Is this the iPhone 5? UPDATE: Apple introduces iPhone 4S

Wow, gotta love the generalisation. It just sounds like you're a frustrated Apple fanboy who's peeved off at Android and Samsung for eating into Apple's dominance and continue to do so at an alarming rate (HTC and the rest haven't done much to contribute to Android's success). You've hit the nail on the head. Why the hell should I pay for apps. Long live free apps:D.

Seriously though, before I bought my Galaxy I did some research. I checked out a few phones, namely BB Torch, Iphone and Galaxy. The BB was just dinosaur tech with free internet which was a no. Iphone was way too safe, plus I had to pay for apps, why? The Galaxy as a phone was superior, better screen better ergonomics and faster tech and it had Android. The only adv the Iphone had was better typing. Now let me tell you why I chose Android.

It's freaking awsome, the possibilties are endless and the App market is amazing. I can't tell it to you any other way unfortunately. You have to realise that there are millions of other people like myself and the numbers are growing everyday. Sure Apple sell more phones, but to me Apple's are nothing more than a fashion statement cos there are more superior products that can do it better. And no I'm not a 17 year old geek who's taking apart apps like you said. I just love technology and Apple is not it.

One more point. What do you think is gonna happen if Apple loses their case. Apple's strategy was to target manufacturers to try and desuade them from using Android in future, yet Samsung has already committed itself to Android for their future products. I hope Apple have deep pockets.:)

braaf please do not attempt to characterize someone as a fanboy simply because they are stating an opinion or a set of facts about something. Let us all continue to have a good and mature conversation here over something we are like. We are here for a reason.

I do not think anyone is saying that Android is not a good platform. There are just limitations with the operating system and there is a lot more that goes into all of this.

Yet, they do not advertise the fact that one needs to be within a WiFi network for FaceTime to work. That is as bad as needing a PC to sync up. Apple needs to learn some lessons fast from others.

Yes they do, it may not be done in the commercial but they do it very clearly on their website. Furthermore, you mentioned in another post something about tethering? It wasn't apple that was reluctant to do it, if I am not mistaken, but instead apple had to discuss the option with AT&T first in order to get it on the phone.

Going back to what Luw said, Apple is still making loads of money AFTER people have bought their phones. Something which none of the Android handset manufactures are.

I am using a Samsung galaxy as well right now. The hardware is better in leaps and bounds in comparison to my old 3GS but im not impressed with the quality and refinement of the apps which is why I am looking forward to reverting back to Apple. Especially now with OTA updates, I wont ever have to worry about connecting my phone to my PC for updates.

Here's a fine example of Android phones becoming cheaper with Chinese manufactuers such as Xiaomi and Meizu stepping up their game:

Phone features include a 1.5GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM and 4GB ROM, 4-inch LCD, GPS plus GLONASS, and a generous 1,900mAh battery and an extremely competitive price point of around $300 and its got a DUAL boot OS (MIUI OS + Android OS, how cool is that!?). Those specs blow the trousers off any HTC/LG/Samsung/Motorola android handset available on the market today at less then half the price. Give these emerging Chinese phone manufacturers a few more months to make further developments
and even the big players such as Samsung/HTC/LG are going to find themselves in the hot seat pondering their next move.

Samsung are not 100% committed to Android. Just like for other manufacturers Android is a life Boat for those who failed to developed an OS of their own. Parallel with this Samsung are working on their own Bada OS which is a smart decision. Now that Google have bought Motorola no one knows what is going to happen, will Motorola get preferential treatment? Either way google cannot be trusted and given that Android is a magnet for lawsuits because of unlicensed technology, it is looking more and more like a bad deal.

In the end content is king. Just like with gaming consoles you choose them based on the games they have and will be developed for the, and that is how many people choose their iOS devices. And this is why Apple are earning profits that are unheard of in the consumer electronics Market. Android offer
more features, iOS benefits and benefits are what sell products best.

Free apps are nice but I rather pay 69 pence for a quality app that will bring out the best of my £399 device. Quality not quantity of apps are important. This is where Android is light years behind iOS. The OS is brilliant but the app Market is not.

Woa that's a bit not fair. My comment was in respnose to some one labeling Android users hackers. Are you cool with that? Then surely you can be cool with my response.

As to Android having limitations, the reason why I chose Android was becaause of the non limitations. I checked out the Ipad 2 cos I'm considering a Galaxy Tab. Once again I can only do so much with the Ipad. IOS is only a lot simpler to use than Adroid and I'm not looking for simple. Plus the tech is way better in the Tab.

Look guys this is gonna go on for a while. I, like you wait with baited breath to see what the Iphone 5 will look like, But then early next year the Galaxy 3 makes it appearance as well. So let's see hey.

I realize we won't be able to change your decision, but for the sake of discussion, I'll address your statement anyways ;)

I own an iPad 2, and it really is one of the best pieces of tech I've purchased lately. However, I do think that part of it lies in the fact that its a tablet, so I can't take that away from the Galaxy Tab either. What stands out to me the most in this comparison is the cameras. I do wish that my iPad had a better camera (ones on the Galaxy would be it), but the jealousy stops there.

There are much more HD apps avaliable for the iPad than there are for the Galaxy Tab. To me, the hard product of both devices is negligible. What really matters to me are the Apps and the OS. I have to say, I really love the apps on the iPad. Sure, the more mainstream apps like CNN or Angry Birds will be ported both ways, but there are many apps (like the local ones), that are exclusively for the iPad. I would be hitting myself in the head if I had to wait for an app on Android while it was already out on iOS.

With the operating system, I guess we really have to agree to disagree. Simplicity is a very important part of an OS. I like that I don't have to spend hours customizing my homescreens, because I like the way Apple has done it. I turn on the device, and with the push of a button, I go. I don't spend hours deciding where to put my clock, nor do I spend any time thinking which page I should put my weather app on. For the iPad, its as simple as opening the box.

What I also wish was on the iPad initially, was flash support, but as my ownership of the device lengthens, I'm finding that I need it less and less. The first thing I've realized was WHAT the content flash plays. Sure, there are a lot of things Flash will do to make a website look nicer in its design, but for tablet computing, I prefer the information to be simple and quick. If I want to look at fancy decoration that badly, I'll do it on a laptop. Next, the videos. I think there's a common misconception that all videos outside of the ones on YouTube require flash. In fact, this is not the case. I've found that the videos I watch on other sites (coincidentally?) all do not require flash.

FaceTime on the iPad is also really nice. Yes, the image quality is a dodgy, but its the platform in which one is able to video chat that is the most important. Honestly, if one gave me a Galaxy Tab, I wouldn't know how to video chat with anyone. Do I video chat with people that have a Galaxy Tab, and those people only? What if nobody I know owns one? Do I have to use Skype? This ultimately leads us to the next point, which is that there is quite a large number of people who own iOS devices. A large percentage of my colleagues and family members own some sort of FaceTime enabled device, which really makes it easy to see someone. I can't really say the same about the Galaxy Tab.

But really, this is about the iPhone, though the arguments could are applicable to the mobile phone counterparts, because they're pretty much the same in concept and useablity.

Take a look at this: Digitimes Research: Apple to lead in 2011 smartphone shipments

"Global smartphone shipments for 2011 will reach 462 million units, rising 60% from the 288 million shipped in 2010, according to Digitimes Research. Apple is expected to overtake Nokia as the top ranking vendor in terms of shipment volume in 2011, while Huawei Technologies will enjoy robust growth in shipments enabling the China-based company to close its gap with Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

Apple's smartphone shipments are projected to top 86.4 million units in 2011, up 82% from 47.5 million units in 2010. In contrast, Nokia's smartphone shipments in 2011 will decline to 74.4 million units from over 100 million in 2010, said Luke Lin, analyst for Digitimes Research.

Huawei and ZTE will be two rising stars in the global smartphone market in 2011, Lin indicated. Huawei, in particular, is expected to enjoy an over 400% rise in shipments, Lin added. Both China brands are benefiting from explosive growth in demand for Android devices, close ties with China's local mobile operators as well as competitive prices of their products."

I was at apple store last week & the sales person said that there's a good chance that iphone-5 will come out within a month.

P.S; I'm not an apple guy at all, I was there with my cousin, who's entire family is 'i-ed'. Lol. As for me, Android followed by BB.

If I had to guess, October 21st is the special day for the iPhone 5 or whatever it is.

a 1.5GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM and 4GB ROM, 4-inch LCD, GPS plus GLONASS, and a generous 1,900mAh battery and an extremely competitive price point of around $300 and its got a DUAL boot OS (MIUI OS + Android OS, how cool is that!?).

I really doubt that phone processor to be made by Qualcomm,Nvidia and of course not Samsung's own Exynos chip.I bet that a bench test with that phone and Galaxy S II won't be too bright for the Chinese maker.

The XiaoMi looks to be a very functional, very capable phone. Watch it become the next HTC if it keeps heading in this direction.

It is official! Apple just sent out media invites for the 4th of October.

1dbd77ec440bcba42a9a911163f2f7c7.webp

So, there is some speculation as to what is going on with the icons. The calendar reads Oct the 4th, which is the day the media event will be held. The clock shows 10am, which is the time the media event will be held. The maps icon shows where it will be held (Apple'c Cupertino campus). And, finally, the phone icon shows 1 missed car or notification (depends on iOS 5 I guess).

Now, the last item, the phone, is what people are wondering about. There is 1 there, and it may be telling us that there will only be one phone. Or, it may mean one more thing! I guess we will have to wait and see.

The hype for this product has been way overdone due to its delay, and I do not think it is all beneficial to Apple. The company has not sent a good signal to the markets with this significant delay and the upset of its regular product roll out, certainly not if it wants the world to believe it is the same as under the active management of Steve Jobs. Now, this new iPhone can only disappoint based on the features that are or aren't yet in it.

I am truly afraid of this. However, one thing that I have noticed is that Apple, at times, has gone out and dispelled rumors that do not make it look good. I have wondered now, for months, why Apple hasn't dispelled the new iPhone 5 rumor, i.e., a totally new design in addition to the 4s which should be much like the current 4. This makes me wonder, with such hype maybe there is a new phone?

Granted, there have been no parts that have been leaked that can be associated with an entirely new phone. We will just have to wait and see. I can say this, however: If Apple does not release a new redesigned phone, like everyone else is expecting, I will truly be disappointed.

Holy crap, if this is not a redesigned phone, and it's just a "iPhone 4 V2", the Stock will plummet on release day, for one.

Kind of odd that speculation is running rampant, as if people are setting dates, and acting as Apple's spokespeople, when, as far as I know, Apple hasn't said ANYTHING about the new iPhone. If you go by them, you wouldn't have any reason to think a new phone is even underway.

Whoops, just saw that they released the date.

Well, my comment stand as true if it were written a few days ago. :D
