3 Series (G20) [Official] BMW 3 Series (G20)

The BMW G20 is the seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series range. Body styles: G20 (sedan), G21 (wagon/touring), G28 BEV (i3), and G28 (long-wheelbase). Predecessor: F30 3 Series. Successor: G50 3 Series. Production: October 2018-2016.
BMW needs to invent chameleon paint option that changes color on demand. It's tough to go through fifty shade of grey with that many color options. G20 looked nice in all colors!

G20 3-Series: What We Learned?

My initial impression on G20 since taking the delivery is positive. As the owner of several 3er generations (M and non-M) since E46 era, G20 did not take long to warm up, it's an instant charm upon seeing it both in exterior and interior. The design language and styling made it stand out in all exterior colors.

Congrats Mii your post made it to the front page of Bimmerpost.

I didn’t not realise that you actually owned the car I thought you were quoting from a magazine due to the amazing time, details and measurements you provided. Congrats on your new purchase. I believe you’re the first GCF member to own the new 3 series . I look forward to reading more of your impressions on the car.

I took my M4 Coupe in to be serviced last weekend, and during that time I had a good look around three examples of the G20, all M Sport. I have to say it's grown on me since I first saw the two models on show at Paris last October. All of these had the black grill which really makes a difference, and without the harsh spotlights of the motorshow combined with thousands of grubby fingers, the interior did look a lot better. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Thank you hovabongZA and all!

As I get more acquainted with it, will share back good, bad or ugly. So far it's one of BMW models that we don't mind staring at it for hours and walk away with a pleasant smile.

Great review of the quality aspects of the new G20 thanks for sharing this, very unusual to read info on a cars panel gap measurements and also the details on the windscreen manufacture also affecting the chipping resistance.

Devil is in the details, if BMW mess up the obvious one, let alone under the hood.

Are you secretly Ferdinand Piech? He is known to take out his creditcard to measure panel gaps :D

A good review of the G20 with your previous 3ers will be hugely appreciated. Suspension, comfort and most importantly handling.

F80 replaced my F30. My comparison is drawing from memory when making the same sharp turns on the same road under dry day condition. G20 holds very well on turns with increased chassis stiffness and retained ride comfort. This experience reflected to eco pro, comfort, sport mode and sort of less rebound and absorbed the pavement unevenness.

Between F30 and G20, similar ride options, Comfort and Sport for damping. This is in conjunction with individual configuration through iDrive with more settings combo among damping, steering, engine, and transmission. G20 felt a tad stiffer in Sport mode on damping, yet still comfortable ride. Part of it was coming from the slight longer wheelbase and higher torsional rigidity in overall reduction in body frame flex, part of it was coming from optimized damping technology that varies damping forces as wheels travel.

G20 Driving Dynamics Configuration: (software v11/2018.75)

Sport:
- Damping (Sport / Comfort)
- Steering (Sport / Comfort)
- Engine (Sport / Comfort)
- Transmission (Sport / Comfort)
Comfort:
- Balanced setting
Eco Pro:
- Damping (Sport / Comfort)
- Steering (Sport / Comfort)
Adaptive:
- Predictive adjustment of vehicle setting for driving situation

For cross reference:

E46 - 18,000 Nm/deg
E90 - 22,500 Nm/deg
F30 - 29,300 Nm/deg
G20 - 36,625 Nm/deg (based on 25% more than predecessor)

E46 M3 GTR (w/roll cage) - 46,000 Nm/deg
F80 M3 - 40,000 Nm/deg

G20 is approaching F80 M3 stiffness overall, and even higher in body stiffness in certain area if 50% is applied.

I appreciate the details you put in your posts. Thank you for the reply. The G20 looks like a good upgrade to the F30.

Do you still have your F80 or did the G20 replace it?

Still got F80.

BMW is really staging up on this gen and likely watching all enthusiasts forums closely. I used to bash BMW on the shining 80s' VCR plastic console around the shift lever area during the pre-prod phase, then BMW replaced it with non-reflective material on the production version. If we referred back to early press release interior photos, notice those 5 silver A/C controls buttons in between A/C outlet came out uneven and misaligned. Though BMW took care of that during the actual production with better parts, that's also a plus.

I'd recommend to take a test drive and see for yourself.

Funny how people think BMW spends time on forums. They are more reactive than proactive when it comes to leaks and such....These are simply unplanned leaks, that's all

Awesome detail. You are giving me a strong urge to drive the car but I won't as I fear that I will like it which wouldn't be great as we need the 2nd car in the family to be an easy to park hatchback.
