You beat me to it.. looks like the 4cyl is rather interesting. It’s almost like you have to adapt to a totally new style of driving to get the most out of it.

That said Matt does point out a couple of times how clunky the setup is where the rear doesn’t ‘talk’ with the front that seamlessly. Other than that the integration seems rather decent where user error like missing a gear isn’t completely detrimental.
Naaah. The C63 is still donkey shit.

Drag races are one dimensional. The car gets to deploy all electric boost and combustion power at once. None of the weight, flaws in drivetrain calibration or engine flexibility are exposed like they would through alpine passes or a circuits.

If you own the BMW and are desperate for more power. A cheeky stage 1 tune or remap will unlock 60-75hp for €600 and close the performance gap to The Merc.
 
This comparison was interesting. I thought the M3 would have won the races based on magazine performance tests (from AMS/ABSC etc,), but the new C63 SE really surprised me.

C63 has 170hp extra power, it should be much faster than the M3 but its not.
 
It is 400 kg heavier and the continuous power is not 680 hp. It can deliver full power for 10 seconds. Still, it's a good achievement for a 4-cylinder engine. There is still no 4-cylinder engine in the world that can put out 476 hp.

To be fair: If 1/4 mile runs are your primary usage, then the C63S E might fit the bill :p
But not really - as you correctly mentioned - as the M3s S58 has easy/cheap tuning potential to have the same power as the C63S E ... but it has this Power always and not for mere 10s ... and still weighs like 350kg less.
There are several tests around, which show how bad C63S E accelerates from 0 - 200 ... beyond 200 km/h it is just laughable.
My main usage scenario for such potent sedans/waggons is the German Autobahn ... there you typically (when it isn't crowded and traffic allows for highspeed runs) have repeatedly accelerations from 150 km/h to 250 km/h, where the AMG gets smoked ... and it doesn't seem to be designed for twisty roads through alpine passes either. ;)

And to be honest it’s not the first time they have been massively out of tune with the market needs.

But I just saw a video where they today are the 3rd in the world on profit per units sold after Ferrari who is waaaaaay ahead and Tesla who is just a few 100 euros above in profit per unit.

I feel that they have a conspiracy with their friends down in Munich , they never make great cars both of them at one given moment.

It’s like ok you go ahead and save the brand name now and use the cash flow while we make shit and fill the accounts, we will switch places in about 10 years.

Rest assured though that they will come back with a vengeance and make things right they always do. It’s started already slowly for eg by offering a CLE full fat 63 amg and so on..

But they do need an overhaul at key positions, the first one that is overdue is the design cheif Gordon W. Thank you for some wonderful designs but yeah bye bye.

Canceling the S coupe is not them being out of touch tho. It wasn’t selling. That is the customer fault. Everyone loves and wants XYZ but they aren’t buyer's. Outside of the EQ I don’t think their styling is mediocre. Otherwise i agree totally.

Only the W222, the rest is a copy of that one way or the other. All the way up to 2024 cars. It worked for a while I'll give him that.

As a Mercedes fan I have some serious issues with the brand and product at the moment. But I think GW has sufficient talent and design talent beneath him to recognise their issues and turn things around. They are responsible for some of the best designs from MB in 20 years as well as being responsible for some absolute duds (EQ).

Be careful what you wish for, you could get some seriously terrible head of design. Look at some other brands like Audi. BMW has also had it's own major issues. New is not necessarily better.

Yeah i meant his whole Mercedes career, not the current in production cars only.

W221 and C221 ( the most beautiful modern Mercedes )
SLR
CLS
Insane vision maybach coupes
Etc etc

And yes I know he didn’t pen them all, it’s kind of what cheif designers do.

To me a Mercedes needs to first of be built like a tank, and have a design that reflects that. Not airy feminine designs. Imposing and strong rather,

Yes, it is. With its enormous pressure levels, I believe the M139 can easily handle 525hp or more without the e-motor.

They cancelled too much IMO. A larger more premium coupe than the CLE is really needed and nothing in the range cuts it as an aspirational luxury coupe.

My dad's S will be 3 years old in December. He has a habit of changing cars every 3 years. I took him to MB last week and there is simply nothing for him to consider. Absolutely ZILCH. He'll probably wait for a FLW223 or FL G63, unless this new car under testing with the W223 is something desirable.

It never sold any great numbers in any generation , but they still need to make it. Just cause they can , just cause no one else has the brand name to sell such a thing other than 3 brands

Mercedes has always made cars that never made any economical sense , that’s one of the reasons for their brand name,

What it gave them was “halo” cars for people to aspire towards, and in that journey helped sling a shitload of ABCE classes.

That’s a bmw move to not have the nuts to make something that doesn’t fit the excel spreadsheet of some bean counter monkey.

One of the reasons I hate BMW , the sporty car maker , ultimate driving machine factory .. that don’t make a proper sports car let alone a super car, and god forbid a hyper car. Laying all that talent of their superb engineers to waste.

Just for good measure , f#ck bmw, 🤣🫡

I thought the last gen S coupe sold pretty well for a specialty car. There was a time where I felt they were everywhere. The C215/216 were rarer in their heyday. Although that may be attributed to the dismal sales of the R171 SL and the fact that the C217 for the first time sold as a convertible as well.

Honestly, and this may be a bit controversial but the GLE range with the AMG treatment and the staggered big wheel setup always gives me the fizz. That is quite masculine that is..

Although that may be attributed to the dismal sales of the R171 SL and the fact that the C217 for the first time sold as a convertible as well.

They need to do a 4 door S coupe. Even if the rear seats aren't cavernous and the rear doors are small suicide ones.

Just making it becsuse they can is not how business works lol. I agree tho but I think at this point the money would be better spent elsewhere like fixing some of their other issues.

They make money elsewhere. It’s not like they would go into bankruptcy. Overall such cars probably raise profitability but in a way you can’t put in the spreadsheets.

The bigger picture , look at the bigger almost 150 year picture.

Thats exactly how business works and the only reason why the mercedes SL still exists.

Mercedes boss said so himself in a lengthy interview.

Its about maintaining status.

I personally dont know what im gonna move on to from my current amg gtr unless mercedes go really aggressive with hotter versions of the GT.

Just feel they have outpriced themselves against more powerful and prestigious competitors. Roma and new vantage.
