M5 [Official] BMW M5 (F10)

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
The M4 hasn't exactly been praisied for its traction. And the M5 have lot more power to cope with. This is the way to go , like it or not.

Reading what Van Meel said I think we are talking about standard AWD ("to cope with the additional power and torque") with no option of RWD ("but will still have RWD driving characteristics"). Neither of those statements suggest a RWD Option on the next M5.

Get used to the idea: no RWD, no manual and no NA engines.

It might have changed because of new leadership. But the original strategy called for RWD with optional xDrive.
With the M5 in this generation the question was asked xDrive or lighter? Which is why they went RWD only with F10 M.
There won't be a manual on M5 and above cars any longer

BMW M5 30 Jahre M5 special edition (US-spec) / Barrett-Jackson

Most powerful production BMW ever
The very last BMW M5 "30 Jahre M5" (US-spec) has been auctioned for a whopping $700,000 at an event organized by Barrett-Jackson.

BMW's most powerful production model ever was limited to 300 examples but only 30 cars made it stateside. The last one was auctioned a few days ago by Barrett-Jackson and it went under the hammer for $700,000, with all the money going to the BMW Club of America Foundation which organizes teen driver safety programs among other charitable actions.

The winning bidder was none other NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrik who also has a BMW dealership in Charleston, South Carolina. You will probably not like hearing this but Rick said he isn't going to actually use the M5 "30 Jahre M5" as "this baby's going to go right beside the i8 in the museum. The only miles it's going to get are in the truck sending it from Arizona to North Carolina."

To refresh your memory, the special M5 packs a mighty 600 HP & 700 Nm punch from an upgraded V8 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine. It rockets to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds and when equipped with the optional M Driver's Package it will do 190 mph (305 km/h) but it's all in vain for this particular car which will just sit in a museum showing off its Individual Frozen Dark Silver paint and dark chrome accents.

Yeah, the E39 is one of the most special BMWs ever made. I can see why so many think it's the best.

The car introduced the quad exhaust for M, that alone makes it special.

I agree that most M5 fans feel the E39 was the ultimate M5. I'm an E34 M5 owner and actually have a site dedicated to the car's journey. (E34 M5 Site). I did write a post on the uniqueness of the E34 and in the first 2 lines call out the "superiority" of the E39's power plant.

Speaking of the ultimate M5.....

...I hope you guys haven't forgotten the E60 M5, that in the end got a 600 HP NA V10 with DCT gearbox. Too bad they never sold one :(

Yes remember this baby, the 25th anniversary edition that was never built, it had some carbon fibre components, no rear seat and an enlarged 5.5 ltr V10 with 580HP (which is 20hp more than the F10 M5 and 5hp more than the Competition version!) and more than 540nm of torque and 0-100 in less than 4.1sec! It did the ring in under 8min, 20sec faster than the standard E60 M5, apparently got over 290km/h at Doettinger Hohe straight! Amazing car if they brought it out for production!

The gearbox was called SMG if I recall, a sequential manual, and it was a pile of sh!t that pulled down the whole experience of the car.

The car above had a DCT gearbox, but like I said it never went on sale.

And SMG is glorious. Loved it. A gearbox for real men.

Hey, I still have the SMG in my E61 and its perfect , has not failed yet. The E61 will soon be celebrating its 8th birthday.
The SMG was tailor made for the M5 within our Motorsports programme in which we were participating in F1 at that time.
It was developed especially for the car and not an afterthought like the manual was.
I remember Gerhard Richter driving the manual M5 and then coming back to clipboard holding staff and then informed them it was shit against the SMG.

@ Klier did your 645i have the manual or SMG?

Wow it would be fantastic if they could have used that 580hp V10 engine with some KERS system in the F10 M5!

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
