Is this the iPhone 5? UPDATE: Apple introduces iPhone 4S

15 minutes left in the event. If only 4S today, Apple disappointed and this iPhone 5 saga was just a three-month delay.

For all of you hating on the lack of an iPhone 5 I am with you. However, if there ends up being no iPhone 5 today, that assistant feature is pretty damn cool. Unrivaled in the industry. Will keep Google busy trying to program something like that.

English, French and German for now (all these still in Beta). More languages to come.

If Apple are not gonna show a new iPhone with new design etc., I'm afraid they will loose a lot of customers. It's been too long, they should've worked out something entirely new IMO. An iPhone 4 with new functions - although it's cool - it's really not too exciting.

these voice control things don't usually work too well, so doesn't really excite me, and what about the "China" strategy while this assistant thing don't even have Chinese support.

its apple, if it didn't work they wouldn't do it

The voice control did not work well, correct. The assistant that Apple released today will.

The chinese market is simply to get the iPhone 4 over there in large quantities.

So basically they held off launching a new iPhone this summer to then bore us with an iPhone 4S featuring the same internals as the iPad 2. Well I've got the iPad 2 and had not planned on buying the iPhone 5 ow whatever so I'm not that bummed. Pass me iOS5 please=)

I am pretty sure the plan all along was to have an iPhone 4 spec bumped and introduced. The delay more than likely came form iCloud, ios5 and the assistant feature they just added. In addition, the expansion to China should keep Apple really warm at night.

The iPhone 5 is in the works and the cases we saw that were purchased recently by certain vendors relates to a particular prototype that Apple is working on. While many think that Apple should have released an iPhone 5 today--present company included--I don't think it would have been possible at all. They would have had to have designed it and implemented it in the factories. This is very costly for them, at least right now. Taking into consideration the current iPhone 4 is not a bad phone, they continued with that current designed and simply improved the internals. Also, the ram on the iPhone 4s is estimated to be 1gb which is more than the current iPad 2.

Ultimately, people interested in a new apple phone will be upset for now but the iPhone 4s from a business standpoint should suffice Apple and its investors for the time being.

One more thing: I have been saying this over and over in this thread, while we all hoped for a new redesigned phone, there was no evidence whatsoever that there would be one aside for the cases that were shown. People have to realize that Apple has set the standard pretty high. For example, they have introduced a retina display on the iPhone 4. I think that if they are going to increase the screen size on the next iPhone they will probably want to stick with a retina display on that screen as well making it 330 DPI. There are certain things that Apple wants to do right and if they are going to do it they are going to take their time. When the iPad 2 was released so many were pissed that it did not have a retina display. That is just not possible at least not in a year to make. Such screens with high resolutions are costly.

hmmm, it is between 4S (I have an old ass 3S now) and Kindle fire for my gadget fix for this winter. If it was the 5, would have made my decision much easier.

Apple's strategy has rarely been about drawing first blood on features or functionality. Siri is no different, sometime ago Apple acquired a company called Siri, specialising in voice control. I agree. Most voice control are poop and never work as advertised. What makes Siri different is that it's not your phone you're walking to, but clusters of servers that analyse what you're saying and get back to you with an answer. Hence the reason why data connection is a requirement for Siri to work. Most voice control systems are dumb and static. Siri is dynamic and evolves with your usage and will probably only get better the more people use it. It's intelligent, like many of the systems governments use to study us through cameras and microphones randomly scattered around public high risk places.
