Luxury Car of the Year 2019: overall winner BMW 5 Series 520d SE

OUR 2017 OVERALL Car of the Year, the BMW 5 Series, is still impressing, a full two years on from that success, and that’s despite some serious new competition being available.

This year, it has faced challenges from Mercedes-Benz’s updated E-Class and an all-new Audi A6, yet it’s still numero uno – which goes to show how far ahead of the pack the 5 Series was when it was launched.

Powered by a punchy yet frugal 2.0-litre diesel engine, it will swoosh along pretty much any road more calmly and quietly than its rivals, and if you factor in its impeccable driving position, piloting a 5 Series is as relaxing as a Swedish massage.

Speaking of which, massaging seats are on the options list, but you get plenty of other equipment as standard, including what is easily the best infotainment system in the class; it’s so simple to use, despite being loaded with features. Heck, you can even impress your friends by turning up the volume or switching things on and off by waving your hands around, using the optional gesture control. The BMW 5 Series really does have something for everyone.

Yet when it comes to category honours, it would be easy to give this to the Audi A8; it is one of the most luxurious cars on the planet. The BMW 6 Series GT, too, is a car with exceptionally good pampering techniques. Yet the 5 Series is just as good in so many ways, and we can find no area in which it drops the ball.

The interior is virtually identical to the 6 Series’ and just as well made, but for a comparatively bargain price.The infotainment system is the same, too, and you can, if you want, spec it up with nearly every luxury feature that the A8 offers. It’s the supreme luxury package without the exclusive price tag.

The 2007 Audi A5 was the first car I remember with LED daytime running front lights. The FL E39 introduced the DRL (non LED) in 2000/2001 with its distinctive "ring coronas". The 1998 S-class was one of the first cars with LED rear lights.

One of the first cars with High Intensity brights, maybe the 1975 Ford Escort Sport?

LOL. Audi's early DRL was horrible and distasteful beyond measure. And the whole idea was ripped straight from BMW. They're good at that.

Might be, but BMW is the one who started the DLR trend of fancy design. Before the E39 FL, all cars had ugly no design lights.

The first LED lights (tail lights) on a vehicle was actually Maserati with their nice 3200GT.

I believe Mercedes was the first one with LED lights, on some version of the S class. W220 I think.

BMW has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to lighting technology even the first automobile to use xenon lights was the E32 7 series ....add DRL , OLEDs and Laser lights to the list . Other manufacturers will soon follow.

No need to get your underwear in a twist. Is this really the first instance in history where one brand debuts something and another does something similar with wider adoption? Would you like me to post how many cars copied BMW's angel eyes look vs. how many copied Audi's LED light strip? It's clear which look spread across the industry in huge numbers. Whether Audi's implementation was ugly or not is irrelevant.

Sometimes life works like that.

I wasn't even debating that. All I am saying is this look became prolific:

We can close this topic up. Maserati 3200GT really was the first production car to have LED tail lights, it debuted just before the S-class.

To inspire doesn't necessarily mean you were the first. Maserati may have been the first to have LED tailights, but when fancy lights started appearing on vehicles, I don't think it was Maserati they were "inspired" by.

There will be some here happy that there is now evidence that BMW indeed are launching the 5er Touring in 530e PHEV specification as will the forthcoming 3er G21 Touring also be with 330e PHEV option.
Fleets and customers rejoice. This is big news.

Significantly stronger than before, the BMW M550i celebrates its official comeback in 2019: The 530 hp V8 twin-turbo, which we already know from a few other model series, now also comes in the 5 Series G30. As announced by us over half a year ago storms the M Performance 5 now with 68 additional horsepower from the WLTP break, the 465-hp M550i had injected a several months of supply disruption in Europe due to the lack of gasoline particulate filter.

With the increase in output to 530 hp, the new BMW M550i on paper even outshines the M5 of the E60 generation. Its V10 naturally aspirated engine was once by far the strongest engine in the 5 Series, but now it can not keep up with the second-strongest G30 in terms of power and torque, nor does it offer the usual performance.

When accelerating from a standstill, the BMW M550i xDrive continues to benefit from the traction of its four-wheel drive. The factory for the sprint from 0 to 100 keep the Munich currently for themselves, but the time is due to the increase in performance is expected to lower to four seconds. The top speed will be electronically limited to 250 km / h. Whether with the engine change also an update for the chassis is connected, does not emerge from the brief message.

It’s in a class of its own nothing from Audi or MB to compete the S6 and E53 are significantly less powerful I’m glad BMW are sticking to the V8.

There's rumour of the M550i coming out in RHD for the UK market. Let's hope there's some truth to that because if that's the case, maybe we'll get the variant down-under. Not holding my breath though. One year of ownership down and I just had the 540i MPPSK fitted. It's really given the car that extra bit of performance character it lacked. The mid-life crisis is coming along quite nicely now thank you very much 'M'

Couldn't agree more. This 5 is deeply disappointing. Not only has it dated quickly, it was never modern even when launched, and its newer siblings have accelerated the feeling.

Although I have to say, this updated M550i with 530hp is a real sleeper of note. It will be a hell of a bargain second hand.

With the wonders they've performed on the 7, I'm sure they'll manage to rehabilitate the 5.
