X5 M / X6 M First press reviews: BMW X6 M

The X5 M is the high-performance variant of the X5. In April 2009, the X6 M version was announced, with a 408 kW (547 hp) version of the BMW S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first vehicles from BMW M GmbH to have xDrive all-wheel-drive system and automatic transmissions, and are also crossovers as opposed to passenger cars.
oh my oh my!!! , exactly what I feared.

Autocar- "While the likes of the M5 and M3 offer distinct and special driving experiences relative to the cars they’re based on – experiences that challenge and engage with experienced drivers as well as thrilling novices – the X6 M just doesn’t. It feels like an X-Drive 50i that’s been given a little more power. And, for a proper M car, that isn’t good enough. BMW’s M division doesn’t make many bad cars, but it’s missed the target here alright."

they are very conservative....I wonder how many laps they really drove the car....It's definitely more than the 50i, WITHOUT A DOUBT.

An M car at 2,380 Kg. Glory forbid.

bmwblog - call me a spoil sport but at these types of launches it's the manufacturer that determines the number of laps alloted to the respective publications. So totally unsuited for track work as this juggernaut is, I am certain that more laps would've revealed further shortcomings than talent.

But anyhow, don't take my inconsequential word for it folks, lets wait for the stalwart ambassadors of M cars past - EVO and DR - to have their say.

Given the high ground clearance, monstrous weight and automatic transmission, the X6-M would impossibly measure up to the more thoroughbred M-cars, the M5 and M3. Buyers won't really mind because no one sign up for a Cayenne Turbo, ML63 or X6-M because they want a sports car. All they seek is a powerful SUV with sporty characteristics.

I am a SUV/SAV Enthusiast/owner AND I am not the only one on this planet.
These SAV M's are for those of us who wants a SAV M. BMW gave me and thousands of there customers what they wanted, PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

I for one give a damn what any of the press think becuase it's their own opinion and personal thoughts and tastes, just like my own taste etc.

The buyers of these X-M's will buy them as BMW M made them, whether this or that or whatever....They are in production for a certain customer with the need for this car and for the same reason the 5er GT was conceived.

Just as anybody else that is entitled to their opinion, I am entitled to my own.......THIS X-M's is perfect for those who are going to drive them and they will be satisfied owners! M5 and M3 buyers would not be interested anyway!

So what’s the final verdict then?
It’s not great. Sure the X6 M’s quick – how could it not be with 547bhp? – but it’s no driver’s car and certainly not something to take out on the track. The lesser X6s are much better to drive as even if they’re a little slower on paper, you’re unlikely to notice the difference on the road.

To be honest, we’re struggling to see the point of the X6 M – short of a straight-line drag race, it’s not that good at anything. BMW should stick to doing what it knows best with its M cars and not dilute the brand any further. We only hope the new M5 is going to be a return to form.

:eusa_clap Absolutely correct. There is a need for this car, people will buy them and they will live up to customers expectations.

Doesn't change the fact that it's a kak M car though.

Motoring press....they always think they are so smart don't they!?

Dilute a brand when it's top SAV's get M treatment???? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Stupid f@#$n statement HAHAHAHAHAHA

Now BMW AG....What about an M7????? Just to really stir the emotions!
I would just LOVE IT!....OH! And make an M7 with X-Drive and DPC...PLEASE!!!!!

As far back as the E53 era BMW customers, forums and car magazines alike wondered why BMW did not make a M version of their SAV's. BMW did a mudane and very successful version with the 4.8is.
They have made another X5 4.8iS. That is for sure.

Now they made the real deal - X5 & X6 M. True to M. Tradition, engineering progress, true undiluted performance etc. is what BMW Motorsport do! And they did it with the X-M's. They WILL sell and satisfy those who have the money to en joy BMW in its purest form...

Time will tell, but I think most people who are used to what M does will disagree. This is not M tradition. This is not BMW is its purest form.

The M-badge was probably not used because BMW wanted to, but more because they had to. We all love the prestige of suffix/prefix such as M, RS, AMG and Turbo. People love labels, especially on expensive things so for this car to be an easy sell like the Cayenne Turbo, BMW had to use the M badge. It was a pure marketing decision.

BMW has done what it said it would never do and made M versions of its SUVs – the X5 M and the X6 M. And we’ve just driven the more expensive – and less practical – of the two, the £77,425 X6 M.

meh, nothing to write home about and I doubt the opinions are going to vary as the car gets handed across to the different magazines. Its heavy and hardly any different from a normal X6 50i. Definitely a diluted ///M.

Another reason why I prefer those highreeving engines and Im not alone it appears.

Carmagazine - "It also sounds pretty rubbish, the V8 emits a deep grumble but it’s not going to raise the hairs on the back of your neck like an M3 or M5 can."

Sorry GCF members but thse SUV M are only here to bring money to BMW but they will never be a real M.

I´m with you on everything you´ve said, but Don´t you think these issues you talk about are because of the engine and not because it is an SUV?.

I wonder how this car would have done with the E60 M5 engine.

I am annoyed by the motoring press ALWAYS. When you get your hands on a X6 M Sayyaaf you can report from the customer's point of view!

I know these X-M's are going to give pleasure to those who CAN afford it!

People are annoyed because of a badge .. interesting ..
From a mature and rational perspective, yes Sayyaaf - it is just a badge.

But, seeing that this is place for car enthusiasts and not accountants (no offense anyone) where people come together to share their passions for the joy of owning, driving, appreciating and desiring cars.

The M is now less of a badge and more of a symbol for the expression of passion, performance, precision, fulfilment of driving pleasure; a foundation that has been laid down for many years with a very specific approach and consistently predictable results. The end result always culminated in a driver's tool that was as bidding on a spectacular country road as it was on an open circuit. Great cars that promised great rewards to the passionate motorist. Cars that became an extension of one's driving ability.

Sure, the M ethos isn't lost - there are plenty of future M cars that will come along and adhere to the tried and tested formula. Nevertheless, it's a pity that fans of the existing M ethos have to put up with Efficient Dynamics and Save the Planet babble only to have to endure the completely contradictory and unnecessary exploitation of a badge by these two behemoths.

Doesn't change me from wanting my Z4 M Coupe though.

Then they have to live by the consequences of that decision.

If this had been badged the X6 xDrive60i M Sport or X6 xDrive60iS then the reviews, without a doubt, would have been better. By sticking the M badge on it BMW were raising the expections of the journalists too high, and therefore they were not met.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
