Cooper First Spy Shots : 2013 MINI Cooper

Mini Cooper (2001–present), also called: Mini John Cooper Works (2008–2024), Mini Hatch (2001–2024), Mini Hardtop (2001–2024), Mini One (2001–2022).
@EnI , will the next-generation 1 Series use the same UKL platform that will underpin the F56 or a second generation version?

New Spyshots including a closer look at the front of the car and interior.

Starting with the front this gives a better indication of how the front of the car looks especially with those raked back headlights.
If you look at the headlights you have the outer chrome rim and then you have the exposed metalwork Porsche 911 style as the headlights are pushed further into the wings for a more sportier appearance and of course perfect evolution but in a more egg or rugby ball shape.
If you look at the outline it aligns to the grille so it does not look out of proportion as the initial scoop photographs were kind of absent of this detail , because of the distance and the color of the actual car.

The interior again is evolutionary but with a bit more maturity. Although some ideas keep the youthful image of the MINI intact and that in this Cooper S example , some sporty aspirations have been included . For example the race like rev counter at the side of steering wheel instruments, shapely auto transmission stick and Carbon esque trim. One thing that is evident is the quality of the new MINIs switchgear.
As MINI is a youthful car, the central display unit around the rim contributes to MINIs ambient lighting option, which will even interact with the car.

Stay tuned for some last minute Preview MINI news related to IAA.

I hope they've improved the quality of some of the plastics and buttons.... That was the biggest let down for me when I drove the last pre update model....

Do you see the imprint of the headlight shape in the actual metal?
This pushes the headlights back - Porsche style but aligns to the grille giving the car a balanced facia , this could not be seen on some of the previous pictures. Also not seen is the rising glasshouse and sloping rear roof giving the new MINI a more dynamic outline.

They are also filming in Tokyo too, as both the LA show and Tokyo show will host the world debuts of the new MINI.

If you want to know what's going on with the new MINI?
Then here is probably the best and most comprehensive report on the new MINI where it covers everything to performance , efficiency and weight. ( All-new MINI is lighter than the current MINI = More fun)

http://www.motoringfile.com/2013/09/29/mini-unveils-f56-new-engine-transmissions-we-go-hands-on/

The new MINI is going to ROCK!!!!

Still processing this...

Don't quite know what to make of it. Part of me feels that there's too much going on at the front whilst the rear doesn't seem to move the game on as much. I'm sure that the interior will define the step-change for the new car together with the new engines (hey BMW-MINI how about getting ready to put that new ZF 9 Speed transverse automatic in there?) and improved rigidity.

Will the new generation MINI be lighter than its predecessor?

With an all-new Mini hatchback just around the corner, the BMW-owned British carmaker has revealed technical details about the upcoming generation.
The most important announcement regards the engines, with the new car to debut a new generation of powerplants that will “optimize the balance between driving thrills and fuel consumption yet again”, according to the automaker.
The all-new Mini hatch will be the first to use both three- and four-cylinder engines, that the carmaker says will set “new standards in terms of output, performance, comfort and reliability.”
Mini hasn’t revealed output or performance specs of the engines, but confirmed the 1.5-liter displacement of the 3-cylinder engine and the 2.0-liter displacement of the 4-cylinder unit. Both engines are twin-turbocharged and feature direct injection, with the larger engine most likely to be used by the Mini Cooper S.
Mini said its future models will continue to favor sporty, agile handling and announced the introduction of electrically adjustable dampers - a first for the brand. The electric control of the damper valves will allow the system to vary the nature of responsiveness to uneven road surfaces. Mini says the dampers will have two characteristic curves for adjustment that can be activated at the touch of a button.

Drivers will be able to choose between a “decidedly sporty” drivetrain setting or a more balanced and comfortable setting.

That's not correct. Both engines have a single turbocharger.

I think people and journalists alike need the Twin-Power course again. You did it before remember? I just can't remember in which thread:dead::D

The MINI brand is possibly the best proof that downsizing can still be massive fun. And with today's announcement, downsizing to a MINI will be even more fun and even more economical. For starters, the future MINI line-up will be getting the latest "Twin Power Turbo" three and four cylinder engines from BMW, with a 1.5l and 2.0l displacement respectively. Both engines feature direct fuel injection, variable camshaft control on both the intake and outlet sides (dual VANOS) and the more powerful versions even have BMW's fully variable valve control system, the VALVETRONIC. The diesel engines also have a turbocharger and the latest generation common rail direct injection.

Regarding the exterior design, I don't know what to think. It seems like all they did was to take the distinctive design cues from the R56 and just make them slightly bigger: bigger head lights, bigger intakes, bigger fog lights, bigger rear lights.. etc.

+1 Doc(y) and as @martinbo I cannot seem to grasp the design in general, looks girly and a bit comic also. Whilst the engines, drive train and chassis tends to be more macho and just what the Dr ordered.

MINI has that appeal that configures with both male and female demographics. When relating to MINI design it has to remain relevant to the mini/MINI design philosophy but of course it has to progress to maintain its appeal.
New MINI is an evolution but of course that was expected. But there is progress in maintaining its visual language.

The opinion of new MINI will come in person when you will be able to see the details that have not been shown in the scoop photographs.
But also the interior is more pleasant with a more quality inspired ambience but with a youthful sports driven edge to the layout and inspiration of the controls.

Oh my. In the last batch of pics, the front looks horrendous. Almost as though it's a Chinese knock off of a Mini.

BMW screwed up the front but nailed everything else, I'm looking forward to the Clubman and 4 door, I think the new front might suit them better than the 3 door.

at least to me its seems that the front and rear design suffered from cost cutting measurements. in the past generations the cooper S and the cooper had their own unique bumpers. this time both lower parts look to be adjustable. now its possible not to remove to whole bumper but only the blade surrounding the exhaust or lower front intakes. this makes it look a little unbalanced and busy. all in all i wouldn't call it an evolution - for a mini a lot has changed. the front facial expression reminds me more of the R50 (which is a good thing). the R56 was more of a smiling car.
so personally i am okay with the changes, but the car needs different bumpers - i guess JCW would do it. i just pray that the JCW parts won't clip where the S parts would go otherwise.

MINI will unveil the next-generation Cooper on November, 18 at MINI Plant Oxford and shortly after at the Los Angeles and Tokyo Motor Show.
We have seen plenty of spy shots and teasers. MINI has even confirmed the engine details for the new Cooper, which include two 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbos – a 134bhp petrol with 220Nm of torque for the standard Cooper, and a 114bhp diesel with 270Nm for the Cooper D.
The Cooper S will use a new 189bhp 2.0-litre petrol turbo.
There will be also electrically adjustable dampers for the first time and the six-speed automatic can be equipped with the same GPS-guided gear selection system as the Rolls-Royce Wraith – the system can anticipate upcoming downshifts based on the type of road ahead of you.
Here we have the latest spy shots showing the Cooper and Cooper S with main disguise around the lights.
The Cooper S shows a centrally mounted exhaust, different bonnet with an air intake, different wheels and different bumpers.

2014 MINI Cooper assistance systems revealed

Model gains several new safety features

MINI has released new details about the 2014 Cooper, ahead of its debut on November 18th.
First and foremost, the model will be offered with a new head-up display that projects information onto a small folding screen on the dashboard. It can show the vehicle's speed, navigation instructions, entertainment information (ie: music track or radio channel) and various alerts.
On the safety front, there's a collision and pedestrian warning system with a city braking function. It uses a windscreen-mounted camera to monitor pedestrians and vehicles in front of the car. When the system determines there could be a collision, it provides audio and visual warnings to alert the driver. If the driver fails to respond, the car will automatically begin braking to prevent or reduce the severity of a crash.
The model will also be offered with a digital headlight assist system that automatically activates and deactivates the high-beams depending on traffic and lighting conditions.
Other notable features include a video-based active cruise control system, a rear view camera and parallel parking assist. There's also a traffic sign memory system with speed limit info and a no passing display.

MINI

Mini (stylized as MINI) is a British automotive brand founded in 1969, owned by German BMW since 2000, and used by them for a range of small cars assembled in the United Kingdom, Austria, and the Netherlands. The word Mini has been used in car model names since 1959, and in 1969 it became a brand in its own right when the name "Mini" replaced the separate "Austin Mini" and "Morris Mini" car model names.
