Hate to admit it but the engine in the E220d is just better than the 520d on several occasions now it's proven to be just faster.
Can't wait for the 8th of April

Engineers at BMW have been quite lazy the last 10 years in developing their diesel engines. 10 years ago the 4 cylinder 2 l diesel was upgraded to 184 ps and now we have only 6 ps more. The actual engine is lacking in refinement and noise compared to the engines of AUDI and especially MB. But in the decade before (1997) the four cylinder had only 88 ps so the improvement to 2007 was enormous. Its almost similar with the 6 cylinder. In 1997 it was 143 ps, in 2007 the single turbo was 233 ps and the biturbo 286 ps. In 2017 we have only a little improvement over these numbers.

In the 70's, 80's and 90's BMW were masters in engine development. Every new engine was class leading and put a lot of distance between it and its rivals from Audi and Mercedes but nowadays they are more or less on an equal footing. Who could forget the memorable 535i from 1980 with 160kw that was the same output been produced by the much bigger 4,5 V8 from Mercedes and then the incredible 1985 M5 with 210kw 3,5ltr 24 valve inline six, it produced more power than the Mercedes 500 SE 5,0ltr V8 (195kw) and nearly on par with the 560 SEC V8 (220kw). Then the E36 328i with the brilliant 2,8 ltr inline six that made mincemeat of the A4 2,8 and C280 six cylinders. The 325tds with 105kw was the defining Turbo diesel car in the late 1990's.

I just hope to not read or hear any more stories of snapping cam chains from 520d owners.

Just like the 3.0d in every form is currently the best diesel engine in the world. Not much has changed.

But I get the point and agree, the difference was much bigger in the old days.
But then again, everything is close together in the premium class these days. All German brands have amazing engines.

Please correct if i'm wrong, but isn't the BMW 2 litre diesel engine in the G30 a carry over from the F10 and due an upgrade soon?

The G30 5er looks good in standard trim as long you specify it with LED foglights and bicolour wheels.

Maybe the G20 will receive the next upgrade of the 2,0ltr diesel but the 5-series I estimate will receive this upgrade maybe only in 1 1/2 to 2 years time.

I personally think BMW still build great engines but they no longer the masters. Looking at their 4-cylinder engines in both diesel and petrol forms Audi/VW and Mercedes have all cought up and are be better and more advanced in some instances. Their inline 6 is still their best engines and likely better than rivals but again Audi and Mercedes are close. Let's wait for the new inline 6 Mercedes engines and see whether these will surpass the BMW engines.

I think the main point still applies: the G30 has what it probably is the most refined interior in the segment for now.
I do absolutely not agree. The G30's interior has a messy layout, it looks like it is designed of several different committees that couldn't agree on anything, there is no natural flow. And to top it all is the stupid aftermarket screen on top of the dashboard.

The first official images of China’s long-wheelbase 2017 BMW 5-Series have leaked online before the vehicle’s debut on April 19 at the Shanghai Auto Show.

The release of these photos come about 7 weeks after unofficial images of the car made their way onto the web and show a mid-size sedan that promises interior space to rival that of the regular 7-Series.

Officially dubbed the 5-Series Li in China, the wheelbase of the car has been stretched by 13.3 cm (5.2 in) to provide rear seat passengers with additional legroom. Viewed from the outside, the extended doors are the most obvious giveaway of the long-wheelbase car.

Inside, these images show that that rear seat passengers will benefit from more room than ever before and enjoy the perks of a touchscreen display on the arm while being surrounded in sumptuous Nappa leather. Two 10.25 inch screens have also been installed in the rear.

When sales of the model begin, three engine options will be available. The first, the 525 Li, will have a 2.0-liter turbo’d four-cylinder with 224 hp while the second will be the 530 Li with a punchier 252 hp 2.0-liter. Last but not least will be the 540 Li, installed with a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six offering up 340 hp.
