I was hoping that somebody can answer these questions:

Does the new C250 utilise the same engine as the previous one, but just tweaked for more power and torque, or is it a new engine?

The C250 Bluetec has the same power and torque as the w204 C250 CDI, but its acceleration is significantly better. That can't be all owing to a lighter vehicle surely?

Oh and if you didn't factor fuel economy into this (even though it's hard to discount the diesel here), what would you choose between a C250/C250 bluetec and C250 bluetec/C300?

Thanks guys!

Yes the C250 has a new 2.0 four cylinder that debuted in the A-class, it replaced the previous 1.8 in the W204 C250. Power is up by 5kw and torque is up by 40nm.

C250 Bluetec has same engine and gearbox as previous W204 C250 CDI but is Euro 6 compliant and has Adblue injection for the exhaust system. Yep the better acceleration is only due to the lighter mass.

I haven't driven the new C250 so cannot judge the engine characteristics to compare to the C250 Bluetec, but I drove a previous W204 C250 CDI and was mostly impressed by the engine, except perhaps for a noisy idle. It has very good low to midrange pull and also excellent fuel economy (6.5ltr/100km with a mix of town and highway driving). I think the C250 will be smoother and quieter and have a wider power band, but it doesn't come close to the low to mid range torque of the diesel, 350nm against 500nm, which counts alot during overtaking.

My choice would be C250 Bluetec ahead of C250. As for C250 Bluetec against C300 Hybrid, I would take the C250 Bluetec cause it probably won't use that much more fuel than the C300 Hybrid and will be cheaper to buy.

Latest C-Class news comes from East London. :)

Second C-Class plant starts production: Start of Production of New Mercedes-Benz C-Class in East London, South Africa
  • East London plant starts production as the second location in the global C-Class production network
  • Fourth C-Class generation already at the East London plant
  • Markus Schäfer: "We are ramping up our C-Class production as planned with the start of production in South Africa."
East London, South Africa / Stuttgart, Germany – About three months after the start of production of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class at the Bremen plant in Germany, the second of the total of four locations started production of the highest volume Mercedes-Benz model line: For the East London plant, this is already the fourth generation of the C-Class. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan is the first Mercedes-Benz model to be produced on four continents: Bremen and East London will be followed by the plants in Tuscaloosa/Alabama (USA) and Beijing (China) within the next months.

Markus Schäfer, Divisional Board Member Mercedes-Benz Cars, Production and Supply Chain Management: "We are ramping up our C-Class production as planned with the start of production in South Africa. Our youngest model is received very well by customers around the globe. The additional production capacities in East London are thus available at the right time to optimally serve the wishes of our customers."

The Bremen plant, in its role as the so-called lead plant, is controlling global production of the C-Class – from the tooling strategy to the training of the colleages from the international plants to production quality. With this, the company ensures top quality at all production sites from the outset. In total, some 500 employees from the international plants - among them more than 200 from East London - completed intensive training also in Germany in order to pass on their knowledge as multipliers in their respective home plants.

Arno van der Merwe, CEO and Vice President Manufacturing Mercedes-Benz South Africa: "The new C-Class marks another milestone for Mercedes-Benz in South Africa and for the East London plant. We have created 550 new jobs at the plant and have also made significant investments for the qualification of our staff. This goes especially with regard to the host of innovative manufacturing technologies which have been introduced at the plant for the first time with the new C-Class. We are thus optimally prepared to write the next chapter of our 'made by Mercedes-Benz in South Africa' success story".

About the Mercedes-Benz East London plant

Mercedes-Benz has had a presence in South Africa since 1954 and acquired majority ownership of the East London plant in 1984. The new C-Class marks the fourth vehicle generation of the highest volume Mercedes-Benz model line to be manufactured in South Africa's Eastern Cape. Since the year 2000 the plant exported sedans to right-hand-drive markets, since 2007 also left-hand-drive vehicles for export to the USA. The East London plant's excellent production quality has repeatedly won national as well as international recognition, most recently with the 2013 J.D. Power Plant Quality Silver Award, placing it among the best plants in the Europe/Africa region for the fifth consecutive year. In 2013 about 2,700 employees manufactured more than 50,000 C-Class sedans. As of 2014 the plant produces the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class as one of four global locations in a production network with the German lead plant in Bremen, the U.S. plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and the Chinese production site Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. (BBAC). Source: Daimler

AH thank you very much for that. I didn't like the previous C250 at all. Glad to know it's a new engine :)

The C250 Bluetec must be really fuel-efficient with the adblue system. It's quite impressive how much lighter the car is considering its increased performance.

Yeah I was thinking that the C250 bluetec would feel faster in the daily grind.

Sorry I was referring to the C300 petrol that will launch later this year (175 kW and 370 Nm). Would it be significantly better than the C250 Bluetec (again, not considering fuel-efficiency)?

Thanks again Rolf(y)

I'm wondering, only Benz has this auto brakes system ? And only on the S-class until now ?

Thanks.

No, a lot of other car manufacturers have this system available, but Mercedes Benz is the the only one I know of that has it standard on some of their cars (the new A,C and S-class). I think it's also available for the rest of the entire range but as an option. I think it's safe to assume that all new cars introduced at least after the A-class will have it standard.

A few cool pictures. The first two are der_landgraf's work. He is immensely talented!

Not a fair comparison considering the standard spec BMW vs. the AMG spec Mercedes Benz, but wow I like the C-Class way more and I drive an F30 currently!
