Earlier today I had a rendezvous with the G42 in its M240i and 220d formats at an undisclosed location opposite the BMW Museum.
The M240i was showcased in its launch colour Thundernight which under spotlighting and direct sunlight really sparkled. However natural light on a cloudy day will lose this effect. The sparkles effect gives off a petrol like array of colour when put into a pool of water.
If G22 was the teenager. G42 is the growth into adulthood. The “comet line” of G22 added some three dimensional depth to the surfaces of the body here it’s not about adding more or less subtracting but letting the design be far more organic. The surfaces broaden the hips and the shoulders it’s more organic body mass natural developed. It really widens the car and it’s gives it an angry bulldog stance.
it’s lines are crisper but the broader areas have to been seen as the depth they provide makes the car far from flat. They blister the front and rear quarters effectively that it makes the comet line very dated.
The front end will be equally debated due to its headlight units especially the shape with stacked coronas squircle. The grille is wider and more subtle rather than the FU grille in the 4. Although I think that this car would benefit more from the longer in length grille to add some 02 nostalgia.
The front and rear blisters certainly hark to the M3 E30 and it’s more favourite area in its profile.
it seems far more adult than youthful.
My personal opinion is that it looks like a mini-E31 8er. It’s long body and then sloping gradient
To the front fascia reminds me of that cars overhang
The classic nostalgia appearance continues as it has the classic bathtub line running the length of the car. It allows a more upright coupe like form split on the top depending on whether you prefer the previous incarnations which were more dynamic?
The G42 follows the more Aerodynamic form of the current 1er in how it’s front aerodynamics are very three dimensional. They are honed and formed with the body rather than relying on plastic detailing to surround an intake as per 2er Gran Coupe which shares absolutely no kinship with the G42.
This M Performance model carries M Performance trademark of Cerium Grey with adds an almost Matt finish to the detailing. It’s less sparse on the G42 having it subtle surrounding rather than being an overbearing detail again like the M235i GC.
As something new the car will be offered M Aerodynamic Mirror units. M Performance accessories will also be offered.
The interior is especially familiar however quality over G22 is much, much better using the more quality switchgear from the latest models. Dash materials are more expensive and of a higher application of finish compared to the F22 and its brittle looking hard plastics. Even the door cards are finished in higher quality plastics compared to the easily scratched and scuffed panels of the F22. The finish is less sparse with additional leather than just a small pads worth.
it has clever genetics conceived of three existing models. The Z4 and current CLAR cluster found under current models but also a section strategically utilised from the 8 within the rear bulkhead in the passenger compartment.
Space is not good for adults in the rear unless you are a contortionist. But then again in sc. compact coupe you would be driving rather than being the passenger.
Some points to note: There is a classic C-Pillar Hoff-Kink. The Gran Coupe sticks out even further whether if you think a good thing or not all they share in general is a name.
However the outline would have made an exciting looking 4dr GC model.
No Cabrio but you question why as the car would look impressive as a Cabrio with those blisters having not to support an additional roofline.
The Cabrio if by running your hand along the upper section would have given a flat surface again like a bathtub. And very meticulous of BMWs engineering and design collaboration.
Still using previous incarnation of iDrive 7 but iDrive 8 will be introduced later using the twin free standing curved screen. The i4 with its shelf like surface to allow the free standing screen will be shared across many models once iDrive 8 is integrated.
