S-Class W222 [Official] Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222)

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).
Thats awesome, thanks for the pics laArtist...
The Anti-wedge profile somehow makes it stand up and look powerful. The AMG version is gonna rock!
(This is going to work wonders for the next E-Class)

I love it. Even the basic interior looks really good, the design and patterns of the seats are really nice and arouse a sense of something exclusive. You only have to pay a little bit for better wheels (the 500 has already good enough wheels at least for me), but you can choose from a lot of rims so no problem there. I think Mercedes stroke a jackpot with this S class this time around. Hardly see anything worth a remake for the facelift.

Phenomenal control. Only thing I worry is that it will cause drivers to be more aggressive than prudent. Suspension and wheel will be shocked more than before without drivers doing the obligatory and self-serving slowdown

The new S class is allegedly based on the old W221 platform. Do not know what to say, does not have to be a problem if they completely reworked it, but for auto fans it is probably no good news. It is interesting that knowing the costs of the development they kept the old platform. The new MRA probably was not available yet so ....

Wha the MBC is really like magic, i must experience it ASAP..That is some ground breaking tech.

PS
Do you have a source which says its built on the W221 platform?

that's not true. Care to give a definitive source for the W222 NOT being on the new Mercedes Rear-wheel drive Architecture'd platform?

merc4 is right. It´s the old platform.
Other reasons for that are by doing so they can use the old R134a for air conditioning and do not need to apply for a complete new car approval at the respective german authority.

my german is so so but according to spiegel.de Weltpremiere Mercedes S-Klasse: Zetsches neues Stern-Zeichen - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Mobilität they received from german authorities permission to use an old airconditioning refrigerant that is for new cars forbidden. Also it is interesting that the W221 and W222 have the same wheelbase.
I should have written ... allegedly based on the old platform.

The AC refrigerant issue is a highly contested case right now. Mercedes and a few other manufacturers claim the new kind if highly flammable. This has been going on for over a year. Regardless, that wouldn't be something indicative of the same platform. Mercedes calls EU-mandated A/C refrigerant dangerous

As far as the wheelbase goes, you got me there. I have a VERY hard time believing Mercedes could put an entirely new electrical architecture in a carryover platform though- one BIG reason the Maybach lagged behind the W221 in terms of available features is because it was based on the W140. Mercedes couldn't implement the all of the new W221 systems on the W140 chassis so it soldiered on with previous-gen gear.

This all not to mention the fact that EVERYONE has been reporting this was the first car to bring in the new MRA platform.

EDIT: That being said, I could believe it was on the old platform. Is anyone aware if it uses the same suspension mounting points/setup as the old W221?

Awesome, just awesome! Must find a way to afford one before it launches in the UK in september!

Artist, great work as usual. I knew I could rely on you :)

This is something I feared. I even asked someone on this forum to explain me if it was going to be based on the new MRA platform or not. Mr Merc had post (I believe from 2010) in which it was mentioned that the first MB to be based on the MRA platform will be W205 C Class. (He posted an article from a magazine). New platform is not mentioned nowhere in press release, nor magazines.

The upside is this:
1. The S Class will keep its bespoke-ness - it has its own platform, unlike other Benzes, AND unlike its competitors who use modular platforms. This is a big factor in this segment.
2. This probably made developing of the car significantly cheaper. Bear in mind, however, this platform, although it isn't all new, it is enhanced. It is (a bit) lighter, and different materials are used.

The downside:
3. It is, after all, 8 years in production, and one would have to question if the platform can cope with new technologies which will appear and be fitted to the car.
4. Competitors are not going to sit with their hands crossed, especially BMW (who invested huge money in CFRP production facility in USA. My belief is that the next big thing in auto industry will be use of advanced materials, and I can see MB lagging here).
