i8 Leaked? BMW i8 Spyder

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by BMW. The i8 was part of BMW's electrified fleet and was marketed under the BMW i sub-brand. The production version of the BMW i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and was released in Germany in June 2014. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. began in August 2014. A roadster variant was launched in May 2018. Production ended in June 2020.
Anyone of you guys got maybe also bored of the design? It’s with us since 2009. After years of teasing, concepts, placing it in movies and ads as concepts of concepts yet another concept with top, without top, with glass doors, without them, in bloody red finish, matte or art paint, now a production ready roadster seems pretty late in game where a successor is needed, fully electric where the technology is ready to start something serious.

This generation of i8 was designed & engineered to be a PHEV.

And it will stay PHEV till the very end of its life-cycle. The next generation will be fully electric though. Just like all the other BMW i model (incl. i variants of core BMW models ... e.g. iX3 etc).

I like to think of the i8 and the i3 for that matter as an experiment. Everything here was developed from the ground up using ground breaking materials and an entire new philosophy based on the inevitable question what if?

Granted it's not the ideal solution expected. The i8S will somewhat rectify this later. But it showed in an era of inevitable emission legislation that the sports car can have a future.

You can't innovate without breaking conventional norms and pushing boundaries of manufacturing. BMWi is not just about the cars but manufacturing, innovation and of course services to assist the cars. You would be surprised how these services actually enhance the BMWi bottom line.
Had BMWi been a monumental failure?
We would not have seen the Vision iDynamics.

Which is not the iNext. But the next logical choice for BMWi.

Where I live the super nouveau riche covet these i8s - driving with the doors up in traffic, loud music, digusting wraps, etc. I saw the same thing in London. I guess this is what happens when the lease rates are so low relative to the full asking price.

In the UK the i8 is offered at 0% APR with a 20% discount. Sales are clearly struggling and the Spyder is likely to become one one of the 10 cars clocking least number of registrations.

Having driven it around England, I found it effortless and easy for carving through country roads and fast A roads. It's a cool car to rent rent or lease but to buy, there are more practical GTs, faster electric cars and more exhilarating sports cars.

There's about 1700 of the coupe on our roads I think, only ~200 sold in 2017 though. They might be working quite hard to get rid of them, but if you compare it to something like a single generation of the R8 V10 they've done pretty well so far given how fast the technology is evolving.

Alexander Kotouc revealed that some customers have been asking for a quicker i8, and that the company is still very much considering it.

‘There is customer demand for a more powerful version’ said Kotouc, but added that ‘it needs to make sense for the brand’. ‘You could put a V12 in there and it would be incredibly powerful but would it still be a BMW i car?’ he explained, saying the company would need to find the right balance.

I always wonder why they label it as a Supercar? When it actually is to use its name a progressive sports car.

Please, that manages to be even less convincing than "Sports Activity Coupé". Ahh, BMW marketing.

BMW i3 and i8 might not be replaced

“We're still deciding [about] the i8,” said i boss Robert Irlinger. “We see a market for new kinds of sports cars. Whatever it’s called, or if it’s a new kind of sports car, is still in discussion.”

Marketing people use the word "progressive" the same way chefs use pepper. When your product sucks, you need something bold to mask your incompetency so that the customer doesn't shove your product up your @#$.

:D

What a wasted potential. They could have and should have offered one with a turbo straight 6 +batteries. Yes it looks interesting, but I feel bad for those that spend money on a 3 cylinder attached to a few laptop batteries.
