Ghibli [Official] 2014 Maserati Ghibli

The Maserati Ghibli (Tipo M157) is an executive car produced by Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati. The car was unveiled to the public at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show.
Maserati's First Ever Diesel Engine Co-Developed with Ferrari, Built in Maranello

As most of you already know, the recently unveiled 2014 Maserati Ghibli will be available with a diesel engine, the first such unit ever fitted to a car wearing the trident badge.

While the carmaker said the engine will be a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, it didn't go into details, leaving room for speculation about the source of the powerplant. Fiat and Chrysler already have a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine supplied by VM Motori that equips the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Lancia Thema and may soon be fitted to the U.S.-market Chrysler 300 as well.

However, for Maserati the VM Motori engine may not be refined enough, if we are to believe a report quoting the automaker’s CEO, Harald Wester. He told Australia's Drive both the V6 petrol and V6 diesel engines “have been co-developed between the Ferrari and Maserati teams,” adding that both have been produced in Maranello.

A diesel made in Maranello? Is that possible? Well, Wester says the new oil burner shares technologies with the gasoline engine, such as direct injection and turbocharging, so Ferrari was a natural choice to lead the development of the brand's first diesel unit.

“Despite the principal differences in combustion between diesel and petrol many of the technologies are very similar,” Wester said. The new 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine will debut in the Ghibli sport sedan, on which it is expected to deliver an average fuel consumption of about 6 liters/100 km (39.2 US mpg).

Later on, the same unit will be mounted on the upcoming Levante SUV and could find its way to Maserati’s flagship sedan, the Quattroporte, as well.

What is not clear is whether the Ferrari-developed diesel engine was built from scratch in Maranello or using the VM Motori unit as starting point.

As for Ferrari, a diesel engine is out of the question, as the brand has said in the past it is not interested in oil burners, sticking to its traditional V8 and V12 gasoline engines.

Since this will likely be priced within reason I will check this out just for kicks when they arrive at the dealer here. Maybe this is what Maser has to do to say alive. This should be well under 100K and should sell in good numbers for them I guess.

70K I heard. There should be the GTS version coming too, with the V8 Buturbo.

Revisited the thread after Chris Harris tweeted about its good looks.

I really want to like this car. The idea of an 'Italian' sedan meant to be a driver's car in the 5er space sounds really appealing. I don't have any doubts it will satisfy dynamically, but so far the exterior and interior have been disappointing. The hood shutlines are almost as bad as the FL E's shutlines. What murders the car just has to be the rear end, though. Chrome insert too small, lip looks awkward, generic taillamps, bulbous center. Sigh.

I have a hard time believing that the Maser GT is related to this. I wish they'd just tweak the shape and size of the Maser GT and call it a day.

Might be a little lower in terms of materials, but I like it.

Maybe just a tad bit too much IMO. Lacks in the small details e.g. the Headlamp/Light Switch looks like the FIAT Panda's.

Unfortunately Ferrari suffers with the same in the switches dept. Then again FIAT has a huge parts bin and give Sergio Marchionne a break, the financials for the group is not all sunshine and roses.:(

Well the upside: You can always opt for the entry level bargain one! :D

The interior is a big step forward from previous Maserati's. But the materials still seem to be a notch or two below that of the Mercedes E Class, the BMW 5 Series, and the Audi A5,6,7.

I want to like it but the signs "cheap" "fiat" "korea" are las vegas like blinking.

The exterior looks really aggressive and uniquely Maserati, the interior might be made from quality materials but the design do not belong to a car at this price range.

The interior, well...uh it looks like a you know what. That exterior however is a winner. Going to bring some much needed contrast and beauty to the segment.

Oh shite, I'm really liking this car, minus the interior. That exterior is hot!!
