EDIT:
For reference, this is a thread spin-off from:
Some provisional thoughts on the pros and cons of the 2024 E-class vs. 5 series.

Engine - The inline 6 of the 5 is maybe the best 6 cylinder engine ever made. The E's inline 6 is fine but no one can touch the power and smoothness of the BMW 6 cylinder.

Exterior - The new 5 series is simply horrible. There's really no other way to describe it. It lacks the fluidity and grace of the outgoing G60 and the number "5" molded into the C pillar is childish and would be more at home on a Subaru or Nissan. I really wanted to love the redesign of the 5 but it's abysmal. The E is, by contrast, fluid and graceful and, I think, will age well. The taillights on the new E are idiotic with the three pointed star being used as taillights. A very immature decision on the part of MB. But, absent this, a timeless and elegant exterior design.

Interior - Aesthetically the new E is gorgeous with plenty of great tech (probably too much in many cases like the inclusion of a selfie camera for doing zoom meetings I guess and some really stupid childish video games) that seems quite well implemented. A couple of quibbles here. As in the past, the center transmission tunnel is too wide and intrudes on passenger foot room. And there are some cheap looking and feeling plastic pieces that don't belong on a car of this class.

Seat comfort - Long a BMW weak point, the front seats of the E have always been superb and I expect nothing less in this newest version. Seat comfort in the BMW is just OK and really should be quite a bit better.

Driving dynamics - BMW has justifiably ruled this area for some time. The 5 drives very, very nicely and imparts a fair amount of excitement. Not as agile or responsive as a 3 series to be sure, but damn good for a car of its size and weight. We'll see about the new E but I doubt it'll offer the driving experience of the 5.

Reliability - Both quite good though the BMW clearly has a bit of an edge here. As I buy my cars and drive them for 5-6 years, this is an important factor that weighs toward the BMW. Thankfully the MB has good reliability, just not quite on a par with the BMW.

Safety - Both superb.

Anyway, just wanted to share some random thoughts and see what some of you thought.

Did you guys notice there is a rudimentary configurator available on the German website? You can try the different colours there
Do you happen to have a link?

the outgoing G60
G30?

The inclination of many is towards the evolution of a design that touched them deeply.

As bad as they are boring, as I consider the G30 and G11 as "backward" evolutions of their beautiful predecessors, I consider the new C-Class much less "sexy" than its predecessor, in all three cases they take the previous success and exploit it for 7 more years but, with slight adjustments to its same philosophy, I estimate that the E-Class will be something similar (I haven't seen one yet).

An example of successful evolution would be from E21 to E30 and from E12 to E28.
One of the most complicated things in business is defining a completely new design that is as successful as the previous one.

As much as you can understand that the new E-Class is nice but boring and very safe, I can't understand how the G60 would be called "horrible" based solely on the love for the G30

People don't like the G60 for a variety of reasons. At the end of the day it's just a car.

You don't like the E class because it's "boring". You like the 5er because it looks different.

Neither has anything to do with how good the cars look, merely an observation of the meta of vehicle design. Which to me is meaningless.

Imo the W214 looks better than the G60. But preference is preference. I can't understand why you like the G60. Does that matter? No.

Ehh, no and no, I like both a lot
For me, the E is boring because it is repetitive compared to the previous one, just as much as the G60 is not because it is totally new and that marks my personal preference, not my taste for both.

With E they could have gone a little further respecting the previous one, but they didn't, not enough to "motivate" me more than what BMW did it could be more accomplished with more work.

When the F10 came out the W212 was not enough, not even close, on the contrary the G30 did not come close to the heels of the W213, the same applies to me today IMO

It has a lot to do with it, it is the law, BMW could continue manufacturing the E30 and everyone would say that it is still beautiful but after so many years it would get a little boring and you would see other options no matter how much you like it.
I can't understand why you like the G60. Does that matter? No.
If it matters a lot, there are N amount of variables of what a design "could have been" infinite I would say so understanding why you like something or not before spending 1 billion to develop it is very important

While I really liked it on a photos, I was dissapointed when I saw it at a dealer. Maybe because it is in silver and without AMG package (it is base model). I didnt liked G60 on photos, but I liked it much more when I saw it at a dealer. I didnt drive it yet. Like mine outgoing E class new one looks small, while G60 looks really muscular. I went from BMW F10 to W213, but I think next one will be G60. But first I need to drive them to make a decision.

I've never understood how (or why) someone would spend ~$70k on a car like this and get it with a buzzy 4 cylinder engine.

And yet, I'm guessing that 4 cylinder engines represent about 80% of E class sales.

Interesting as my experience was the exact opposite. I've been extremely happy with my two 5 series cars (F10 and G30) and I was looking forward to the G60 figuring I'd make that my third 5'er.

I saw and drove the new G60 and was not impressed. Other than the upgraded tech stuff it really felt like a step down from my G30. I parked my G30 right next to the G60 and couldn't avoid recognizing that the G60 was just hideous. I realized I was making one excuse after another to justify trying to like the G60 before I thought, "why the hell should I feel the need to talk myself into the purchase of a ~$75k vehicle."

Took a closer look at the W214 and, the more I saw and read, the more I liked it. I put an order in for E450.

I guess it's the same with the 5-series as most models are 4-cylinders, except for the 540i and upcoming M5. The 520i/520d were probably the most popular models in the G30 range so it would probably be the same with this latest model.

Maybe because those cars are more or less evolution. Before F10 I had E60 and before I had E92. So maybe Mercedes was something new/different and I bought W213. Now I have it since 2017 and after all those years I want something different again. I didnt drive E class yet, because I was waiting for G60. I will test them in a same week.

These statements, as drastic as they are dramatic, make me think and begin to doubt them...mmmm

E53 HYBRID
Its a good choice for the E53 but I do believe AMG will need to bring out an E63 model as well. The W213 E63 S was popular and was very well received by the motoring press, so I don't believe they will let the BMW M5 hold the monopoly and be dominating the sales in this sector.
