Q. What are the best and worst aspects of its exterior design
A. Best aspect is the profile, headlights, grill and rear bootlid.
Worst are the boring exhausts on the 500 and 400

For that reason I prefer the solution on the non AMG-packed S 350 BlueTec. At rear you don't see any exhausts and that in fact looks really good.

I don't see how this S would sit on an old platform when they engineered an entirely new platform, and delayed the release by 2 years to get it right, for the SL.

It is a new platform, "formally" derived from the 221 series - to work around the colling fluid issues. Remember: MB is considering the new fluid a safety issue. They're going the CO2 way for the climate compressor, but that will take some time. In the meantime, the 222 would not have been released by the almighty EU because of the "wrong" climate fluids. So the 222 is "formally" a 221 with a tune up. Formally. The body structure enhancements are immense!

For W201: The uncentered steering wheel is something which has been annoying me since the W123. It's off-center because of some safety things - there's a patented structure on the wheel pin to the steering gear box which hinders the wheel in intruding or "climbing to the roof" in a severe accident. Mind you: when you look at crashed MBs, you won't find a steering wheel going through the roof, taking a head with it. You'll do so in every other brand I now. That's not that you won't die in an MB, but normally it's just deceleration going over your organ's limits, not some structure tearing you apart I think it's a small price having an uncentered steering wheel.

Btw: The not-longitudinal-engine-MBs do have centered wheels - there's another solution for this with them.
