World Debut of the BMW i8 Spyder and New 2019 BMW i8 Coupe

I think the sales volume for this car will be exceptionally low. It might even be more rare than the LaFerrari Alperta.

BMW missed the chance to limit the production run of the i8 to smth like 4000 from the beginning, before the enthusiasm expired. In that way it would made it legendary instead of the humiliation it suffers now.

Surely this car takes the cake for being the most useless car on the decade.

................and I was a fan of the original i8.

Surely this car takes the cake for being the most useless car on the decade.

Any vehicle, car etc that successfully performs its essential function - transporting you from point A to point B - is NOT useless. Period. Regarding it's shape, size, performance, consumption etc. Perhaps some cars are not optimal but useless they aren't! :)

BMW promised it was going to be a game-changing high performance sports car when it was launched. The tinny three-cylinder engine is underwhelming to say the least and its electric module is nothing ground breaking, even when it was launched. Its straight-line performance is mediocre at best and was just on par with the bottom-rung 911 Carrera (its handling is nowhere near that of a 911).

The carbon structure didn't bring that much weight-saving and not scalable game-changer that would put BMW at the very top of composite technology.

The only good things of the i8 remain it's styling and bespoke interior.

You're clearly a glass half empty kinda guy.

I'd accept underwhelming in some respects, but "most useless car of the decade" is simply hyperbole for the sake of it if all you're basing it that statement on is it not being as good as a 911. The carbon structure also allows it to be around the same weight, or lighter than some of the competition, and again, if you regard it as "useless" because it doesn't put BMW "at the very top" of composite technology, then again, I'd say that's just hyberbole.. it suggests that only one company using CFRP can ever not be useless.

.. I mean, they could have made it EV only, charged a million dollars for it, and hardly sold any, let it weigh 300kg MORE and made it less than a second quicker.... but hey, why would they want to step on Audi's toes :ROFLMAO:

And that's what it is. It's not a supercar ... It has never been promised to be one. But game-changing (PHEV with CF body) high-performance (on the level of eg M cars) sports car (it's a 2+2 GT coupe).

Some expected from i8 to be a supercar but that had never been BMW's plan. Misinterpretation? Miscommunication?

Sometimes media & journalists expect something from a certain product that's not in line with customers' expectations & needs. Criteria "journalists" use for judging & reviewing a certain vehicle are very biased & usually based on PERSONAL expectations & neeeds & preferences of the reviewer.
