:eusa_doh: What are they smoking???

Wow. That really has to be a joke. Like, how can you come to terms with that design? Who can? How can you even sell it knowing it looks like that.

Evo's Chris Harris is caretaker of one for a few months.

A week last Thursday, a very nice man delivered a Mercedes SLS to my house. The delivery note suggested that the car wouldn’t need to be returned for several months, leading to the situation I currently find myself in: I have an SLS to use on a daily basis.

Short of inheriting a vast sum of money or finding yourself transmogrified into a young Steve McQueen, not many better things can happen to a bloke. I adore the SLS.

Of course, The 1000 mile threshold was adjusted down to the 1500km equivalent - 938 miles. I see no reason why our continental friends should be allowed to rev the tits of their Gullwings 62 miles before we can.
Two-weeks later, I’m only just about to emerge from this self-imposed purgatory.

Of course an SLS with 2/3 throttle and a 4500rpm rev-limit is still faster than most traffic, it still cuts a brilliantly different shape and still makes me feel rather better about myself than I strictly deserve to. But this is one of the great road-car engines and resisting the temptation to bust what is probably not an especially important routine takes discipline. I suspect it’s the transmission that requires more gentle handling than an engine which will have spent time on the bench before being slotted in behind that front axle line.

There are two benefits to the tedium of running in a motor car. It gives the keeper (sadly not owner in this instance) a chance to bond with a machine of the SLS’s power in a more gentle manner, as opposed the wham-bam explosions of my shorter machine-man relationships.
And it also gives him the chance to decide where he will first use that performance. I have thought about this long and hard, and selected a road and a time-of-day expressly for the purpose. Of course I could have avoided all of this by simply driving to Nice-and-back the day it arrived, but I've been a bit busy lately.

Still, as you can see, that time is drawing near."

CHRIS HARRIS: Running-in a Mercedes SLS blog on Evo Community by Monkey Harris

Some of his entries from Twitter.

"Gullwing doors: the practical side. 1) Airport car parks. Big coupe doors don't fit the spaces. The SLS does."

"Gullwing doors: the practical side 2) Hard shoulder rummage for Severn Bridge cash. Much safer. (and cooler)"

"I now have an SLS with a fully-usable rev-counter. I even recorded 'the moment'. Will post tomorrow. SLS is FAR more effective than Prozac."

Absolutely brilliant (and elegant) solution by Mercedes to the problem posed by coupes with long doors.:eusa_clap

Argh, looking at these pics reminds me of how I don't even FIT in an SLS (too tall at 6'4, and yes, my head banged against the damn door when I got out)! Why is M-B making that damn thing so tiny inside the cabin? :eusa_doh:

I saw one flying by the other night, it was White with some black accents. It certainly has presence.

K/A there is no sports car on the level of the SLS that will fit someone who is 6foot4 tall. Every tried to sit in an Aston-Martin or Ferrari?

I have in some Ferrari's, and it's usually a tight squeeze. Oh well, it keeps things simple, I can have even more of an excuse to indulge in Luxo Sedans. Not to mention, it can save me money in the long run, lol.

The A7 I drove also didn't have enough headroom for me. It was passable for a Test Drive, but it would be a problem if I owned it. Not to mention, I'm sure having such a close gap between your head and the roof can not be good for Safety purposes.

Mercedes SLS AMG Emergency Medical concept announced

Mercedes has announced plans to introduce the SLS AMG Emergency Medical concept at RETTmobil 2011.

Designed to draw attention to the company's lineup of safety vehicles, the one-off concept has traditional livery, a prominent light bar and the latest communications technology.

In the standard car, power is provided by a 6.3-liter V8 engine that develops 571 PS (420 kW / 563 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the SLS to rocket from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph).

The Rettmobil is the international forum for innovation, safety, quality, competence and training for about 20,000 trade visitors from home and abroad.
