M5 [Official] BMW M5 (F10)

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
What an odd crash. The oversteer moment didn't appear that rapid in terms of rotation rate. It appears that the driver didn't correct the slide quickly enough and in the end not enough lock was applied.
Do we know whether a BMW instructor was driving or a customer?

That being said, if I'm not mistaken that particular corner is notorious (and thus features in several Ring crash clips) for sending cars spinning so quite possibly I'm missing something having never driven in a scenario (car + corner) remotely resembling this.

^ awesome read, tnx

I don't agree with the whole analysis. Like I said, if you drive there every day, something will happen every now and then.

I think it was a load of unsubstantiated, speculative, swollocks, and seems to be some bizarre pitch to apply for a job as a BMW Ring Taxi driver.

"Looking at the photo above, I think the driver knows it too."

Er, right. You can tell that from a photo?

"BMW, you need local experts with thousands and THOUSANDS of laps of the 'Ring. Not just in racing, not just in testing. But in public driving too. Because public driving is a skill set all on its own.

Your brand, your reputation, your call."

I was thinking the exact same thing. I do think the GT2 probably pushed the M5 driver over it's limit, but that could have happened to any experienced racer really

Isn't it possible that the oversteer was due to a loss of traction since the curve was over a crest?

Since we are playing armchair drivers, my take, he was probably trying to entertain the passengers and induce a drift and got too enthusiastic with the right foot. The difference in traction between the surfaces the left and right tires were on also probably facilitated the quick Armco meeting.

I agree with Sunny. It seemed like the driver started the drift rather late into the corner (actually, it was on exit).

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany. Official website: BMW M
