E-Class (W213) [Official] Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213

The W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold from 2016 as a 2017 model. It succeeded the W212/S212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63S versions of the W213 have been available as well from 2016 (as a 2017 model), and these are the only versions with V8 engines.
With the fifth generation of the E-Class, Mercedes-Benz ticks all the boxes. The new business sedan not only sets higher standards for all its competitors, catering to anyone who wants to get an almost autonomously running computer, but also a saloon with a powerful design, matching performance and exceptionally luxurious interior.

Opposite to its predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is set apart by its more generous external dimensions: the wheelbase has grown by 65 mm to 2,939 mm and the length was expanded by 43 mm to 4,923 mm. Not the same can be said about the weight, thanks to lightweight construction. Short overhangs, long wheelbase, long hood, large wheels, a reinterpreted side character line characterize the design. With a drag coefficient of 0.23, the body proves not only aesthetic qualities, reducing the consumption and the noise level in the interior.

At launch, the E-Class will be available in two engine guises: the E 200 with a four-cylinder turbo petrol engine and the E 220 d powered by an all-new four-cylinder diesel engine with piezo-guided direct injection (code named OM654). After the market launch more models will complement the range. These include the plug-in hybrid E 350 e with an electric driving range of 30 km. Its four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine works in conjunction with an electric motor for a system output of 205 kW/279 hp and a torque of 600 Nm.

The pinnacle of the new E-Class range will be the all-new 2-liter diesel engine (code named OM654) which comes in two flavors: 110 kW / 150 hp for the E 200 d (not available right from the outset) and 143 kW / 195 hp for the E 220 d launch model with a combined NEDC fuel consumption of 3.9 liters per 100 kilometers. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 102 grams per kilometer. During the course of 2016, Mercedes will extend the line-up with new six-cylinder petrol engine (codenamed M256) and diesel engine (codenamed OM656). New from the ground-up, these units have already entered pilot production at the factory in Unterturkheim.

The new four-cylinder diesel engine (OM654) and the new six-cylinders petrol (M256) and diesel (OM656) will share elements of their architecture with the existing four-cylinder petrol engine (M274) including 500 cmc cylinder displacement and 90 mm distance between the cylinders axles.

On the petrol front, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will be offered alongside a wide range of four-cylinder turbo engines with power outputs ranging between 135 and 180 kW (183-245 hp) and the aforementioned six-cylinder petrol engine said to be developing 245 kW / 333 hp. All engines are equipped with start-stop function. The petrol engines fully comply with the emission regulations according to EU 6, the new four-cylinder diesel engine is already designed for future limits. All models available at launch are fitted as standard with the new nine-speed automatic 9G-Tronic transmission.

The new E 63 AMG will debut in summer of 2016 powered by the new twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8, offered in two versions, with around 600 hp for the top version S.

In conjunction with the standard steel suspension, clients will be able to specify no less than three Direct Control Suspension options with selective damping system: a comfort suspension, a comfortable Avantgarde suspension with sportier character, lowered by 15 millimeters, plus an overtly sporty suspension with adaptive damping and a further 15 millimeters reduction in ride height. Alternatively, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class can be equipped with an air suspension complemented by an electronically controlled adjustable damping system. The E-Class is the only vehicle in its segment with a multi-chamber air suspension, called Air Body Control. The character of the E-class can be switched accordingly in five different modes via the standard Dynamic Select: ,, Comfort “, ,, Eco,” ,, Sport “and ,, Sport +” and the additional setting ,, Individual”.

Inside, the seats acts as a focal point. With their ergonomic shape the seats combine long-distance comfort with a sporty look and differ in terms of looks depending on the chosen equipment Line. The rear seat bench can be supplied on request with a three-part folding backrest (40:20:40). The center armrest includes a storage compartment and two cup holders. If desired, the interior is dominated by two large displays, each with 12.3-inch in diagonal. Visually the two screens merge seamlessly under a common cover glass and a single scoop in a cockpit, which seems to float freely.

For the first time, Touch Controls mounted on the steering wheel appear on a large scale production vehicle. As the surface of a smartphone they respond to horizontal and vertical swiping movements. Thus they allow the control of the Infotainment system via finger-swiping movements. In addition, the driver can use the classic touchpad and the controller on the center console, which recognizes handwriting inputs.

The standard E-Class versions will get traditional analogue dials and an 8.4 inch central infotainment screen.

The sedan will not be alone for long, of course, as the new E-Class line-up will reunite the Limousine (March 2016), T-Model (mid-2016), Coupe (March 2017) and Convertible (September 2017) variants.

And this is not all. In addition, Mercedes is working on a fifth derivative of the E-Class, the successor to the CLS (March 2018) and – instead of the Shooting Brake; the revolutionary AMG GT4 based on Mercedes junior supercar (september 2018).

The high standards that embody the E-Class become even more clear when looking at the impressive list of driver assistance systems. One area the new Mercedes E-Class will make a significant leap forward is the safety and comfort with various systems for semi-autonomous driving taking center stage.

Completely new on board are the Intelligent Drive Next Level and the Evasive Steering systems, semi-autonomous functions that can – at any time; be overridden by the driver. Also new to the E-Class is the Active Brake Assist with junction function. In addition, the E-Class is also offering industry first Car-to-X communication capabilities based on the wireless technology, fully communicating with other cars similarly equipped and warn the driver, brake or act accordingly to the imminent dangers. As an option, the new E-Class can also be remotedly controlled via a smartphone app for parking manouevres. The smartphone can be used to open or close the doors. The driver will be able to secure the car when leaving for a brief moment such as in a garage door opening scenario.

Intelligent Drive next Level is the next step to the autonomous driving. The system is able to keep the car at a correct distance behind slower vehicles ahead automatically and can also follow them in their lane at a speeds from 0 of up to 200 km/h. At speeds up to 130 km/h, the system is not dependent on clearly visible lane markings as it can also intervene if the lines on the road are unclear or there are no lines on the road at all.

If the Comand Online is ordered, the optional Speed Limit Pilot subfunction can autonomously adjust the vehcicle’s speed according to informations received from the camera detected speed limits.

Active Lane Change Assist (a sub-function of DRIVE PILOT and a component of the Driving Assistance Package) steers the new E-Class into the adjacent lane when the driver activates the turn indicator for more than two seconds, if sensors do not detect any vehicles in the relevant safety zone. It is also inconsequential whether the vehicle wants to return to the right-hand lane or steer to the left for overtaking. It works at speeds between 80 and 180 km/h (50-112 mph), when the Steering Pilot is activated.

Active Brake Assist can warn the driver of imminent crash situations, provide just the right level of assistance in the event of sudden braking and also apply the brake automatically in an emergency. In adition to detecting the slower-moving and the stationary vehicles, it also detects and reacts to crossing traffic at junctions, the tail ends of traffic jams and pedestrians. The Active Brake Assist is active in a speed range from 7 up to 250 km / hr for moving objects and from 7 to 70 km / h for stationary objects. Under optimal conditions, the system is fully able to prevent a collision on a stationary vehicle or a collision with pedestrians up to a speed of about 65 km / h. Cross-traffic collisions should also be avoided thanks to the intersection function at speeds as high as 50 km / h. In traffic jam scenarios, the Active Brake Assist is able to automatically stop the car from a speed of maximum 90 km / h.

Evasive Steering Assist is the ideal complement to the pedestrian detection function of Active Brake Assist. When the driver deliberately or instinctively performs an evasive manoeuvre in a dangerous situation, this function can assist by adding precisely calculated steering torque to support the movement of the steering wheel.

Remote Parking Pilot can park the car or take out the car from the parking space with the driver staying outside the car and using a smartphone application. It helps in the situations in which parking space is very tight.

Car-to-X Communication allows the mobile phone-supported exchange of information with other vehicles further ahead on the road, for example, can effectively allow the driver to see around corners or through obstacles. This means that the driver receives an earlier warning than previously in the event of imminent danger, such as vehicle in an accident.

Digital car key allows the driver’s smartphone to be used as a vehicle key.

Pre-Safe Impulse side system offers additional protection in case of side collision is detected. The air chambers in the backrest side bolsters inflate rapidly to prevently move the occupant sideways, away from the danger area. This increases the distance between passenger and door.

Pre-Safe sound protects the passengers ears from the expected noise in the event of a possible collision.

Multibeam LED headlamps each with 84 high performance LEDs automatically illuminate the road with precision controlled distribution of very bright light without blinding other road users.

Last but not the least on board are the already known systems like Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Pre-Safe Plus, all of which were recalibrated in therms of their functionality and sensor accuracy. Airbags are integrated into the outer rear belts, a feature already on offer for the S-Class.

i love and hate leaks, while its nice to see it finally, i want more... videos, info and all. im tired of searching through the web with a magnifying glass, this is all we got for now.. hopefully more in the coming days :)

Well done, you're slowly getting into shape again.

Opposite to its predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is set apart by its more generous external dimensions: the wheelbase has grown by 65 mm to 2,939 mm and the length was expanded by 43 mm to 4,923 mm.

This here means: improved (shorter) overhangs. Explains the fantastic proportions too.

Safe exterior design, can't find anything I don't like about it. Will look great in AMG form.
They have done a fantastic job with the interior I must say.

I like it but I'm I'm not as in love with it as I initially thought. I'm not too sold on the front end like others have said the headlights look too small and malproportioned (if such a word exists), speaking of they should've designed the headlights better to retain the virtual quad light design like they did in the FL W212. The interior is stunning and probably the best design ever in an E class and the rear looks suitable but not jaw dropping, this is probably because I've seen the same design twice already ;). It would've been nice to see the designers somehow integrate the E class coupe's taillights into the E class so it could retain some elements of the W212 but still incorporate Mercedes new design language. For now I'm not too impressed with the overall design of the car I feel like more could've been done but I will save further judgement until I see live photos next week

The car, to me, came out better than I thought, particularly the AMG sport package! Looks incredible!

I love the Elegance package! It looks worlds more harmonious than the Elegance W212F.

I, however, am not too into the standard Avantgarde package.

Im going to go with "ask the right question at the right time" the reason they killed off the classic grille on the W212 was the low take up....according to MB.

That's true for the W204 C but not true for the W212 E. Pre-FL the W212 only had the classic/elegance grill. When the FL launched MB Australia ditched that grill entirely and opted for the sports grill only. The classic grill was not available in oz after the face lift and the sports grill has been forced onto buyers. There was never a time during the W212's lifecycle that both grills were available in the Australian market. And I bet my bottom dollar that there are a lot of buyers in this segment that still want the classic grill, even with the sports kit.

The best parts are the proportion, the side profile, rear and the interior.

The front could be more imposing, it looks soft as many have stated, probably due to the small headlights.

Overall, a worthy E-class successor, another winner from Stuttgart(y)

Meh, nothing new. Just as expected. I'd get it for interior only. Luxury only for me still.
And yes, the headlights design is horrible. Now I'm afraid they'll ruin the S-Class' facelift with them.

I respectfully disagree. I see the headlights as one of the most intriguing parts of the 213. They give a very sophisticated, almost organic look to the design.

I'm becoming more and more excited for the W222F, because if the W213 came out this good, I can only imagine how (more) beautiful the W222 can get!

I am a MB fan and I am disappointed and that is what I was expecting with this model. The E is all nice but it doesn't stir the emotions of enthusiasm. W124 still does. W123 still does.

The W222 S is the best of the Mercedes current design as it was the one that introduced and set the current design language for both the interior and the exterior, and this design needs the sheetmetal (Maybach) to shine. The C has the best and original interior at least. The E neither has the exterior of its own nor the interior. Its just mixing the elements of S and C.

The above comparison of all E classes indicates that W124 is equivalent to Michael Jackson's Thriller album....the height of creativity and charisma and then the following offers just can't match that escalated level of that performance. Yes the new E is all nice but that is about it.

I have to agree. The overall design is sensuous, and then you have these headlights that are almost robotic. Those light strakes almost remind me of the robotic fingers from Terminator.

While I do find the headlights in of itself to be interesting, it creates a weird sense of dissonance. Whereas the stardust effect in the rear lights gives it a sense of mystery, further amplifying the sensuous design.

I like the car quite a bit despite being underwhelmed. Part of that has to do with how drawn out the debut was, how long I've been following development of W213 and how similar it is with its smaller and larger brethren. Almost too much in common. The E-class, for the last 2-3 gens, tended to be the more extrovert of the 3 sedans, now not so much. All that said, money being no object, I'd still would opt for the E with the classic grille. I cannot emphasize enough that classic grille is a must, the sports grille is absolute garbage on a car like this. *Sigh* I wish I had the means to get dark blue example with the AMG wheels for my dad.

BTW, this is absolutely off-topic, but if I don't say it now, I will forget as I've done countless times in the past.....
@DocM, don't ever, ever, ever change your avatar.

Now back to the W213....

With all due respect to the MB fans here, I personally find the headlight's detailing to be awful, horrible. By far the worse in the whole line up, and I don't really like any of the rest to be honest. Too laboured, over the top for the sake of it. Reminds me of Audi and their Christmas trees.

And while I perfectly understand why many find the interior sensational and awe worthy, I simply can't stand the dual screens, the mega wide shade needed over them, and the high visual mass they produce in the dash shape/form. Same occurs with the Volvo S90.

In that sense I much prefer the Audi and BMW approach in which the navigation screen isn't covered by a shade, thus reducing the aforementioned visual height. In fact, my favorite interior of all is the Audi TT, for it's simple, airy and minimalist.

All of this of course, from my very subjective point of view.

Hate to say it, so far I just like the rear of the car. The front especially the headlight looks awful incoorperate into the design. Hope that some high res photo with different angle will change my perception.

Some render prior the actual photo actually looks better. I hope the E-CLASS will grow on me like how the facelift SL did soon.

May be alone here, but my favorite E Class is the pre facelift W212.

This looks great, as expected, but there's really no surprise, as expected.

Nothing new though, Mercedes sedans have always looked the same between them, few exceptions.
