SLS [Official] Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (C197 / R197) is a front mid-engine, 2-seater, limited production sports car developed by the Mercedes-AMG division of Mercedes-Benz, with the assistance of David Coulthard. The car is the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. SLS stands for "Super Leicht Sport" (Super Light Sport).
I can see this being true. If Mercedes wanted to keep the SLS as some type of special model, a one-off sorta speak. That and the fact the SLS sales have bottomed out, at least in the U.S. Also a Black Series usually means the end is a year or two away for the regular production model. Makes sense.

Good. Let the car retire while it still has some performance cred instead of aiming to squeeze every bit of coin out of it until it's slower than cars costing just a fraction of its price.

I´m hoping the successor will have the ability to generate emotions like the SLS. The SLS is a car which makes a man speechless. A Lamborghini for example doesn´t get this with me.

I never subscribed to the belief that SLS was going to coexist with the C190. Just like the SLS did not get to complement the SLR. Price points have had nothing to do so far with the status of these sport cars. I also do not believe the SLS was cut short. SLR lasted about 5 years as well, from MY2005. From what we can surmise, the C190 is not going to be any less capable than the SLS, so I do not see how having the SLS being sold alongside it makes sense.

The King is dead, long live the King.

I want to be on the right side of history this time so I will agree here lol. Seriously though what you're saying makes sense here. I think they're going to get even more performance out of this platform, but with less cost. In other words they're going to do more with less, sorta speak. This short production run will ensure the SLS will remain somewhat rare and maybe a collectable (100 years from now) one day.

SLS AMG's Production End Almost Confirmed by Ola Kallenius

A few weeks ago we we're telling you about a rather trustable rumor surrounding the end of production for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Today, that rumor became even more trustable, after the Aussies from Motoring published parts of an interview they conduced with soon-to-be ex-boss of AMG, Ola Kallenius.

In the original report, we were saying that the “regular” version of the modern “Flügeltürer” (Gullwing in German) will stop being manufactured as early as January 2014, with the GT and Black Series versions to be made until June 2014.

When asked how much longer will the SLS AMG be manufactured, Kallenius casually avoided a direct answer, but somehow let it slip that our original report may be true:

“We haven’t said yet - we will say soon. But if you want to buy one strike now!” he told Motoring, and that pretty much sounds like a confirmation if you ask us.

Not only that, but he also said that the replacement for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG won't come right after it, which pretty much says that the next three-pointed star supercar will not be the C190 “GT”, but an entirely new model that is yet to have started development.

I can see why now. The SLS' sales are off 50% in the U.S. this year. No need to milk it for every little sale. One more tweak and then end it. No need to whore out this car to the end, keep it special and relatively rare. I bet the 2014 model year is the last in the U.S. since the Black Series is now out, or next to last with the the 2015 seeing some send-off changes.

I saw an SLS at the dealership here in what looked like diamond white matte paint. It was the most beautiful colour and car I had ever seen. It sold 5 minutes before to a Japanese guy who was still walking around the car beaming with glee.

I got to drive one on an AMG drive day through the black forest, the car is awesome, and the way the interior is put together makes the S-Class feel cheap. I was actually comparing the SLS with an S-350 last weekend, and you can't.

SLS AMG Facelift To Switch to Twin-Turbocharged V8 [Photo Gallery]

We should first offer you an errata, as a few weeks ago we were reporting that the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will stop being produced from June 2014 in order to make room for the smaller C190 project, which is to be called the Mercedes-Benz GT.

As the following photos show, the SLS AMG is far from reaching retirement, with a mid-cycle facelift expected to arrive just as the series was expected by the peeps at MB Passion to end production completely.

Looking at the images and corroborating it with earlier intel, another bombshell is about to hit your screens – the legendary M159 engine is now living its final months.

As you can see from the closeups of the much increased side air intakes, they seem to be harboring a pair of intercoolers similar to other twin-turbocharged AMG models. Since the normally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 doesn't need an intercooler, we can only speculate that the SLS AMG facelift will sport a twin-turbocharged engine instead of the M159.

To further thicken the plot, the new AMG boss Tobias Moers said that the upcoming S-Class AMG model range (Sedan, Coupe and Cabriolet) will be the last new Mercedes-Benz to feature the 5.5-liter M157 engine in their 63 AMG versions.

This can only mean that the new four-liter twin-turbocharged V8 – internally named M177 – is about to make its way under the SLS AMG's gargantuan hood as well, besides being used by the upcoming W205 C 63 AMG and the C190 GT.

Based on two conjoined M133s from the A/CLA/GLA 45 AMG, the new M177 is good for at least 700 hp with no major modifications while keeping its fuel consumption to the level of a V6 with 1/3 of the power.

In the “regular” SLS AMG we're expecting around 600 hp, with the GT version making 20-30 hp more and the Black Series around 700 hp. We can't wait to see, and most of all hear, the new V8 in action, because the M159 is a rather tough act to follow in the sound department.

Mass confusion. Guess we will just have to wait and see. This could be just a mule for the new car to test the turbo V8 IMO. I can't see the turbo V8 going into the SLS, IF that car is on its way out of production.

Mercedes SLS AMG facelift caught

In June 2014 the Mercedes SLS AMG was definately coming to an end. That's what some blogs, magazines and newspapers recently reported. Mercedes-Fans.de was not so sure - and so we did not spread the message of the early twilight of the gods. Sure, at some point, the Mercedes SLS AMG becomes a discontinued model. But that does not seem to happen in the near future, as evidenced by recent photos by the Mercedes-Fans.de spy hunter: the facelift of the SLS AMG coupe and the SLS AMG Roadster.

^^No it is not because of that, infact the SLS was a massive success for Merc with the sales exceeding their expectation. It's just for keeping the exclusivity of the car that they are stopping its production.

As expected MB wont accept orders for the SLS AMG Coupe or SLS AMG Roadster, starting immediately. A final SLS AMG model based on the GT will probably be introduced at the LA Auto Show, and starts production in February 2014 and ends in the summer of 2014, likely to make room for the AMG GT (C190). :)
