1 Series [Official] BMW 1-series M Coupe

The BMW 1 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2004. Positioned as the entry-level model in BMW range of products, the first generation was produced in hatchback, coupé and convertible body styles.
I was at the BMW Spartanburg factory on Performance Center track driving the 1M; slalom and going through the cones at almost 60 mph I hear myself screaming yeeehaaa! That's the fun and magic when you are behind the wheel of a 1M.

Akrapovic exhaust. The only thing separating the 1M from perfection.

:D

Hey Andre, where you man?

We're dying to hear more about your ownership and driving experiences with the 1M.

I really didn't know how to feel about the 1M. Sometimes I'm fond of it, other times I'm cold towards it, and other times I'm just downright ambivalent. But after seeing Andre's run with it and Clarkson thrashing that thing about the track, count me as a staunch believer in the 1M. Usually I'm not too quick to side with Clarkson because he seems like a whiny malcontent ponce, but he does have a point regarding how much automakers spend so much time trying to shave of a hundredth of a second yet, in the process, compromise fun. The vast majority don't really care about that hundredth of second, unless they are actually racing or trying to over-compensate among his buddies. But I reckon the vast majority like to have fun.

Side-note: something so awesome seeing a station wagon, especially one with diesel engine, going sideways on a racetrack. The 535d Touring M-sport in that color looks like the tits. It's one of the best "jack of all trades" car out there. Shame the Touring doesn't come State-side, instead we get the stink-bug 5GT.

Lol i have been to long away from here.

I am real real real happy with my 1M. The car is a real entertainer. It s such a joy to drive. Yes it s turbo i know. Yes i know the engine is an AG engine. But it all works so nice together with the chassis and rwd with LSD.

I was on track few days ago. I had so much fun driving i forgot to look how much fuel i had left. LOL. The car went into limp mode because there was almost no fuel anymore. So i restarted the car and full tank and off we go again.

If you can effort a 1M buy one. It s just incredible. Best fun bmw ///M since the E46 M3.

BMW 1M: Detractors .. meet Believers.

Andre was THE most vocal detractor of M Division, and now he's thoroughly impressed with the after-thought/parts-bin 1M. "Real real real" really speaks volumes!

Thanks for sharing your experience Andre. Have you made any modifications to your 1M to make it more track capable (suspension, brakes, tyres)? How do the brakes hold up after a few laps around the ring?

yes i never thought a parts bin car good give such a joy. I was really really disappointed at bmw ///M for not making a car which is small and nimble and for driving enthusiasts. All we saw were trucks and very heavy M cars.

But with the 1M bmw M has found a very good route again.

I changed the seats to recaro SPG XL
Brake fluid is Castrol SRF and PADS are PFC 06
JRZ Trackday suspension.
Alcantara BMW M Performance steeringwheel.

All kind of different wheels.

Styling 270 8x18 for winter tires and used for drifting.
Original wheels i use for a wet track day and road.
9.5x18 with semi slicks for dry track day.

One thing i wil change in Januar. Thats a down pipe with race kats and a middle section with no kat only a resonator. Rear exhaust i keep original.

Advevo, I seams that BMW M still got this car right. I did not drive it, nor will I ever reach your driving skills, though I wishfully hope to, but I am still not really convinced by this car, I mean I do not feel anything for it. Sure It would be fun, but for someow I lost my love for it since reveal. I would rather prefere it stripped down, with CF parts and the NA 2.0l I4 of the 320si E90.

In fact, I am getting a Toyota FT-86/Subaru BRZ. There are faster cars at BMW, but theoretically none should be as fun as it. Just think of it: ~1200 kg, NA 2.0l H4, 200 PS, 7400 RPM, 6MT, RWD, LSD. Center of gravity is 1 inch lower than Cayman.

You should test drive one and then make an opinion. It s awesome.

Of course the lighter the car the better. But a light car with no hp is for me no fun either. I like to steer the car with throttle and back end steps out. But you need hp for that. The 1M base is good. You can easily get weight out yourself. I have put in 2 recaro race seats. 50kg gone. You can get a 1M under 1400kg with some changes.

Yes you are right about the HP thing. I hate it when some think that if the car is lighter it doesn't need more power. The lighter and the more powerfull the better. But well, I think I'll pass the 1 Series M. I am now to buy the Toyota/Subaru and I look forward to the next M3/M4 or M2.

Tat sound is just unreal, i never would ave tout a turbo enine sounds this good.

Oh my oath! That Akrapovic Evolution exhaust... 1M perfected. :icondrool
