4 Series (F32) [Official] BMW 4 Series GranCoupe

The first generation of the BMW 4 Series consists of the F32 (coupé version), F33 (convertible version) and F36 (five-door liftback version, marketed as 'Gran Coupé') compact executive cars. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series. Production: July 2013 – September 2020

I am a bit lost as to what are we discussing and what are we fighting about. Please correct me:

1. The shape of the rear end of the 4GC is polarizing opinions. There are people that think it could be executed better and there are people that find the idea of a rear hatchback door on a 4er to be foul. Is there anyone who dislikes the 4GC because it's not different enough from the 3er?

2. The 4GC has raised many negative comments, which is a key point in the fights of the last couple of pages. Why is this enraging? BMW has entered so many niche categories, and as someone said the typical, bread and butter 3er sedan is just one of the many models seating on this platform. What used to be the core of the brand is lost in translation. BMW offers so many different products that it's now very hard to distinguish the brand's core values. There are so many and different products that have me confused.

Personally, I still want a 3er, but now I classify the badge on the hood as a negative selling point. Sure, most BMWs are great to look at and would be a great image enhancer if parked outside your house, but I don't like the fact that you can buy almost anything with a BMW badge on it. The brand doesn't represent me any more.

The 4er GC is quite a good looking car, but the underpinnings are the same as the regular F30, plus it costs a lot more and looks little different. Why is it enraging for people who value a car as a machine and not as a fashion item, to question it?

I agree it's an attractive looking car but just imagine if it really had the side profile similar to the 6GC, this would be even better. I can safely say the 4coupe, 4GC and the 3GT are the most desirable of the range but 4GC is really, a 4GT... i find a lot of similarity between the 3GT and 4GC, bar ride height and the side windows treatment.

By the way i wouldn't really even classify these as niche products, these are just value adding by sloping the roofline more and use a few kg's more of metal and then charge you a premium for it, not really a niche, it's just either a show of wealth or you want better looks. Smart thing to do when they can still milk from the badge. Being a BMW fan, i actually find the 3er 4er line up kinda ridiculous. 6 years ago we only had a sedan, coupe, convertible, touring and a SAV, now it nearly doubled. Imagine explaning this line up to a non-car-enthusiast, that guy will laugh at this. Is this a result of the market or technological advance so it enables manufacturers to build all these different models at low cost. Maybe one day i can tailor my own set of headlights and angle of roofline slope.

Don't forget 3er GT is longer (4,824mm vs 4,638mm), featuring longer wheelbase (2,920mm vs 2,810mm) & thus much more legroom for the rear passengers.

So. 3er GT - despite being shaped similarly to 4er GC - is not only much higher (1,510mm vs 1,389mm), much longer & featuring much longer wheelbase than 4er GT.

Yes, both feature coupeish fastbackish shape - but dimensions wise one is a coupe (4er GC), while the other one is a crossover (3er GT).

Actually the car enthusiasts are much more conservative when it comes to new shapes & crossover types of vehicles. And they have issues with niche crossover / mash-up models, not the non-enthusiasts who are more open to novelties & innovations.

Just check out car enthusiasts forums ... What an uproar when such new models are introduced, when new ("brand unspecific") tech or design etc is introduced ... While most of non-enthusiast just DO NOT care. To them a car is just a car ... not some hot debate topic & issue.

The problem is that most car enthusiast forum members do think all the other people out there also think in a similar way they do. But actually those people don't. Their thinking about cars is much different than ours.

That's why 80% of 1er owners don't really care about RWD drive layout - most of them even think 1er is FWD. Or that's why many still prefer FWD & AWD over RWD. Even some who have been BMW owners for decades. They don't care about FI vs NA engines. They don't care about manual vs automatic much etc etc.

Freudian slip? :D
