designation is a reference to the ground-breaking sports car of this type of the year 1957, which enjoyed much success in renowned car races. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are showing more similarities – both visual and technical. In the future, both will have equally powerful four-cylinder flat engines with turbocharging. The Roadster will be positioned at a higher price level than the Coupé – as is done for the 911 models. Porsche will introduce the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman over the course of 2016.

The 718 model series is a continuation of the proven four-cylinder concept and the history of distinguished Porsche sports cars. The latest example is the 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car, which also has a highly-efficient, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with just 2 litres of displacement. So, not only did Porsche finish first and second in the 24 hours of Le Mans, but most recently it also won the manufacturer’s and driver’s championship titles in the WEC World Endurance Championship. With these victories, the 919 Hybrid has opened up the prospects for the performance potential of future sports car engines from Porsche.

History of the 718: four-cylinder flat engine has many car racing victories
Four-cylinder flat engines have a long tradition at Porsche – and they have enjoyed incredible success. In the late 1950s, the 718 – a successor to the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder – represented the highest configuration level of the four-cylinder flat engine. Whether it was competing at the 12-hour race in Sebring in 1960 or at the European Hill Climb Championship that ran between 1958 and 1961, the Porsche 718 prevailed against numerous competitors with its powerful and efficient four-cylinder flat engine. The 718 took first place in 1959 and 1960 at the legendary Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans race 1958, the 718 RSK with its 142-hp four-cylinder engine scored a class victory.

Porsche 919 Hybrid: technological front-runner for production cars
In 2014, Porsche returned to the top category of the famous endurance race in Le Mans and the WEC world endurance championship with the 919 Hybrid race car. The LMP1 vehicle, which was designed for extreme efficiency, is the most complex race car that Porsche has ever built. It serves as a platform for fundamental technology research for future production models – combining two different energy recovery systems with a two-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine.

No wonder Mercedes is also downsizing it's SLC engines, in particular the V8
Is there no where for me to go.
I take an interest in the V8 SLC, and then it is morphed into a V6
Then I take an interest in the Boxster, it too morphs into a Flat 4
ah well.
I think it's begining to look like PEDAL power for me. (sigh)

Porsche 718 2.0 and 2.5 turbo engines detailed

Porsche 718 teaser

The Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman due next year will be offered with newly developed 2.0 and 2.5 turbocharged gasoline engines.

We all know the facelifted Boxster and Caymanwill make the switch to turbocharging and now we have some concrete details about the new motors. Autocar had the opportunity to take the 718 Boxster for a quick spin and managed to find out it will have a flat-four unit codenamed “9A2B4T.” It has a single turbo and is capable of developing approximately 300 hp (220 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque, with the redline set at a little over 7,400 rpm.

As for the Boxster S and Cayman S, the engine in these two will have a 2.4- or 2.5-liter displacement and power will stand at around 360 hp (265 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). The turbocharger in this engine could use Porsche's proprietary Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) as implemented in the 911 Turbo.

According to Matthias Hofstetter, head of 718 powertrain development, engine packaging was a bit tricky. Ultimately, the job was done after the two front cylinders of the old engine were replaced by the turbocharger. The engine modifications have brought a bump in weight for the Boxster from 2,888 lbs (1,309 kg) to 3,086 lbs (1,400 kg), but even so performance is great. The standard Boxster model jumps to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.5 seconds whereas the Boxster S needs just 5 seconds. Thanks to downsizing, fuel efficiency has increased by about 4 mpg (1 liter / 100 km less than before).

Both models will be revealed early next year, with a public debut likely to take place in March during the Geneva Motor Show.

Is it me, or is that a big jump in weight? I mean, even after lopping off two cylinders and then replacing it with a turbo and its associated plumbing, an almost 200 lbs gain is a quite a bit.

200 lbs is a lot. However, the whole back of the car was redesigned. They also changed the structure of the chassis as far as I know. So the weight gain might be because of all the items related to the new engines and the redesign of the rear of the car. Also there was no room for direct air cooling. Instead water cooling was used for the intercoolers.

Porsche’s 718 Cayman caught in Italy driving around

b6cf2930f603b6ccaa89a0f1e0cee3d8.webp

Here are some fresh scoop photos of a Porsche 718 Cayman prototype driving around Lecce in Italy.
Our friends over at INDAV Designspotted the fixed-roof brother of the 718 Boxster 30km away from the company-owned Nardo proving ground.

We know that the latest entry-level Porsche has been subjected perhaps to the biggest change in its career, ditching the iconic flat-six engine for a pair of all-new four-cylinder turbocharged engines.

The range will likely mirror that of the Boxster’s, meaning a 296hp 2.0-litre flat-four for the base model and a more powerful 345hp 2.5-litre unit for the S models. The new engines are not only more powerful, but also more efficient with Porsche claiming fuel economy improvements of up to 13 per cent.

As you would expect, all the new styling features that debuted in the 718 Boxster like the new lights all around and the redesigned front and rear bumpers will pass to the fixed-roof model as well as the subtle changes inside, including the addition of the much more modern infotainment systems.

And if you belong in the purists category, currently boiling with fury because of Porsche's switch to turbocharging, you can find some peace at the fact that the next Cayman GT4 is likely to keep its natural aspirated flat-six heart as the company wants to keep its hardcore audience satisfied as much as possible.

The latest reports suggest that Porsche is going to offer the new 718 Cayman at a more affordable price than the Boxster for the first time, as the company wants to position their mid-engine roadster more upmarket.

Thanks to INDAV Design for sharing the photos!

Got offered to take the new boxster gts out on a spin today.

Now it’s all fun and games to talk loud and talk E63S vs M5 and gt3s and gt2s..

This car was so much fun, so agile so responsive, it just floored me. What more do you need ? It leaves most of the traffic in the dust, it moves like a viper snake and it’s just to much fun for around 70k.

Exhaust sound was epic, the looks you get if that’s important to you are more attention than you will need. Had some kids shouting at me asking if it’s a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

Just an epic little thing, low fast and mean.

I jumped into my e class and it felt like a damn tractor both the performance and the seating position.

5/5 stars

Trying out the 911 GTS soon.

You should try one on a track or at a Porsche experience centre. Your mind will be blown away by the limits of the car. You can drive like you do in Forza without getting into trouble.

The Boxster and Cayman are exceptional. Only those who have never driven either would discredit them a poor man's Porsche.
