Golf [Official] New Volkswagen Golf VIII

Overall, the GTI looks appealing. I love the tartan-fabric seat inserts. It's a silly thing to gush over, but it's a nice break from the usual monotony.

They all do it sadly. Can't think of a new hatch offered in 3 door configuration anymore.
As a former owner of a Golf GTI of the third generation this makes me feel weird, the 3 doors was the only GTI, that was a lot of the charm.
There are only the small Fiesta, Mini and some other, the Mini is a unique case where the 3 doors quintuples the sales of the 5 doors.
Maybe one day good taste will return and come back evolved

Does anyone know if the mk8 GTI has a mechanical front diff as standard?
They say electronically controlled locking of the diff. It could be like in BMW M an electronically controlled LSD (elcontrolled clutch pack) or an electronically simulated (by the brakes) LSD, which in fact is an open diff using the ESP and ABS to simulate a locking effect. The former is one of the best solutions in the market and the later is a cheap cheating. Maybe it's the former. What is clear is that it is not a mechanically locked diff.

I know that the mechanical LSD was offered as part of the performance pack and was standard on the TCR. A few other hothatches are increasingly being equipped with them.

The GTI/GTD/GTE range accounts for 40% of Golf sales in the UK. VW might know that a large percentage of those customers will not push their cars and just want a car with adequate driving enjoyment.

Q&A: Volkswagen tech boss on the new Golf GTI and hot hatches

Q&A: Volkswagen tech boss on the new Golf GTI and hot hatches | Autocar

How important is it for the Golf GTI to be a true driver’s car?
“It’s important to get the car to reach the fans. We can talk very openly: looking back four
Golf generations ago, the GTI was like a trim line, and then
Volkswagen decided to get it back to the GTI. The GTI is a special car that makes your heart beat faster. I can promise that you will love this car.”

Why did you rule out a hybrid powertrain for the GTI?
“I like the Golf 1.5 TSI with the mild hybrid, and you feel the low-end torque. But it adds weight, and you don’t need the extra torque on the 2.0 TSI engine. It doesn’t give you much at the high end for a performance car. “In the future, we will have lots of mild hybrids to lower fuel consumption, but on the sporty side you will see combustion engines with new refinements, or you go to plug-in hybrid or electric.”

Why upgrade the power output of the GTE?
“It’s important that the GTE feels more like a GTI. With the new model, the handling distance to the GTI is pretty small and the acceleration and braking are similar.

“The GTE has a very smooth electric powertrain. For me, it’s on the next level in terms of driving, handling and agility. I’m a GTI fan and I really think for the first time this GTE is an option for the GTI driver. I think there will be some movement from the GTI to the GTE in future.”

Does the hot hatch have a future?
“With electrification, we will see some other possibilities for compact sporty cars. We are launching the ID [electric vehicle] family and for sure in that we will see sporty versions, but in a different way. I believe that we will have the internal combustion engine in parallel with plug-in hybrid cars for a long time. Therefore the hot hatch will continue.”

The GTI uses the same upgraded version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform as the regular Golf Mk8, with suspension by MacPherson struts at the front and multi-links at the rear. It’s also fitted with a new Vehicle Dynamics Manager, which controls the electric differential lock (XDS) and optional adaptive dampers (Dynamic Chassis Control) to improve the balance between maximum comfort and driving dynamics.

Quoted from VW's newsroom site:
"The XDS electronic differential lock improves the traction and handling of front-wheel-drive models. In technical terms, the XDS system, initially developed for the Golf GTI, is an extension of the electronic differential lock (EDS) integrated in the ESP system. As soon as the electronics detect excessive unloading of the inside wheel of the driven front axle during fast cornering, the ESP hydraulic system builds up braking system pressure in a targeted way on this wheel to restore optimum traction. This way, the XDS acts as a limited-slip differential to compensate for the understeer typical of front-wheel-drive cars during fast cornering. Thanks to XDS, handling becomes more precise and more neutral."

So, it is not a traditional limited slip differential.

This GTI has nothing to do with the 7th gen one. The rims are awful and the exterior kit uninspired.

Part of the problem is the basis is worse thid time around. That interior offers less possibilities than the previous one. And the side profile is totally anonymus. It looks worse than the Golf VII, with a lower shoulder line.

Not planning to change my GTI, but if I were in the market for a hot hatch, I would go for the A35 rather than this.

What it has to do with the Mk7 are the same engine, the same transmission and the same platform. MB is making more changes to a LCI than this 'new' model.
