Well, we just did a "Competitive Showdown" with a 5-series in the flesh. And there were multiple cost cutting areas where the Mercedes was just objectively higher quality. BMW does tend to focus on the 'obvious' areas.

Here is a list of a few things.
-TPM- no pressures
-6 airbags vs 9 with MB
-No attention assist.
-Clear coating of ALL painted surfaces.
-BMW has cheapened the quality of brake pads and rotors due to being included in maintenance plan. (So much for the 'ultimate' driving machine.)
-Just open the hood of a BMW 5 series and look at how the hood latches stick down (4 inches) like dangerous projectiles. And no full opening hood feature like the E.
Very cheap looking interior lighting. no LEd map lights.

Constructive feedback, thank you. I am for the most part just concentrating on the perceived interior quality. IMO we should open a general quality forum, not just the typical Audi VS BMW VS M-B, something more about everyones experience and factual stuff we can see and take photos off. In the end we the public has us believe we buy into Premium German cars, we love it and that is why we are members here on GCF. To discuss the factual experience and keep our beloved German OE's on their toes;)

^ Great. Let's see if the new E350 BlueTEC can reduce the fuel consumption by about 6.5%. :D

MB Passion rumors indicate the CLS and maybe the GL and the ML might be in line for the new box as well.

Daimler showcases nine-speed automatic

Daimler introduced on 18 June at the VDI Transmission Congress in Friedrichshafen its first nine-speed automatic. It will power all future series with longitudinally installed engine, that is, from the C-to the S-Class. Thus, Mercedes offers the automatic transmission with the highest number of gears in this vehicle segment.

The nine-speed automatic has a spread of 9.15 - so one can drive at 100 km/hour in ninth gear with only 1,100 r/min. Input torques of up to 1,000 Nm are possible. The nine-speed transmission is to reduce fuel consumption by 6.5 percent compared to the previous seven-speed gearbox.

Dipl.-Ing. Gerhard Henning, Director of Transmission & Drivetrain Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, did not yet reveal in Friedrichshafen when series production will start. But the first vehicles with this transmission are already homologated. It will replace the seven-speed version previously used in existing vehicles. Numerous variants are planned: So the redesign shall also include all-wheel drive and hybrid versions as well as a sporty design with a clutch instead of the torque converter.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class facelift

E200 Natural Gas Drive model introduced

Mercedes-Benz has announced a series of updates for the recently facelifted E-Class, including the adoption of a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The rear-wheel drive E350 BlueTec is no longer available with the seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission as this has been replaced by a newly developed 9G-Tronic nine-speed 'box. Despite the change, 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) takes the same 6.6 seconds as before so there aren't any improvements in terms of performance.
However, the two additional ratios and inclusion of stop/start function have improved fuel efficiency in the combined cycle from 51.4 mpg UK (42.8 mpg US or 5.5 liters /100 km) to 53.3 mpg UK (44.3 mpg US or 5.3 liters / 100 km), while CO2 emissions are down from 144 g/km to 138 g/km.
The E350 BlueTec equipped with 9G-Tronic will return 44.1 mpg UK (36.7 mpg US or 6.4 liters / 100 km) in the city, while the 7G-Tronic model achieved 40.9 mpg UK (34 mpg US or 6.9 liters / 100 km). On the highway, figures have remained the same at 60.1 mpg UK (50 mpg US or 4.7 liters / 100 km).
Aside from this change, Mercedes-Benz has removed the standard six-speed manual gearbox from the E220 BlueEfficiency Edition and replaced it with the aforementioned 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. As a result of this change, mpg numbers have increased from 60.1 mpg UK (50 mpg US or 4.7 liters / 100 km ) to 64.2 mpg UK (53.4 mpg US or 4.4 liters / 100 km), while CO2 emissions have been slashed from 132 g/km to 114 g/km. Thanks to these changes, the revised model is Euro 6 compliant.
The E-Class lineup will also include from now on an E200 NGD which is a natural-gas model powered by a 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine taken from the B200 Natural Gas Drive. It outputs 154 bhp (115 kW) and 199 lb-ft (269 Nm) of torque which should be enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time in 10.4 seconds. Mercedes-Benz says it has a combined cycle economy of 4.3 kg / 62 miles (100 km) which transformed into mpg represents 44.8 mpg UK (37.3 mpg US or 6.3 liters / 100 km).

Why no performance improvements despite the adoption of 9G? Are they doing a 'soft launch' of the transmission before they stretch it?

The gearbox is probably introduced purely to improve the fuel economy.

Since Friday, the world's first 9-speed automatic transmission for rear-wheel drive platform, the E 350 Bluetec (currently without 4matic) ordered for the sedan and the wagon.

Next, it is in models of the new C-Class (W205, from March 2014) introduced.
2013 exclusively for the E 350 Bluetec will receive this transmission.
The transmission (NAG3) is currently designed for 700 NM (like the 7G-Tronic Plus, NAG2FE +) and has 9 forward gears with a higher spread (9.16 instead of 6.0). Here, the first transition is much shorter, and the 9 Gear ratios are slightly longer than compared to NAG2FE + (7G-Tronic Plus).
In the E 350 Bluetec was installed a longer gear rear axle ratio (2.24 instead of 2.47) (also due to the shorter translate the first programs) also. So in the 9th Transition the overall ratio is considerably longer and thus the speed level was significantly lowered (at 100 km / h to 25%). What is the total fuel consumption for good.

The sprint is completed as in the s + NAG2FE in NAG3 in 6.6 to 100 km / hr. This may be because that the NAG2FE + in combination with the 350 Bluetec in the 3rd Speed 100 km / h is reached at 3970 U / min. Therefore even more horsepower is achieved at the speed. Since the first courses of NAG3 are translated shorter, the E 350 Bluetec happened with NAG3 the 100 km / h mark in just 4325 r / min. In this area are located on not so much horsepower. This could explain the same sprint times. The shorter translation will not help the bottom from 0 km / h with this engine, because the traction is the limiting factor.
The NAG3 has a controlled electric oil pump. It enables the reliable oil supply while driving and the fact that it is operated electrically, the start-stop function allows. When NAG2FE + there was a conventional oil pump, and always marched with an additional electric oil pump for start-stop function.

Furthermore, the shift-by-wire function for the Direct Select lever behind the steering wheel is fully integrated into the planetary gear. An external shift-by-wire module as in NAG2FE + is no longer necessary. If you moved, for example, when ignited with lowered side windows of P in N, R or D could perform the work of this module quite well. This noise is completely eliminated with the NAG3.

The transmission has a hydrodynamic converter incl Doppelturbinentorsionsdämpfer and centrifugal pendulum. This is inter alia necessary to allow the extended translation no vibrations occur, which would then be transferred to the passenger compartment.
The NAG3 housing is made of magnesium as before. The sump is made of plastic. So that the weight of 1 kg vs. the NAG2FE + could be reduced.
The 9 forward gears are realized with four planetary gearsets and six shifting elements.
The NAG3 can perform multiple downshifts when needed. How far has the NAG3 two shift programs (ecological and athletic). Manual intervention is possible via the Direct Select rockers.

Overall, a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 6.5%, this also depends on the engine. When OM642LS the E 350 Bluetec saving is 3.6%.

Whether the NAG3 at higher speeds when decelerating in the free running mode (connection to the motor is disconnected) goes, is not known. While this would have little fuel to be injected into the engine (so the engine does not stall), but vs. the fuel cut would be the vehicle due to the lower resistance significantly longer "sail". This function makes of vehicles without a hybrid drive only above 50 km / h sense because is disabled in hybrid vehicles, the engine and convenience features (such as air and power steering) can be powered from the lithium-ion battery.

The transmission was developed in the MTC in Stuttgart Untertürkheim and is produced in Hedelfingen sub. It should therefore be 100% Daimler.

New nine-speed automatic transmission debuts in the Mercedes-Benz E 350 BlueTEC: Premiere of the new 9G-TRONIC

Stuttgart. The first nine-speed automatic transmission with torque converter, the 9G-TRONIC for premium vehicles, is celebrating its world premiere: equipped with the innovative power transmission, the E 350 BlueTEC is set to become one of the most fuel-efficient six-cylinder diesel models in its class. Thanks to the high level of efficiency of the patented transmission design, NEDC fuel consumption in the E-Class is reduced to 5.3 litres of diesel per 100 km. As is typical of the brand, the transmission features outstanding comfort and barely perceptible gear changes. The E 350 BlueTEC featuring the 9G-TRONIC as standard is available to order with immediate effect. Despite the extended scope of functions, the pricing for both the Saloon and Estate models remains unchanged.

In the E 350 BlueTEC, which is available as Saloon and Estate models and comes fitted with the new 9G-TRONIC as standard, the 185 kW (252 hp) V6 diesel engine has an average NEDC fuel consumption of 5.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (Estate: 5.5 l/100 km), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 138 g/km (Estate: 144 g/km). As a result, the new models with 9G-TRONIC undercut their predecessors in terms of both consumption and CO2 emissions. The higher number of gears and the broader gear ratio spread help to increase drive comfort and enable a significant enhancement to be achieved in terms of converting engine power into traction.

Perfect interaction: E 350 BlueTEC with V6 diesel engine and 9G-TRONIC

On the one hand, the overall reduction in engine speed improves NVH comfort and therefore the pleasant sense of well-being on board the E-Class, and on the other also cuts down external noise by up to 4 dB(A), thus reducing the strain on the environment.

The reduced fuel consumption of the E 350 BlueTEC with 9G-TRONIC has primarily been achieved as a result of the high level of efficiency of the transmission. As part of this, the broad ratio spread of 9.15 for gears one to nine enables a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort. Shortened shift and reaction times ensure optimum spontaneity combined with outstanding ease of shifting. In manual mode and the S program in particular, the 9G-TRONIC responds significantly more spontaneously and enhances driving pleasure.

The particular ease of shifting of the new 9G-TRONIC – a focal point during development and a hallmark feature of a Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission - comes courtesy of a comprehensive package of measures. These include the novel direct control system which enables short, barely perceptible gear changes. The combination of double torsional damper and centrifugal pendulum technology in the torque converter ensures outstanding drive comfort. Together with the extended gear ratio spread, higher speeds can now be driven at lower engine speeds for even greater comfort. In reality this translates for example into being able to drive at 120 km/h in 9th gear with an engine speed of around only 1350 rpm.

Advanced technology for superior power transmission

In the case of the 9-speed automatic transmission, the development engineers also focused on the area of "compact lightweight construction". Despite two additional gears and a maximum transferable torque of up to 1000 Newton metres, the new automatic transmission requires as little installation space as its predecessor and, in addition, is lighter. The two-piece housing design has been retained: the torque converter housing is made of lightweight aluminium, while the transmission housing with weight-optimised plastic oil pan is made of an even lighter magnesium alloy.

Another goal was to implement the nine gears with a minimal number of planetary gear sets and shift elements. Intensive, computer-based system analysis and mock-up made it possible to realise this goal with just four simple planetary gear sets and six shift elements. Three speed sensors monitor operation and provide the transmission control system with corresponding data for effective shifting. Here it is possible for several gears to be jumped when accelerating or decelerating, should the driving conditions call for it.

To ensure the reliable and at the same time highly efficient supply of the durable and shear-resistant 2nd-generation synthetic fuel economy engine oil, the new automatic transmission is fitted with two pumps. The considerably smaller mechanical main pump, featuring an off-axis design, is located next to the main shaft and is chain-driven and fed by a separate electric auxiliary pump. This design enables the flow of lubrication and coolant to be controlled actively on demand and also means that the 9G-TRONIC can benefit from a start/stop system. Thanks to the world's first direct control system in a planetary automatic transmission with nine gears, it has also been possible to significantly increase hydraulic efficiency within the transmission.

Around 22 million automatic transmissions from Mercedes-Benz since 1961

Mercedes-Benz has been developing and producing high-quality automatic transmissions featuring outstanding ease of shifting, optimum energy efficiency and dependable durability for more than 50 years. To date, a total of around 22 million automatic passenger car transmissions have left the manufacturing plant at Stuttgart-Hedelfingen, close to the Group's headquarters in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim.

The 9G-TRONIC is suitable for rear-wheel and all-wheel drives as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid drive systems and will be used in almost all model series and engines in the coming years.

The E 350 BlueTEC fitted with the 9G-TRONIC as standard is available to order as Saloon or Estate models with immediate effect. As such the benefits of the new automatic transmission are being passed on to customers at no extra cost. The market launch will take place in September 2013.

Prices for Germany (incl. 19% VAT):
E 350 BlueTEC Saloon 54,710.25 euros
E 350 BlueTEC Estate 57,923.25 euros

I hope this new transmission will be much better than the current 7-speeder. The downshift responsiveness and speed of the 7-speeder are just plain mediocre to say the least. ZF just makes better automatic transmissions at this time.

I hope I'm wrong, but it seems quite evident now that when Mercedes planned For the non-AMG engines and transmissions some 10 years ago, they really had placed the wrong bet and went for outright economy and low emission and placed less emphasis on engine output and performance. The result is the situation we are seeing now where Audi and BMW are trouncing Mercedes in almost all engine classes except for the V8 engines. I also don't see the Audi and BMW engines being to far behind on the emissions stakes.

We just received our first 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 in Indigo Blue! This is a new color, only available on the 2014 E-Class. It is really hard to get colors to show up properly in pictures and on your monitor. I would say this color most closely resembles Steel Grey but in blue instead of grey. It is much lighter than Lunar Blue but nothing like Quartz Blue. It is not purple. It looks purple on my screen. I might describe it as slate or denim. Come take a look!

As fuel prices are constantly increasing, the need for a reduction of operating costs is more timely than ever. Mercedes-Benz understands the need for fuel efficient and eco-friendly executive sedans, which reflects to Stuttgart’s range of diesel and natural gas variants, that are available throughout the company’s line-up. Today, MB introduces two new economy variants for the E-Class, the E200 Natural Gas Drive and the E220 BlueTEC BlueEFFICIENCY Edition.

The E200 NGD can drive both on petrol and on natural gas, with its advantages coming to the fore when running on the latter, as the natural gas consumption is at 4.6 kg per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 116 g per kilometre. The natural gas mode is also kinder to the environment than petrol or diesel engines thanks to its cleaner exhaust gases. When the natural gas tank empties, the E200 NGD switches seamlessly to petrol, with the fuel consumption at 6.3 litres of unleaded petrol (NEDC combined) for every 100 kilometres driven (CO2 emissions: 147 g per kilometre). Due to the bivalent drive, the range of the E200 NGD is 1300 km (400km on natural gas) or up to 1600 km with the optional 80l petrol tank. The natural gas is stored securely in three containers – one behind the rear backrest and two under the floor of the boot. Together they hold 121.5 litres (19.5 kg) of natural gas. Despite the additional gas tank, the large boot offers 400 litres of space.

Under the hood of the E200 NGD lies the new four-cylinder petrol engine with spray-guided direct injection, part of the BlueDIRECT family of Mercedes‑Benz petrol engines, which generates an output of 115 kW (156 hp) and maximum torque of 270 Nm at 1250 rpm. The first 100 km/h from standstill come in 10.4 seconds and the top speed is 220 km/h.

The E220 BlueTEC BlueEFFICIENCY Edition, on the other hand, uses a 2143 cubic centimetres four-cylinder diesel engine with direct injection, with 125 kW (170 hp) and 400 Nm of torque. The special model’s drive package features a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission that has been optimised with respect to driving comfort and consumption, as well as an ECO start/stop function. Other differences include low-resistance tyres on 16 or 17-inch wheels, the lowering of the chassis by up to 15 millimetres and a radiator blind that directs the flow of air as required. The result is a fuel consumption of 4.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined)and CO2 emissions of 114 grams per kilometre, while the 0 to 100 km/h time is 8.4 seconds and the top speed is at 227 km/h.

Do I want one?

If you're in the market for a cushy, classy, safe-as-milk sedan with a fine interior and the cash outlay isn't going to break the bank, the E250 is a very compelling proposition. Despite all the gee-whiz gimcrackery going on, it doesn't feel as if it's attempting to be more than it is. We like a car that knows what it is and is confident with its place in the world. And the refreshed E -- perhaps more than any other car in its segment -- is exactly that.

Why Mercedes is giving E class a midlife revamp

PORTLAND, Ore -- With competition growing in the mid-sized luxury car segment, Mercedes-Benz decided to do a major midcycle overhaul of the E-class range rather than wait three years for the next generation.

"It is a very competitive segment," said Bart Herring, general manager of product planning for Mercedes-Benz USA. "We wanted to stay out front from a technological and design perspective. We had to go beyond what is typical for a midcycle change."

BMW's 5 series is the traditional rival of the E class, but competition also comes from the Lexus GS, Audi A6, Infiniti M, Jaguar XF and Cadillac CTS. Hyundai has entered the segment with the Equus, and Herring said the E class also competes with similar-sized crossovers.

The E-class range includes a sedan, station wagon, coupe and convertible. Mercedes added the E400 Hybrid, updated the engine in the E250 BlueTEC diesel and now offers that model with optional all-wheel drive. The E63 high performance AMG sedan and station wagon have been added.

Mercedes brought all of the models to a full-line preview for journalists here in August. The rollout started in April with the re-engineered sedan and wagon, followed by the coupe and convertible in June.

The diesel cars go on sale this month. The E250 BlueTEC diesel models have a new four-cylinder turbocharged 2.1-liter engine that makes 195 hp and 369 pounds-feet of torque.

The E class got a new hood, bumper and headlights. For the first time, there are two front end choices. The Luxury model has a traditional sedan grille with the Mercedes star on the hood. The Sport model has the star integrated into a new grille.

The rear doors on the sedan and station wagon were also reshaped. LED lights are standard in the rear and optional in the front.

The interior was given the same instrument cluster as the more expensive CLS sedan. On the coupe and convertible, the shifter was moved from the center console to the steering wheel.

Mercedes has packaged 30-plus safety and handling features into what it calls Intelligent Drive. Some are optional. The more technologically advanced safety and handling systems are included in a $2,800 option package.

All models come standard with a stereo camera system that surveys 1,600 feet in front of the car and can detect cars, pedestrians and cyclists from 160 feet away, said Dave Larsen, E-class product manager for Mercedes-Benz USA.

Mercedes-Benz had projected a 45-mpg highway fuel economy rating on the newest Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but this is the first time it has offered official fuel economy numbers. However, the EPA had not posted the diesel sedan's fuel economy numbers on its Web site as of Wednesday morning.

In comparison, the 2014 BMW 328d returns 32 mpg in city driving and 45 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 2013 Volkswagen Passat diesel model returns 31 mpg in city driving and 43 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The base 2013 Mercedes-Benz 350 returns 20 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Diesel cars and trucks are becoming increasingly popular with consumers, since they typically offer 20 to 30 percent better fuel economy and a greater driving range than comparable vehicles with gasoline engines.

But, diesel fuel costs more than gasoline. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Wednesday pegged the average price for a gallon of diesel fuel at $3.94 versus $3.55 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 Bluetec rear-wheel-drive model starts at $52,325, including a $925 destination charge.

Edmunds says: Mercedes-Benz is out with some solid fuel economy numbers on its new 2014 E250 Bluetec sedan. It's critical information that should help buyers in this segment.
