7 Series (G11) [Official] BMW 7 Series (G11/12)

The BMW G11 is the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series, produced from 2015 to 2022. Model codes: G11 (short-wheelbase version), and G12 (long-wheelbase version) luxury saloons, collectively referred to as the G11. Production: July 2015–2022. Model years: 2016–2022.
Nice thought, this "1 of a 100-100 years" scheme. What I just can't get used to, is the design of the LWB G12, especially in the last 2 pictures. To my eyes awkward looking, non-cohesive limousine, which wasn't meant to have a LWB. G11 looks much better from the side.

BMW 7 Series design immortalized in porcelain

The design of the 2016 BMW 7 Series is as dividing as ever, the BMW community and the auto industry having different views on the new luxury sedan. That’s always been the case but it doesn’t take away any of the credit the designers deserve. Looks will always be subjective. To illustrate its design, a team of architects immortalized the 7 Series in a porcelain sculpture. The sculpture was created by Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur (KPM) Berlin in collaboration with BMW and has an artistic which resembles the shape of the limousine, combining its silhouette – reduced to the essential elements of its design – with a monolithic porcelain pedestal.

The pedestal, in turn, has a surface structure that recalls the BMW 7 Series pattern used in communications. While the pedestal has a subtle glazing, the 1:18 scale car is made from white, matte bisque porcelain. The reduced light reflection and the absence of glaze lend it the look of Parian marble.

“Porcelain is a fascinating material and the name KPM Berlin represents a byword for top quality and innovative design, and embodies a passion for exquisite hand-craftsmanship,” says Nader Faghihzadeh, exterior designer for the BMW 7 Series. “The “Driving Luxury in Porcelain” sculpture provides an artistic window into the essence of the car’s very special design.”

“Our credo at KPM Berlin is ‘made to stay’. The BMW 7 Series is another of those icons that never goes out of fashion because its design is timeless. With this sculpture we are immortalizing the elegant dynamics and luxurious aesthetics of the new BMW 7 Series in an artwork,” said Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur chief designer Thomas Wenzel.

Only 500 units of the 30×17 cm (12 x 7 inches) will be made with Calligraphic “BMW 7 Series” lettering adorning the base of the pedestal, writing which can be personalized if desired. They will be available in select dealerships starting this July as part of the BMW Iconic Collection.

So this came to my e-mail yesterday and I saw the words "BMW" and "porcelain" in the e-mail's title, and I was like:

"What the f, is BMW making toilets now?"

:D

This is giving "rear wheel drive" a new sense. :)

This is actually interesting because the outline is not of the 7er as is the details that are shown on the sculpture.
It actually reminds me of the new 5er Gran Turismo. Which from one perspective is a quasi-7er which explains the more design sketch sculpture.
Look at the coupe-hatch outline and indeed the kinked up window line and how there is one single line that separates the upper section. Characteristics that will be seen on the new 5er Gran Turismo.

Do you see any similarities?

Without the rear spoiler thing, the rear looks very A7ish, with the pilar ending right near the boot - is that correct?

The hoffmeister is kicked up rather than being straight across like the F07 so there is not much metal between glass and pillar. The rear being sleeker helps balance this out. But this prototype uses a disguise on the rear deck so it is much better resolved.

The 7-series sold 872 units last month in the US. How is this model not cracking the 1,000 units barrier? I've honestly been disappointed in the sales of the G11 thus far. I thought it would at least match the S-class as it has done in the past. The US usually doesn't shy away from 7-series purchases.

According to some insider and sales man,the 7er is expriencing some tough time in China too..I travel a lot between big cities but I fail to see a single one on the street so far.

While deliveries of the 30,300-euro BMW X1 surged 68 percent to more than 51,000 vehicles, the new generation 7-Series struggled to make headway against the aging Mercedes S-Class. Sales of BMW’s 82,600-euro flagship sedan totaled 10,588 cars during the first quarter, less than half the deliveries of the S-Class.

I have seen 3 G11/G12 models in the last few days on the road and everytime I see one I have to do a double look to determine whether it is the new model and not a F01, especially the profile view unless I look at the bottom of the doors to see the hockey stick trim and then look at the front lights and all is know.

It will be very hard for BMW to penetrate S class market share. The S class is synonymous with being driven by the wealthy, it makes a statement, "I have made it". It also is more focused then the bimmer to provide an ultra-comfortable ride, which it does in spades which I think the majority of customers in this demographic desire.

For those of us who prefer a more sport oriented high-end larger auto and who maybe aren't as concerned about status, the 7 series and A8 are better choices. But I think there are fewer of us in this category.

I think the styling has a lot to with this. Although its an amazing car, it doesn't look as amazing or new as it is. Don't get me wrong, its handsome, but it's as if they did just enough to call it new.

Perhaps the the market responding with slow sales will get BMW's attention that styling does matter. I for one am glad that the sales are slow because BMW needs some sort of wake up call!

But the F01's sales in the US were very close or exceeded the W221's during a large part of its tenure. The G11 has debuted off the pace, which is a change and why I made my original post. Did the consumers change that quickly in the course of one generation of 7-series? And let's not forget this 7-series is quite cushy in Comfort mode.
