M5 [Official] BMW M5 (F10)

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
I love the start stop on M5. So awesome to hear the monster wake up every time...Great sound and very fast

Auto engine stop? I didn't get an M5 to use that fuel saving sh1t! I drive with the M2 button activated (everything set to max performance) and auto start-stop is disabled in this mode. I have never noticed any clunk noises from my M5 but I'll check next time I drive it (it's school holidays and I am outside the UK at the moment so it will be a few days)

A quick search of Google suggests that you are not alone. I can't post a link to you-know-where but search for this:
Clunky stop/start - anyone else

This is the first Dual Clutch I've experience which has auto stop so couldn't honestly say it isn't present on other makes of dual clutchers but turn the radio off and listen it's a disturbing noise when you hear it and not in keeping with the otherwise refined nature of the car.

I only drive it occasional so haven't learned all the setting but whilst I like the HUD I'm not a huge fan of the rev counter display it throws up on M1/2 finding it distracting and don't know how to disable it so stick with the basic setup.

@klier - please do not interfere with Deckhook's entirely reasonable enquiry regarding the Start-Stop function "clunk". It's possible that, coupled with the DCT, a mechanical issue could be at play.

@Deckhook, if at all possible try and record the issue (will a phone vid be sufficient to adequately pick up the occurrence?) and show it to your dealer. If you so choose, please share it with us if it is discernible. Sometimes these things are subtle and are felt much more than heard. In that case a vid is useless and the car has to go into the dealer.

I must say, not that my 3er has anywhere near the tech of the F10 M5, but I too do find that the Start-Stop function is discernibly clunky (a big shudder) at times.

^The actual stop/start of the engine is smooth in fact one of the smoothest I've experienced but this clunking noise appears to be a function of the gearbox itself that sounds like its coming from the bottom left of the dash where it joins the centre console. I will take a video of it when next in the car and it would be great if ACE could do the same to compare.

Excuse me? Don't interfere? There is no issue. It's a complete non issue.

Because it is a 4 pot. The auto start stop works flawlessly on the 6 and 8 cylinder models.

@martinbo lol go on explain your point to him again so he catches the irony..

PS
Don't you know that one can not use irony or joke about bmw.. its very seriously serious matter.. the tension is high. bite the neck of anyone who approaches the perimiter..

PPS
I enjoy this to much :D

You seriously need to re-read the original post I asked ACE about. In that did I state the car had a problem or did I state it in the posts there after.... NO. My question was did he have any idea what it was and yes its a quite loud clunk that you'll even hear from the back seat if the radio is off, you really need to wind your neck in and lose the fanboy attitude here but of course this query I'm asking is something you've known all about with your extensive knowledge of the M5/6 which is why you've given it your usual 'old' tag. LOL

As I said its quite noisy and out of character with the otherwise refined car that is the M5. A mate has a diesel A6 with DSG and auto stop/start so will check he out next time I see him.

I'd love for Scott to talk to the technical guys at BMW to see why this is so noisy.

Thanks for sharing Deckhook. That doesn't sound right at all.

Yeah it doesn't sound right but it seems that after searching other videos on the subject this is indeed the norm, I don't think my wording of a 'disturbing' noise is wrong when you consider how refined the rest of the car is, it's not like the actual stop/start function piss poor far from it in fact as it's beautifully smooth with very little shake at all.

Could it be that the car goes to neutral when it turns off and goes into gear when it starts ?

Yeah, God forbid you actually looking for something yourself.

Would you grow up for once, my fourteen year old shows more maturity than you do at times.

So tell me Klier what is it you dislike in the video I posted showing the noise?

If only to understand how your mind works.

Call the dealer and ask what it is all about. There will most certainly be someone who can tell you exactly what sound is caused by what.

Just checked, mine doesn't make that noise. @Deckhook, looks like only some cars make that noise but since quite a few do make that noise BMW are unlikely to view it as a fault.

:D

Yeah, it was more a comment on BMW service departments. No matter what is wrong with your car, that will be their response.

I assumed all did it but with what you are saying it appears that's not the case at all but you are right BMW won't view this as a fault unless everyone complains and even then there's no guarantee they'll do anything about it unless it caused failures which on checking the web doesn't seem to be happening.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
