E-Class W212 [Official] Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (W212) revealed

The W212 and S212 Mercedes-Benz E-Class series is the fourth generation of the E-Class range of executive cars which was produced by Mercedes-Benz between 2009 and 2016 as the successor to the W211 E-Class. The body styles of the range are either four-door sedan/saloon (W212) or a five-door estate/wagon (S212).
I guess I'm in the minority, but after having digested the FL E-class since it's release, I've come to realize I much prefer the pre-FL vs. the FV version, especially in AMG guise. The new AMG air dam looks ridiculous...it reminds me of a Hoover Hand-vac. The pre-FL AMG had a confidence about it that didn't bludgeon you over the head like the new one does. Also not a fan of the Sports grill. But I do like the FL rear, especially in that blue E500 that The Artist posted couple posts above this post.

I would be interesting to see an upgrade in the power for the W222 S-Class AMD to reach the 600 PS with the 65 AMG version having closer to 700 PS.

But my bet is same power for the S63 and 650 PS for the S65.

No way a S/CL/SL63 will have the same power as the E/CLS 63..
So if they are already at 585 then expect 600ish from the S..
And to motivate the near double price of the 65 it should be around 700 as you said.

To get some things straight. If you want 585hp then E63 is only available with AWD and if you want 550 hp then you must choose RWD. AWD isnt even an option.
Is this correct or did I miss something?
No, the AWD is standard in the S-model, but optional in the "regular" model. So, if you want RWD, you will have to go with the less-powerful version, one way to look at it.

S/CL/SL tend to have a few more ponies. In the previous iteration of the V8TT, we had E/CLS having 518 in standard trim, and S/CL/SL having 536, so an 18hp difference. (Most importantly, there was a 100nm difference in torque). This difference was tacked on to the Performance packages somewhat (549 for E/CLS vs. 563 for S/CL/SL). So, the power rating of the S/CL/SL will likely end up being slightly under 600, perhaps 594-598 to protect the prestige of the V12 models. I have no idea where the 65 model will land on this, but I would not put it past AMG to surpass 700 hp, what with the 700 horsepower engines being put by several outfits (Ferrari, Lamborghini etc) Remember that when the first 65 arrived on scene, it obliterated these marques that had till then reigned supreme in power ratings (612hp vs ~570 for the Murcielago of that time)

My question here is: how will they handle the SL line? With these stellar acceleration numbers posted by the lower E/CLS line, will they resort to put 4-matic on the SL? I would assume packaging is a nightmare, not to mention the difficulty of "marrying" the SL concept with AWD.

I dont think S/CL/SL 65 will break 700hp mark. The most I expect is 630-650. Also, i don't think they will receive 4MATIC, they will probably be 'classic' front-engine-huge-amount-of-power-rear-wheel-drive type of prestigious car. Even the last generation SL 65 was topper in terms of prestige, and the 63 was topper in terms of performance. Guess the same will apply to the new S Class.

I know the beauty of the game is in the anticipation, but this 'foreplay' with S Class is becoming tiresome...:sleep:

I thought only the SL65 had 630, and the update wasn't made to the S and CL? My bad.

Still, let's not forget that that V12 AMG engine had 612hp since... 2002 (?) utill 2012. So it wasn't updated for entire decade. I doubt the update will be significant, if it happens at all.

Yes, and because of the bolded, I expect a big upgrade this time.

The (rather small) update was made less than a year ago. That's why i don't expect update in terms of power at all.

One more thing just crossed my mind: is the new W222 going to be lighter? I have never heard or read anywhere, not even on this forum, about the weight saving in the coming S Class. So, less weight will make it more faster without adding more hp to the engine.

I kinda want Mercedes to either do a new V12 or kill the current one off. It seems irrelevant next to the AMG V8s now.

Absolutely. A TT V12 by AMG should reach the offerings of the top end Ferrari and Lambo, with is 700-750 PS. If they are not going to reach that level, the best thing the can do is axe the V12 and stick with the V12, which could perfectly deliver the 630 PS of the current S65 AMG.

That would be exactly the wrong combination: letting the higher-powered car - 65 - with two driven wheels when the 63 gets an excellent AWD system.

@Merc1
Au contraire, mon ami! V12 is about prestige, not about perfomance. Don't forget that 600 models are more expensive than 63 AMG models :). Of course, in the straight line the 65 will always be faster than 63, but everywhere else, just as you noticed, V8s are very, very powerful, and more performance oriented.

There was also a rumor that V12s will now be assembled by the AMG.

@Pagani
I think I explained why i think 4MATIC won't be on 65 - it is not about performance.

I'm sorry for this amount of offtopic, for a moment I even thought I'm on the S Class thread.

End offtopic

I was thinking of around 740 hp for the next S65 AMG. That, and 4Matic (1200 Nm anyone?)

Unfortunately, based on what we have seen from the G65 AMG - where torque was capped at 660lb/ft from a spec-738, we may not see too much additional torque if there is AWD. Transmission would be a limitation, and now AWD as well (both of these have been quoted as not too friendly to high torque by MB officials in the past)

Regarding the S65, the motortrend article about AMG going AWD for the E63 said that the S65 will remain RWD but the S63 will be AWD. Regarding the SL I did not read anywhere about it going AWD. But on the other hand I read in one article I posted here before that they knew about the problems with so much torque going only to the rear and decided to offer AWD across more models along the RWD ones. I think that if they will be able to do it with little costs and there will be no problems with the packaging they will offer SL AWD. And I think there there is enough room for the AWD in the SL.
I also suspect that the time of the acceleration of 3,6 secs is intentionally conservative. It just can not be quicker than the SLS black, at least on paper.
