Mercedes-Benz GLK (spy photos & info)

Re: NEW GLK Spy Photos

McCALL, Idaho -- Mercedes-Benz USA officially confirmed that its new compact SUV will be named the GLK class, with a European launch late next year and a U.S. launch in early 2009.

The name GLK suggests a smaller version of the full-sized GL-class SUV, but the resemblance is limited to the new model's relatively squared-off exterior. A disguised prototype shown at a press event here Tuesday, Aug. 7, was much lower and shorter than the GL.

The exterior of the prototype GLK was covered with heavy black cladding and what looked like black electrical tape.

But Mercedes provided a clear look at the interior. It included white leather seats with black piping, black wood trim, the Mercedes COMAND-Plus single-knob controller for many electronically controlled functions, and a screen in the dash for a navigation system.

Like the M class and unlike the GL class, there are only two rows of seats.

The prototype probably depicts a top trim level with lots of options, which is how Mercedes imports most models for the United States. The GLK will be built in Germany -- unlike the M class or GL class, which are built in Alabama.

The GLK prototype had an upright and aggressive front grille and a relatively upright windshield with a squared-off rear end. Geoff Day, Mercedes' director of communications and experiences, said the GLK will be positioned as a compact SUV, as opposed to a crossover.

Mercedes officials would not confirm any details on pricing or engines. The GLK probably will start below $40,000 and well below the M class, which starts at $44,425 including shipping.

Dave Larsen, product manager for the M class and the upcoming GLK, said likely competitors will include the BMW X3, the Acura RDX, the Land Rover LR2, the upcoming Volvo XC60 and the Volkswagen Tiguan, plus new entries from Lexus and Infiniti.

The X3 starts at $38,775 including shipping.

The GLK class will likely make its public debut in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Of course I'll be in Detroit to see it first! I fully expect this model to have better build and material quality than the current ML, which makes me think the ML will get a facelift for 2009 before the 2010 GLK arrives.

GLK63 anyone? I don't think they'll do it, who knows...

As for the vid^? Amazing, the CLK has virtually no visible body roll. Now for less camo.

The car is going to be a large volume seller. I'd be surprised if MB won't milk this cow by launching an GLK63.

MB fans gonna love it for sure. Audi fans gonna vommit. BMW fans, well... what the hell, they don't care :D

I think the top part is a little bit X5-sh. To me its fine, except for the center vents. and the center console black plastic looks cheap, like the new C-Class. Am amazed how some of the details are really well put, but they kept that cheap looking black plastic.

I think they could've done much better than this.

why can't all entry level Mercs have CL class interiors ? ...maybe not in quality due to price differentials, but at least in design..It will certainly be more acceptable and sell more. Just don't like this interior. It looks too cheap and plasticky...

one cant comment on the plastic look..on a shot like that so ile wait..
from the c class i KNOW that the materialls are good quality.. they might not look that in all shots..but they are..

other than that.. goddamn MB is really bringing back the old times..
i like it..

PS
Why more wood in the GLK than the C?? arent they the same level..just diffrent type of cars...

Wow I really like that interior!! Why doesn't the C have the same???:t-hands:
Much more classy with that wood (color combo not that good however:D)

It has what in my opinion the C should have, a little (a lot!) more wood. I am not the only one who thinks so... Maybe a "wood kit" will be available as an option? :eusa_pray Wood above the glovebox for instance would be cool...

The C interior is good, classy, but a bit spartan. It is better... A bit too much with that kind of wood, I would say, should be a more discreet colour :D.

Impressive. Good job.:usa7uh:

Oh well, Maserati, all cars have black plastic on the console in that category. And on the C it is really a good quality, feeling and look once you are inside.

Looks like the Classic version (smaller rectangular LCD screen inside speedo, only basic buttons on the steering wheel, fixed (non-flipping) screen on the middle console).

OMG that interior is hot!!! Look at all the amount of wood. Can't wait to see it with aluminum panels or black piano wood. Now that is proper Benz interior, totally my style. This makes the C-class interior look really boring, why Mercedes?

Remember that these are just paparazzi shots, we have seen them before. The interior always look better in the official shots and in real life.

The interior ...

That fabulous interior + the well designed exterior below and people will eat this car up like it's the CLS. I don't like the design of the ML at all and hope it will suffer when the GLK is launched.
