I didn't get a picture of it, I mean what is there to see, but Mercedes did debut the E400 at Detroit also. Looks like it will come in sport trim only. I can't wait to see how they position this model. Totally confused as to how it could replace the E550, and not the E350. I still think there will be a E300, E400 and E550, but that's just me.

E350 9GTronic reviewed

Conclusion: An improvement in peace and stutter-free acceleration
in the conclusion reached by us 9G TRONIC gearbox but very convenient, also ensures peace and jumpy acceleration. The development of Mercedes-Benz 9G TRONIC transmission has paid off. Through in-house development and production of the transmission of the greater range use can, however, continue to wait, even the new C-- nor the S-Class gets the gear (for now) not yet.

Unfortunately we did not have the time to test the gearbox sufficient just to fuel consumption we were really excited, but we have written to us for later in our "toDo" list.

Is there an English version of this review? This gearbox has to be perfect to compete with the ZF 8HP.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E550 4MATIC Review

8caea1303fc5eef8fbec1caf64f1f37e.jpg

From the mundane to the clinically insane, if there is a car question that exists in this universe, I have heard it. Some are so open ended that my automotive brains begins to implode under the stress of infinite possible answers. Spoiler alert – there is no answer for “What’s the best car?”

Others like “at what price do you get everything you could ever need in a car” are more to the point. Although this answer can vary for each individual, my new benchmark is $73,060. That’s the as-tested price after destination charges for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E550 4MATIC I recently had the pleasure of testing. The E550 has it all; luxury, performance, style, comfort and all-weather capability. Anything more expensive than the E550 becomes a purchasing exercise driven by bragging rights and ego.

A Suspension that Actually Adapts

The pillar to the E550’s all-around capability lies in the chassis. I am usually critical of Mercedes-Benz’s air suspensions as I have found in the past that there is not enough of a difference between the sport and comfort modes. That is not the case here. In the comfort setting the car rides smoothly and is isolated from all outside interference. It is the ideal setting for long highway slogs and drives through the open country.

I just love seeing a Benz used in this way.

Wanted: The best automatic in the world
More speed steps, less consumption - goes to the bill for Mercedes? The new 9G-Tronic has to prove itself in the technology compared with the eight-speed automatic from BMW and the seven-speed DSG from Audi.

Die limits to growth - the Club of Rome, it had realized in the same future study already over 40 years ago. Some politicians do not see it, however, until today. And also in the automotive industry, there is sometimes the simple maxim "more is better".Now achieved this growth illusion the automatic transmission, the splurge with more and more speed steps. Handed the inventor of the automobile, until recently, a five-speed automatic transmission, presents Mercedes for the first time gear-magic with nine speed levels. Please look closely: nine different translations - in a transmission.
In the E-Class 9G-Tronic premiere

Wonderfully relaxed: The 9G-Tronic ensures, together with the strong diesel for much serenity.

First, there is the new marvel of switching technology only in the E 350 BlueTec. What the natural enemy for the new Mercedes-automatic Audi A63.0 TDI and BMW 530d hot. It gets this comparison, which evaluated only the engine-gearbox unit, particularly explosive. For while the Ingolstadt rely on the double-clutch transmission with seven gears, put Munich on the eight-speed Sport automatic (plus 250 euros) from ZF.Thus, we include 7, 8, 9 ... and wonder who who counts out here. The most important question: How does that drives you? For Mercedes, the answer is delightfully relaxed. The massive 620 Nm of torque of the three-liter diesel engine in the E-Class would probably get along even tidy with a three-speed automatic transmission, we would be considerably more hectic traveling. The huge translation spread of the first to the ninth speed level is at least 9.15 Benz - Audicreates about eight, BMW seven. Together with the long final drive ratio of the E 350 BlueTec to the V6 diesel has often just barely struggling just above idle speed, already purring peacefully load them muttering and whispering softly.
All news and tests for the Mercedes E-Class
The BMW gearbox affords an annoying character

We do not know of a better switchbox currently BMW has done with ZF gearbox as partner everything right.

Already astray: At maximum speed 250 km / h in top gear, the crankshaft rotates measly 2700 times a minute. In the BMW case they are already at 3200 tours, the Audi, it is another 500 revolutions more. On long trips, there is definitely no better sedative than the 9G-Tronic Mercedes. However, the coziness of the stars-automatic also brings disadvantages to energetic driving. Gear changes take a little longer, the lightning-quick manual downshifting more than three or four gears provide BMW and Audi clearly faster. In addition, the E-Class, the first four gear change never hide completely, always there is a very brief interruption of the power circuit. Sure, the transitions take place soft and flowing, yet the front passenger can count the shifts and then it always knows which gear is applied. In 5 Series and A6 he can forget that - from the Turn he gets here, definitely nothing to do with. The dual clutch transmission of the Audi jerk-free switching was virtually placed in the cradle.Because two switching waves alternating with two clutches reloading the gears, there is simply no loss of tractive force. BMW must be simple to select ZF automatic congratulate as partners - even if Supporter captains when maneuvering still annoyed that the selector lever when the door opens automatically jumps to "P" - we do not know of a better switch box now.
All news and tests for the BMW 5 SeriesEach speed change is sanded smooth that the pilot will notice it only when looking at the tachometer. What we also congratulate ZF. Quite obviously have come up with the "8HP" from ZF and the three-liter inline six-cylinder BMW found two who are meant for each other. Despite comparable performance of the BMW comes in this comparison not only faster in the corridors as Audi and Mercedes, he also consumes least of all. We must not lose many words about the couple of tenths at the performance here.
Traction benefits to be paid for by increased consumption in the A6

If the strongest drink from the tank: The A6 3.0 TDI quattro consumes an average of 7.3 l/100 km.

That the BMW has a fantastic in 6.3 seconds to 100 km, impressed. But the 6.6 seconds the Audi and 6.7 seconds for the Benz also be no reason for concern. Peanuts - and only at the Stammtisch important.Great fall the differences even when consumption is not sufficient, but the topic is clearly important. A test consumption of 6.5 l/100 km for a nearly five-meter-long 5 Series with 258 hp - before this feat of engineering, we take our hats. And we are surprised that the Mercedes with nine speed levels consumed half a liter more.It is clear that the E-Class with less speed is usually the go - which is never wrong as an appetite suppressant. On the other hand, the Benz weighs almost 100 pounds more, he sails function is missing (coming fall 2014), its V6 has more internal friction overcome than the BMW series of six. With the same disadvantages incidentally also fights the Audi, which also still must extend its all-wheel drive. Result: 7.3 l/100 km.
All news and tests for the Audi A6Nevertheless, no one here is counted. On the contrary. All three machines convince. The largest growth has been experiencing Mercedes. Not only the number of speed steps, but also in the automatic skills. The still has limitations. And the currently set BMW and ZF.

So, BMW still has the best transmission out there.
Most efficient, smoother and faster than the competition.
Nice try by MB. I only hope that the 9G is at least better than the 7G.

And Mercedes is ordering whole electrical drivelines from Tesla, not to mention outsourcing CF while BMW manufacturers it's own. Everyone chooses what to invest in vs outsource.

not strictly true. BMW joint ventures with SGL for its CFRP, but of course SGL is effectively controlled by BMW heiress Susanne Klatten, of the Quandt family.

Also, although Mercedes has strong links to Tesla for its electric powertrains, and has a minority shareholding, it still pursues its own way in batteries and motors, as shown just this week with its acquring of 100% ownership of Li-Tec.
