oh gesture control is a pain after the drive we sat in the car talking and every time we moved out hands the volume shot..
I got to try it on a 730d last year, and even though I was fascinated with the idea when the 7er was just released, I ended up being quite disappointed on how premature of an implementation it was...Took forever for it to take any commands. Perhaps in time it will get better and more refined, as was the case with the iDrive, but I have to say, the technology looks like a mere gimmick at this moment, and a prematurely-implemented one at that

Ha ha i even wonder if i should go their i may get killed on the internet lol..

Okay seriously this is the SE it had a lot of the options,Gesture control,Wireless Charging,NO HUD,and the interior was black with the aluminum finish.

First i sat in the car for about ten minutes as sales guy was busy and he offered i wait in the car or have coffee i opted to spend time in the car so i can check out the doors weight as that seems a hot subject at the moment lol.Anyways doors are lighter the E class i have and feels or sounds less heavy if you get me.The cabin fit had a few two places not aligned the cover which goes over the cup-holders and the part next to it were not aligned i even showed the salesman he said yeah early model sickness lol.Seats i think are a bit broader then my E class and definitely firmer.Nice seats and comfortable on the short ride i had with good support.ohh somebody was complaining in teh E class thread the E class sun visors are thin be careful when you see these they even slimmer and lighter.

I did not get time to play a lot with the I drive as i was driving and then we spent a few minutes in the car and a next drive was scheduled for the next client so i cant really say which is easer to use this or command.I did find the colors and the options were more on the E class two screens.I do like BMW has touch screen although the sales guy said its not used much in day to day driving he said drivers prefer the rotary I drive button.I also like the I drive shows you the latest weather nice little feature. Now before i get attacked my opinion and i state again my opinion teh fit and finish on my E class is better and material quality definitely better in my E class. The 5 interior is nice but i felt it a bit boring just my opinion.

The drive was on my usual road so was good to drive on that so a nice comparison (by the way UK roads are terrible and today the ride in the ride in the 5 confirmed that). The car is smooth and quiet although the diesel engine can be heard but in fairness so does the E 220d.I think the E 220d is slight bit quieter engine. The Gearbox i think they are both excellent transmissions i can not split them.I felt my E class had a better pick up and had more grunt.

The car had 3 modes sport, comfort and adaptive...works same way as Mercedes Mercedes has two extra settings. The 5 feels a lighter car and more nibble around a round about but not a drastic difference in terms of this i think the E class or current E class has come very close to BMW compared to the gaps in previous models but the 5 felt that little bit more nibble.Yeah the guy said it had the option of the steering forgot what its called. In terms of comfort its a comfortable car no doubt but i find it strange that the reviews are saying its more comfortable then the E class will say this clearly no ways at all.also in the poor roads and when you hit bumps you feel it more in the 5 even in the comfort mode it was a bit stiff on bumps or poor surfaces.

These are my slight observations and my thoughts

Overall after driving today i feel more proud of my E class..After reading reviews i was wondering whats happening with Mercedes lol but today i felt proud and happy with the E class .

To end off i will say this its very simple.Very nice car if you like BMW i don't see you moving to MB and vice versa.I do feel the design interior and exterior are going to date very quick just something about the car it looked very bland maybe the colour.

Thanks for your review. I concur with many of your observations.

Saw it this morning on the road. Had to look twice to see if it indeed was the new 5er/G30. I don't know if it was such a good idea to make the exterior design so conservative... It hardly looks like a new genaration.

Must it be a total redesign? Sales will tell.

It is indeed very conservative evolution. More so than the G11.

BMW can afford this because of the convenient life-cycle of the 5er compared to the competition. Even after six years nothing new will come from MB and AUDI (assuming the soon to be released A6 is on the same level), so everything is predictable. But for 7er and 3er the situation is completely different. If they are more conservative, 3 years after their launch the new MB models would overtake them in every aspect (which is usually a fact with the 7er) so they have to be more revolutionary in order to stay in line with the future competition.

All valid points but the jump from E39 to E60 to F10 were pretty big. All were very different from their predecessor. I do recognise that since, times have changed. The A7, CLS and 6 series are great options for those wanting the good bits from the sedans but in a more expressive package.

Thanks for this superb insight, it has sure cleared some doubts I had, even I was thinking what has actually happened to MB, with the way all the car journalists are making it look like. Also why do you think the car press is voicing their negative opinions about the E and boasting on about the 5, which clearly is not the case as you're test drive confirms?

We currently have a G30 and a G11 in our garage. I still cannot understand how these two or G30 and F10 can be mixed up.
Exterior-wise the G30 has a completely different overall appearance than the F10, no matter whether you take front, silhouette, or rear.
With regard to the interior, there is a tremendous difference between G11 and G30 in terms of space, quality, materials, and layout as well. For instance, the G30 is the first BMW with a free-'hanging' instead of a free-'standing' screen. I find that this alone makes for a very different overall appearance.

Looks nothing like a 7er.

I would suggest anyone wanting to have a objective assessment drive both cars I may also be wrong in a few things as I spend more time in the E.

I am very sure of two things some journalists are useless..And secondly I would say each car has its plus and minus at the end of the day depends on what u prefer.

In my case I am very very happy with my E I find it better built with a good margin. And I drove the SE compared to owning a AMG E and the AMG is a smoother and comfier car especially on these poor roads in UK.
Lastly for me safety is very important and I find their are two cars I feel by record and by experience the safest and that is MB and VOLVO it is something I always try to consider.

My dad had two terrible accidents in a w123 and w126 at crazy speeds he walked out of both with not even a scratch.I had a terrible one in 1997 and Mercedes saved me so I do think they are the ultimate in safety and comfort and those two boxes for me are always important also I found the new E is very close to BMW in terms of the response and agility but the 5 is still superior in this department.

Exactly, this is the way it should be because traditionally Mercedes' core strengths have been comfort and build quality whereas BMW has always had the edge on driving fun and dynamic style, therefore I can see sense in your review, and yes I do find it hard to trust car magazines nowadays..
