Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series in Works, GT3 Version Not for U.S., E-Cell Unclear

Officials at Mercedes-Benz’s in-house tuner AMG have confirmed to Motor Trend that the street-legal version of the SLS AMG GT3 racer will not come to the U.S. We’re also told that the company is still debating bringing the SLS E-Cell to America. They also confirmed that a hardcore Black Series version of SLS is in the works.

“We absolutely have to do a Black Series” SLS AMG, Member of the Board of Directors and Head of Vehicle Development for AMG, Tobias Moers, told Motor Trend.

The other hardcore SLS variant, the upcoming street-legal version of the GT3 racecar, is not coming to America, Moers said. While it’s needed for homologation in Europe, it doesn’t race in the U.S. so it isn’t essential. AMG doesn’t think the low potential sales volume justifies the massive expense of re-certifying the car for the U.S. market.

It’s a similar issue for the upcoming SLS E-Cell electric sports car. Mercedes plans to launch the car in 2012 as a 2013 model in Europe but hasn’t decided whether the car will head to our shores. The company is again concerned about the low predicted volume and the cost of certifying the car. The price hasnt been announced but Moers says it will certainly be less than double the standard car’s price, but how much less is still unknown. We’d guess anywhere between $250,000 and $350,000 is realistic.

“AMG does not do money losing projects,” Moers said. “We can’t afford to.”

The E-Cell replaces the engine and related equipment in the standard SLS with a carbon-fiber battery cell running up the middle of the car between the seats. The battery and electric motor are expected to add 1100 to 1300 pounds to the curb weight, but weight savings in other areas could offset the gain by 175 to 220 pounds. Mercedes is targeting a curb weight of no more than 4400 pounds. Moers says the advantage of a lower center of gravity thanks to the battery helps offset the weight gain’s effects on the handling.

“The E-Cell is not far away from the standard SLS on the track,” he said.

The massive battery will power an electric motor at the rear axle with an estimated 525 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. The motor is being co-developed with High Performance Engines, Mercedes’ F1 engine builder and the only engine builder to win an F1 World Championship with a KERS system.

Mercedes says its battery will be able to handle repeated charging with a Level 3 440-volt power supply, something other companies have indicated could damage a battery over time. Mercedes says its liquid cooling system will protect the battery and in fact the company has been charging prototypes on 440-volt power for over a year with no ill effects.

On the other end of the spectrum, Mercedes is also concerned about how customers experience the E-Cell. The car will make some kind of noise, but not a spaceship sound. Moers says it needs to have a deep, low-frequency sound befitting an AMG. He said they might introduce some vibration to the otherwise smooth car to give the driver more emotional feedback.

Both gullwing and Roadster variants of the E-Cell are being developed, but whether they will roll out together or separately depends on customer demand. In the meantime, Mercedes is busy courting current and prospective Tesla owners and getting their feedback on what the high-performance electric car buyer wants.

I really hope the Black gets a V12... and maybe this time the chassis can handle the power, unlike the SL Black. That would be fantastic. :)

So is Mercedes still making an GT3 version and a Black series version of the SLS? I assumed they were the same thing. If not then what are the differences between them?

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Now Available in Seven Variants
THE MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG COUPÉ BLACK SERIES AND SLS AMG COUPÉ ELECTRIC DRIVE WILL MARKET LAUNCH IN JUNE 2013

Ask someone to name a Mercedes AMG model and chances are the first model that will pop into their head is the SLS AMG, and for good reason. It is a car that is in a league of it’s own, as much a sculpture as it is a race car, it epitomizes the luxury Mercedes is known for and the performance AMG is known for.

The Mercedes SLS AMG previously came in five different variants, but apparently that wasn’t enough, because now Mercedes has added two additional variants to the SLS AMG lineup – and we’re glad they did.The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive. This means that the SLS AMG now comes in a total of seven different variants, model diversity unmatched by competitors. No matter which SLS AMG you choose, a Coupé, Roadster, GT, Black Series variant, electrically powered gullwing model or thoroughbred GT3 racing version – the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is simply the best.

We’ll be taking a more in-depth look at both the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive throughout the day but read on below for a quick overview.

First off, the questions we get the most. When can I buy it and how much does it cost?

Thankfully, for those eager to purchase one of the new SLS AMG Coupes, you won’t have to wait long. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive will have their market launch in June 2013. The prices in Germany (incl. 19% VAT) will be:
  • SLS AMG Coupé Black Series: €249,900
  • SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive: €416,500
The SLS AMG Coupé was the first car to be developed in-house by Mercedes-AMG and was first unveiled at the 2009 IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt/Main. The gullwing model was followed a couple years later in 2011 by the SLS AMG Roadster as well as the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car. The racing version of the gullwing car proved to the world the performance abilities of AMG during the 2012 motorsport season when the SLS AMG GT3 Race Car racked up nine championship titles and 43 race victories.

2012 marked the premiere of the SLS AMG GT, which is available in Coupé and Roadster versions, followed later by the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive. This means that the model range has now grown to seven variants in all. Not only does Mercedes-AMG boast the widest model range in the super sports car segment, its diversity is also unprecedented and covers all manner of customer requirements and preferences. The power outputs of the road-going models range from 420 kW (571 hp) up to 552 kW (751 hp).

Production in Sindelfingen and Affalterbach

The specific assembly area for the SLS AMG is located in the largest Mercedes-Benz production plant in Sindelfingen. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine comes directly from the AMG engine workshop in Affalterbach, where it is hand-assembled according to the traditional “one man, one engine” philosophy.

The SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is being built in an exclusive production run directly at Mercedes-AMG company headquarters in Affalterbach, where a team of highly qualified specialists assemble the purely electrically powered super sports car by hand in a newly installed Manufaktur hand-finishing section.

40 major accolades for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The SLS AMG has succeeded in winning numerous comparison tests against a host of international competitors conducted by the world’s motoring press – both as the gullwing model and the Roadster. Since its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 2009 and the presentation of the SLS AMG Roadster in May 2011, the super sports car from Mercedes-AMG has picked up over 40 awards – including such major accolades as the “German Design Award”, the “Red Dot Design Award”, the “Golden Steering Wheel 2009″, the “iF product design award”, “Classic of the Future”, “Sports Car of the Year”, “Best Performance Car” and “Legends on Wheels”.

Almost forgotten about this car, everyone is focusing on the newest and latest hyper cars from Mclaren, Porsche and Ferrari.

Yeah the timing is kinda bad, but then again he Benz won't cost half of what those cars are expected to cost. I think the closest in price will be the Porsche. The SLS BS is a throwback compared to these rolling tech/test labs from MC, Porsche and Feeawree.

Looks like production will end in June 2014. Suspect MB needs the capacity for a new model? :)

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Production to End in Less Than a Year

One of the most trusted Mercedes-related sources on the Internet has just issued a bomb. According to MB Passion, the production of the SLS AMG will end as early as June 2014.

With the modern Gullwing being launched just four years ago, at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, it would mean that the supercar would have one of the shortest life spans in recent Mercedes years.

According to the German blog, the “standard” SLS AMG Coupe and Roadster will stop production from January 2014, with the GT version and the Black Series being the only models that will still be manufactured at the Sindelfingen plant until June, when the factory will be retooled for the C190 project.

We're not sure what to say of this, since every other report until now had been saying that the upcoming C190 project, aka the “Baby SLS”, would complement the SLS AMG, not replace it. Speaking of which, that model is said to be developed on a shorter but somewhat similar platform with the SLS, keeping the front-mid engine and transaxle transmission layout. Some even believe that it's going to be used on future Aston Martins as well.
