PS
WOW!

Somewhere, there are 7-series teams getting kidnapped out of their beds and locked into the rooms until project is finished. You all may remember BMW admitting of delaying the 2001 7-Series once they saw the 220.

I was predisposed to like this car, despite very mild reservations about the front. To me the front was, until earlier today, too mild. Almost reminiscent of a 220. I had grown accustomed to the pointed grille of the FL 221; especially the double-louvred one in the v12 models is insane.

Having seen the videos really paints the full picture of this car. Verdict? Despite my full-speed loving of this vehicle, it still managed to grow even more in my eyes after seeing the videos. The car is amazing, exterior and even more, interior-wise.

The interior pretty much lifts the level of discussion a couple of levels. Materials are superb, but even more, there is a new paradigm to the design of the dash. The dual screens, and the way the interior sculpts more room out of the car is a new thinking. BMW, AUDI and other brands currently at their design boards are taking notice. The old dash paradigm simply won't do after this.

The exterior, well, it is very understated. I loved the back from the outset; a 216-like softness yet sportivity that I had loved in the old coupe and absolutely adore in the new sedan. The sides, well, that line is what the line was supposed to be from the start. Forget the CLS, the CLA, etc. This had been the intent all along, that was an S-class line, period. The front? It came off soft to me at first. But videos truly brought it to the fore that it was simply a gigantic grille, very imposing, therefore it needed to retain some softness in order not to be too abrupt, like a Rolls Royce. The whole exterior does a great job of keeping this car serenely confident, deliberate yet composed... I could go on and on.

I like how the Sport model no longer looks like a body-kit stuck onto the car; it is organic and very nearly imperceptible from some angles. It does need to be noticed to be felt. I love it. (Here is to hoping the real AMGs do have some zazz in their sleeves).

Finally, the marketing. MB really put on a SHOW!!! This was an event! The fleet welcoming the new king was tear-worthy. The trailer was also phenomenal; someone already pointed out that the music was rightfully epic. It makes a fan kneel with respect, and a hater take the hat off in a brief and respectful armistice.

Fellow fans and spy thread veterans, congratulations! Our wait was not for nothing. (How I wish the SL had been the same)

revolutionary, sleek and elegant yet powerful and imposing! well done.;)

somehow it reminds me of the w220.

i am really curious how BMW will respond to this, it must be overwhelming for their design team.

i can now finally say goodbye with confidence to the much loved w221.

love it

my only quibble is the line/bulge underneath the headlights. Do not like the lower bumper. Otherwise bloody amazing!

Imagine the upcoming XWB S600 and S65 AMG,the S-Class coupe and convertible,Mercedes in a boom.

I am wondering, with all these videos having been show sometime in past two months... where the heck were the spy photographers? One was caught only :).

Imagine the upcoming XWB S600 and S65 AMG,the S-Class coupe and convertible,Mercedes in a boom.

I am almost "disturbed" to imagine the S 600 right now. The S 65, I can almost imagine easier, because it is an AMG with some more quilting. But the S-600 - brand new patterns of leather, stitching, trim pieces, much much more. I just hope that there is a Sport package available in the US this time. And, hope it has decent power and not be left too much in the dust by the V8 AMG (With 455hp/516lbs standard V8, it has to be something special to even bother).

Hello everyone and congratulations on this master piece. I am not particularly new to this forum; I have been following it daily for the past 6 months. Right now its 5.25am where I am and I haven't slept because of this car. I have refreshed this thread over a hundred times today!

About the car. I am very overwhelmed. The outgoing W221 is one car I thought MB could not out-do but I have been proved very wrong. I got to admit at first, I was a bit sceptical about the front lights as it seemed very odd. But it grew on me almost as fast as light travels. Yes, photos had been leaked over the last couple of weeks but the presentation today was a very emotional affair (Airbus and Mercedes-Benz is like chocolate cake and ice-cream to me :D). I am so glad I am not the only one that shed some tears (now I don't feel to weird). This car is the perfect example of a traditional yet highly futuristic and truly luxurious luxury car. The elegance of the lines and those rear lights are on par with sex! It is really amazing. This is why MB will continue to be the best. This is a perfect replacement for the W221 as it carries the same prestige and aurora yet understated, old-money elegance as it predecessor. I think Hartmut Sinkwitz described it best: an expression of visual silence!

The interior is on another level. I dare say on par with an RR ghost and Bentley Continental GT. I wasn't too sure about the 2 spoke steering wheel as well but then I thought about it; what else could fit this cabin better. It is simply perfect in my eyes now. As for what is considered its competition, IMO, they don't come close ATM. As far as I am concerned, this car is in a league of its own. Comparing it to the XJ, 7er and A8 may be a little unfair for now (even though AutoCAR will somehow make the try their very best to make the XJ better).

What I find annoying now though are the ignorant, envious comments on many of the major motoring websites. I mean, some people are shouting about how ugly this is and how it is very identical to an E-class?! Even on the MB facebook page, there are so many silly comments like that. I mean, you can criticise all you want but don't let hate and envy paint it dry :D despite that, over 25k people have liked it. I guess a true masterpiece like this doesn't need to be defended by anyone. It speaks for itself. Hopefully now, the price of used W221's would come down even more so I could own one soon:D

Question and Answer session...............with a Mercedes' hardcore fan i.e. myself

Q. How are you doing
A. I am feeling quite fine especially after May 15.

Q. How do you rate this car design wise
A. Exterior wise the best among its competition and beyond. Interior appears to have the best quality compared to rivals in the pictures.

Q. What are the best and worst aspects of its exterior design
A. The rear and side profiles are outstanding. Front is a bit weak in the pictures as the headlights appear to be too large but that may be in the pictures only as pictures tend to over emphasize the obvious. However, the front lights should have been sharper with a straight line rather than rounding off near the grill. Ah its just a minor glitch in otherwise outstanding looking machine.

Q. Is it the best looking modern S class.
A. No that title still belongs to the venerable, beautiful, and adjectives' oriented Bruno Sacco's W126 S class. Cannot find a weakness in its exterior design.

Q. And the interior
A. The best quality interior in the S class I think. But the W221 had better cowl design than the square box we have now. The rest of the interior is beautiful.

Q. Thankyou for the time
A. My pleasure.

Just wanted to share my thoughts. :)

What Mercedes-Benz has accomplished here is nothing short of immensely remarkable. The new S-Class is a visually as well as technically extremely compelling automobile. Let us hope that affluent Chinese consumers share my views as China is a market in which Mercedes-Benz has so far stumbled in comparison to its' German competitors.

And I find myself pondering: If Mercedes-Benz can produce a 4 door sedan as eye arresting as the new W222 S-Class, what can we expect with regard to the upcoming coupe/cabriolet S-Class derivatives ? My guess: nothing short of breathtaking, heart-stopping beauty.

I dont's think the interior of W222 is on par with RR ghost and Bentley Flying Spur,it exceeds both of them.Only Mulsanne's interior can compete with W222 on quality and refienment, but lacking some scientific sophiscation.

It's nice for me how the headlamps follows the curve of the grille. Without this curve the headlamp would be too simple.

Hi,

has someone gotten hold of the press information package?

I'm keen on information about the body itself i.e. the used steel and the structure.

As the S-class (as any other car in the real top luxury segment) won't publicise crash test results, I'm really interested if MB has done anything about the small overlap IIHS thing, intrusions, etc.

Please do get me right, it's just being interested in structural things as I don't believe in all the electronic stuff to safe lives :-)

(Keep in mind that the W222 - formally - is just a tuned up W221 as the type certifiate is based on this 2005 car's body work. I should be quite interesting what structural changes they've done to it...)
