iPad 2: New details emerge

What a disappointment. No software upgrades. I assume these are all saved for when the iPhone 5 launches which means that the iPad 2 will get the update in the autumn. So I'll probably pick up the HP TouchPad which has the best polished OS. However it's not coming out until summer so I might have to wait until June and could also take the opportunity to see what the iPhone 5 will offer. But the iPad 2 is the most future proof of the bunch and I'm sure Apple are working on a software update for the iPad which is in desperate need of a UI overhaul.

ios 4.3 is not a software upgrade?:t-hands:

I think the ability to use the iphone as a wi-fi hotspot for the ipad2 using ios 4.3 is quite an important upgrade. It saves me having to buy a 3G ipad and another sim/contract.

It is but not the upgrade many people are waiting for. The iPad has a lacking notification system and is multitasking is quite a pain. All that apple needs to address is those to aspects and I'll hand over cash right away. Knowing Apple well they rarely implement a feature or functionality unless they've got it 100% right, so I would assume they are working hard to improve multi-taking management. A hint of this is the most recent IOS SDK which features multi finger gestures for swiping through opened apps using four fingers or opening the home screen using a five finger gesture.

I've always thought it was weird that Apple didn't implement an Exposé-esque multitask manager for the iPad. It just seems so logical, given the larger screen.

I've been using a simple four-finger downward swipe on my Macbook's trackpad to trigger Exposé for years. Something similar for the iPad would be fantastic.

^^^ You're in for a really nice surprise if you like Exposé on Mac! It's getting a major overhaul in OS X Lion!!

So I'll probably pick up the HP TouchPad which has the best polished OS.

Whahahahahahahahaha! OMG, seriously....L.O.L!!!! Quote of the month!!!

Thanks for the good laugh buddy!

Might want to watch the iPad 2 keynote.
iMovie and Garageband for iPad alone are better than the whole of Android.

Im pretty sure there are some huge software upgrades coming to iOS but they are obviously holding them back for the forthcoming iphone since it is more of a cash cow.

I watched it. You should watch the HP Touchpad keynote. iMovie and Garageband are great additions but don't change the fact that multitasking on iOS is currently paltry at best. double clicking the home button to change app is slow and tiresome. WebOS is currently the best demonstration of multitasking on a portable device. It's perfectly between iOS user friendliness and Honeycombs widget/homescreen overdose. This is why HP bought Palm.

Multitasking came to the iPhone 4 before the iPad which got it in autumn next year. So I suppose the iPhone 5 will pave the way to proper multitasking on the iOS. But yeah, the iPad 2 is a good device but for me the leap in user ability compared with the predecessor has yet to come. But June is a mere 3 months away and then I'll be able to judge the iPad's prospects of serving as my second computer.

You are right about multitasking but I'm not sure you are right about the timeframes. Though, apple does not have true multitasking it is good enough. Either way, apple had introduced the iPad just months before they introduced multitasking. I think they were still working things out. However, since then, apple has seen the importance of the iPad and I doubt they will have different and separate releases of iOS updates for devices. Granted, you may be right about apple introducing a new and improved iOS later with iPhone 5 but I think the releases of said iOS will both be at the same time for iPad and the iPhone.

Apple has changed how they do things. They are moving faster in a market that demanda it. Also, it is true that the iPad has this allure that is untoucheable by other tablets, at least for now

It's survivable. But once they introduce something by the likes of WebOS, which I think they did, netbooks will be die a painful death. I would love to see an expose type of overview or something that would allow for quick and easier toggle between different apps. Steve jobs is a perfectionist and I'm sure his team are working hard to making the iOS multitasking less primitive and when they do it will be perfect.

Hmm, color me bored and unimpressed. 20 minutes of talk for a silly e-mail program? Really? They even dare call something standard like e-mail an 'App'

Garageband is better than HP webOS too it appears... :p
I am going to play the piano on my iPad 2 :D :D

It's a brilliant email app with three panes, allowing you to read and browse different accounts without having to press the back button a million times. I have three accounts on my iPod touch and have it completely maxed out for email and web browsing but sometimes which that productivity would be a bit easier. Either way I'm on the fence with regards to both the TouchPad and iPad. I'm waiting to see what developers HP will bring on board for the tablet and I'm awaiting a UI overhaul for notifications and multitasking on the iPad. Android tablets are not even in consideration. :)

Not so important to me, as I barely use my iPad for surfing only.

So, no need to upgrade then.

I tried the 1st gen iPad and realized I couldn't find much use to it myself. It's too big to be handy and is in many ways technologically inferior to mini-laptops. If it was smaller like, something like 6-7" and didn't lack some features such as SD memory card slot or browser flash support, I'd be more likely to get one.

You should check out this video of the new multi-finger gestures that are currently in beta form. Looks fantastic.
