8 Series (G15) [Official] BMW 8-Series Gran Coupé (G16)


The second-generation of the BMW 8 Series consists of the G14 (convertible version), G15 (two-door coupe version) grand tourers, and G16 (four-door "Gran Coupe" sedan version) executive cars (E). The G14/G15/G16 generation has been in production since 2018, and is often collectively referred to as the G15. It replaced the F06/F12/F13 6 Series lineup. Production: 2018-

You get the sense that this car really looks good in the metal when you watch all these videos ....they all gone on to say how gorgeous it looks, better than X and Y.
 
I don't think white or light colors does the rear 3/4 any favors.

From the side as well. My take: it's because the design 'stops' at that awkward boot shutline. The flow from the side is stops with that line, and the C pillar is 'cut off' . It works when you draw a silhouette or squint, but sadly not in real life. My brain is seeing a boot where sheetmetal should be.

There is also my personal issue with the placement of the rear lights, they should have been slightly higher. And they also wrap around the side too much for my liking. They're more side lights than rear lights....
Years ago, you couldn't even see the rear- or front lights from a side view. Nowadays they stretch too far into the side. IMO of course. I am starting to sound old perhaps, but the 8er has so many things I find awkward....
 
I had hoped that this car would eventually grow on me. But unfortunately...no. It simply doesn't work for me (save the interior, which is quite nice). And that's a pity as I would really love "to love" a new BMW product.
 
Peeked through the dealership window tonight and they have one on the floor, I'm not moved. It's too long and ungainly looking. I still need to see it close up and in the day time.

I think @klier put it’s finger on it; the boot shutline stops the flow of the side design. Something similar could be seen on the 5er E60. Could never get used to that shutline on the side of the car.
 
I just cant get over how ugly the back of the 8GC looks, especially when compared to its predecessor, the 6GC. That car was the complete opposite with perhaps the finest looking rear end of any 4dr coupe and was a much better looking car all round.

There's plenty else to love.

Subjective, I know... but it's been a while since a new BMW product has seriously "lit my fire". The F32 4 series coupe most certainly. The F12/13/06 6 series as well. Same applies to the F10 5 series. Since then, I've found nothing that I could be "passionate" about. The new G20/21 is a very nice car and currently arguably best in its' class. But it is not leaps and bounds above a now longer-in-tooth W205 C-Class or the Audi A4 (which, despite my perhaps obvious affinity for many VAG products, I personally don't really care for). The G30/31 5 series and G11 7 series are, to me, handsome cars...but alas...nothing more, nothing less. The F87 M2 coupe, on the other hand, is DAMN nice ! As for the remainder of BMWs' current model line, my feelings are ambivalent at best.
 
BMW have another winner on their hands.

I just cant get over how ugly the back of the 8GC looks, especially when compared to its predecessor, the 6GC. That car was the complete opposite with perhaps the finest looking rear end of any 4dr coupe and was a much better looking car all round.

This particular photo comparison exemplifies just how thoroughly BMWs' exterior design team have dropped the ball on the 8 series Gran Coupe. I simply cannot seem to suppress my urge to criticize its' looks. Could this be a form of compulsive neurosis ?:unsure: Or simply an expression of my disbelief that the manufacturer that brought us the 2007 CS Concept ,the 2012 F06 6er Gran Coupe and the 2014 VFL Concept presented something as visually unfortunate as the 8er GC.
