5 Series (G30) [Official] BMW 5-Series (G30)

The BMW G30 is the seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series. Body styles: (G30) (sedan), (G31) (wagon), (G38) (LWB sedan). Predecessor: 5 Series (F10). Successor: 5 Series (G60). Production: 2016-2023.
The good:
  • Rear wheel steering and electromechanical anti-roll bars. The handling of the car will be VERY interesting.
  • The hockey stick is implied rather than literal. It's a gorgeous optical illusion of forward motion.
  • Boot lid is big and rectangular, making the tiny one on the Jaguar XF look silly.
  • Remote key is optional - common sense has prevailed.

The bad:
  • The driver assistants are too many and doesn't make it clear to what degree the car can drive itself.
  • BMW didn't surprise on the interior, the center console layout and buttons are near identical to the F20 and F30, with material upgrade being the difference. It walks the thin line between safe and boring.

This is the most evolutionary 5-series in a long time. It's not a showstopper that usher us into a new era for BMW like the E60 did, but all the updates beneath the skin will make it a much better car than the F10. It will be as cushy on the motorway as it will be fun on mountain roads.

Some call it driver assist technolgy, I call it dumb-it-down technology.
Dumb dumber dumbest: gum gum dumb dumb.
Yes feel free to call me a luddite.

Loving it more and more. 5-series continues as my favourite bimmer.

Will the 520d have similar pipes as the 530d? Guess so?

The German government just labelled Tesla's autopilot a traffic hazard, wouldn't surprise me if BMW were intentionally avoiding saying the car can completely drive itself at all.

I'm quite surprised how well the double shoulderline is received in here. Sculptured surfaces are a weak spot of mine, and the G30 is imo an innovative example of what sophisticated surfaces can do. However, I'm still a little disappointed. Obviously, I knew an earlier approach that did not make it into production. See the pics to get my point: in these sketches, the point where the surface changes from concave to convex is somewhere in the backdoor (i.e. at the edge between front- and backdoor, it's still concave). In the series production car, the twist is located somewhere in the frontdoor (which under some lighting conditions gives the silhouette a slightly "wrung-out" feel). Probably, the solution in the sketches made broad rear wheelarches too difficult or too vulgar, or it was just too difficult to produce ... but I might have found that the more elegant solution.
Very generally, I find the 5er very different from its predecessor and from the G11. Kidneys, headlights, surfaces, silhouette, boot all introduce crucially new elements and are bot just shrunked one class ... what else could be expected?
Hey @Busty . I always appreciate your post. I definitely agree that this approach to the side surfacing would have been neat to see, and in my opinion more VFL like. However, I'm more than satisfied with how it turned out.

I tend to disagree that the g30 is "very different" from its predecessor and the G11. In many ways they are more similar than different. When seeing a comparison of the G11 and G30 front end, the grille and headlights give off a very similar vibe, with the only main difference is the the G11 grille is bigger and its lights kink up slightly.

The rear of the car is barely different from the previous generation. It's also the area I'm having a hard time liking. I think BMW could have offered a slightly thinner solution. Although it's the area that separates its from the G30. And that's only because the f11 rear was a lot different from the previous generation 7er.

The element thar gives this car a fresh feel is the side surfacing including the hockey stick area. I think the side profile is what differentiates it from its predecessor.

It's soooooo boooooooring looking, jesus people give Audi a hard time for the A4 then BMW stumps up with a booring fugly old mans car like this. It's a 5 series, it's supposed to be a dynamic looking sports saloon, the styling department needs to hire some young guys and fire anyone over 40. I don't think Mercedes and Jag have much to worry about with this car in the looks department, and if Audi hits the next A6 out of the park who would want to drive something like this?

It looks like BMW are targeting the retired destist/dr living in Florida crowd, trying to temp them out of there Lexus, Caddy or Lincoln.

LOOOOOOOOL!!!!

If I were responsible for the Jaguar design I would be bracing the toilet right now.

Yupp. It's better to under promise and over deliver than the other way around. I have tried Driving Assistance Plus in the G12 and similar to most system, it's dependent on road markings and the car ahead for guidance. As soon as you have neither, the system fails.

I'm very happy dual pipes are standard - singular looked very underwhelming on the previous gen

Will even the 520d and the Efficiency Dynamics model also have twin pipes?

Don't forget that the 3-Series, despite its sportiness is also a spacious executive saloon, and is a popular choice for those under the age of 40 without children.

LMFAO!

Load of BS.

Believe that the E class even had some of the advertisements pulled because they claimed the car could drive itself.

Are you mad? This is brilliant design. Audi's have zero passion. This car brims BMW heritage! Love it! Extrerior 10/10, interior 8/10. A whole hearted 90% perfection!

I think the "Audi-situation" is different. The B8 was boring to begin with, while the F10 still looks brilliant. To me, it seems like BMW took the winning formula with the F10 and made it sharper in any way possible. Can't say I'm in love with the G30, but it's certainly not boring.
And I'm extremely glad they kept the line that flows through the doorhandles high, it gives the car sort of an upscale look. Oh, and I prefer the F10 M bumper over this one as it looks much cleaner IMO... but other than that; well done BMW.

It looks great in this video!

One thing I noticed now in the interior of the G30 that is different to the 7-series and 3-series is the way the infotainment screen is attached to the dash. The 3-series and 7-series have the screen on a shelf while the 5-series has ugly thick plastic at the back of the screen attaching it to the curved top dash.

I agree that the design is somewhat boring and lacks the upscale swankiness of the W213 but the 5 series and pretty much the entire BMW lineup is known to be the sportier step below version of the Mercedes models and with that said, they are probably trying to play safe with the design and not follow Mercedes swankiness in order to avoid another Bangle generation. One thing for sure I would have loved to see the 5 series have a more of an identity of its own.

I think this 5 looks magnificent. At the same time, I can also relate to people that say this seems like a lazy design.

It will be interesting to see how this design will hold up in a couple of years (especially the interior). As to why anyone would buy a 7 over this is beyond me.
