MC20 From Spied to Official: Maserati MC20 Supercar

The Maserati MC20 (MC being the acronym for Maserati Corse 2020, internal code M240) is a two-seater, rear-mid-engine sports car produced by Italian car manufacturer Maserati. The open top variant of the MC20 called the Cielo made its debut in May 2022.

Maserati MC20 2022 review – is this a Ferrari killer?

The new Maserati MC20 has been worth the wait. It might initially look unremarkable on paper, but this is a brilliant supercar with a personality all its own.

It’s not everyday you get to drive an all-new Maserati supercar, and that’s just part of the mystique that surrounds this famous Italian brand in general, which remains achingly desirable despite its fallow periods over the years. With the MC20, Maserati is descending straight into one of the most competitive of performance car classes, stacked with formidable opponents such as the Honda NSX, Audi R8, Ferrari F8 Tributo and Porsche 911 Turbo, not to mention new arrivals on their way such as the McLaren Artura and Ferrari 296 GTB. Has Maserati done enough to compete head on with those rivals and, at the same time, mark out its own territory?

At first glance the MC20 is thoroughly modern yet nevertheless conventional – the latter perhaps an unfair term to describe a supercar with a full carbon tub and a hugely powerful twin-turbo V6, but these are the ingredients we’ve come to hope for, if not quite expect, in a mid-engined supercar in 2022 – even if many persist with a more conventional aluminium construction. The MC20 is a two-seat, relatively practical machine, with aerodynamics largely generated underneath the car, double wishbone suspension and adaptive damping all-round, and an eight-speed twin-clutch gearbox. Maserati quotes the weight figure as ‘under 1,500kg’, so it’s light-ish, if not spectacularly so.

The reviews are relatively positive but I really hate how none of the journalists bothered to look up the actual weight (been weighed several times already, even if the weights are anything but consistent at the moment) and just quote the manufacturer's claim like well trained sheep. Kinda puts everything they ever say into question.

Yes, but it has always been like this, journalists always mention the weight of the car but doesnt bother to check what type of weight they are actually talking about. It is not the same if the car weights 1490 or 1700 kg. It seems it is only us weight-nerds that care about the accuracy in this field…

while the interior leaves me wanting something more, as an overall package, this may be at the top of the list with regards to modern mid-engined supercars. The biggest obstacle is the 911 Turbo.

I will reserve judgement until there are comparisons against the V10 Hurecan Evo and F8 Tributo. The journalists in these first reviews are biting their tongues in order to not offend Maserati’s press office.

Agree, history shows that these first short tests normally are much more positive than later deeper tests.

Most reviews have been really positive, the ride and handling balance and steering seems to be its high point and the performance from the V6. The exhaust note is mixed some videos sounds ok but then others sounding a bit constrained. It seems most of the journalists like the minimalist interior as well. The price also seems to be a negative factor, I think its priced too close to the Ferrari 296 (with hugely more power) and Lambo Huracan.

I like it, it looks really nice and I also dig the minimalist interior. It probably also looks better in real life than in pics.

Finally saw the MC20 today. I passed it on the motorway and it drove behind me for 15min to a car meet.
-It's less underwhelming than some photos suggest.
-The front end is the best angle. It's fuss-free and the unique portrait lights create the illusion of a much wider car. If you didn't know, you could mistake it for a hyper car.
-As a "new born" mid-engined exotic, it has a unicorn aura about it. Many people at the car meet were excited to see it with whispers and finger pointing seaming here and there.
-The side profile is distinctive and well executed!
-Rear: This is the weakest area. On the motorway I initially mistook it for a Mclaren. The rear design is simply generic.

Conclusion: Beautiful car if you want something different but to me it lacks the sexiness or exoticness of a Lambo or Ferrari. Maserati needs to spice it up with more exterior carbon, aggressive alloys or creative livery. However, like the SF90 it's missing magic because it's powered by a V6. The engine bays of both these cars look dull compared with previous Ferraris that have engine mounted higher up with lots of metal and carbon fibre!

NOTE: The MC20 owner also brought his AMG Black Series and GT2 RS.
