X5 M / X6 M First press reviews: BMW X6 M

The X5 M is the high-performance variant of the X5. In April 2009, the X6 M version was announced, with a 408 kW (547 hp) version of the BMW S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first vehicles from BMW M GmbH to have xDrive all-wheel-drive system and automatic transmissions, and are also crossovers as opposed to passenger cars.
Ok, that is a reason. But do you really think the BMW will change something that works just to stop some one from saying that?

No, I don't think BMW will change anything just for the hell of it. No chance. At lease not now that they have ventured into SUV land. They know very well what is expected of the product and it is not much when it comes to driver involvement and satisfaction, at least in the M way we are used to.

On the other hand, I don't think those who buys the X6M was cross-shopping for a M3. They know they will get something else than a traditional M product.

Relax guys, I was just trying to get behind why JM was clamoring for a change even before the tests say something/anything is wrong with the car's suspension.

and you are not in the position to tell me not to write here and there :eusa_thin

Testosteron coming up again with 'moderater' below your name?
Where did I tell you what you have to do? It was merely a suggestion, because now we AGAIN have a full page discussing the point of the X6 M and if it's a real M car or not, while that clearly wasn't the intention of this thread.

Oh well, go ahead, like I care. I'll shift through the nonsense and read what actual testdrivers think of the car :)

Yes, the initial report is pretty sweet - as expected! The X6 is a true M-car as the report stated. I knew BMW M would not dissapoint on the X-M series becuase they had a point to make and hardcore customers to satisfy as well as winning new customers for the brand.

It would be interesting to hear from Sayyaaf when he spots the new X5 & X6 M's in the UAE. The UAE is a Cayenne kingdom.....:D

lol you know UAE is the kingdom of all kind of SUVs ... from cheap Suzukis to the dam expensive Cayenne Magnum techart ... its in their blood, any guy before getting his driver license dreams of owning a Nissan Patrol or a Toyota Landcruiser .. it is stupid if you ask me and I personally been through that phase :D :D

Well currently I believe the RR Sport is on top of the sales chart, Cayenne and X5 close second.

Looking forward to personally testing this car ...

Well it does make sense if you live in a desert-like enviroment. A big SUV pretty much is the logical choice over there, unlike cramped European cities....

As far back as the E53 era BMW customers, forums and car magazines alike wondered why BMW did not make a M version of their SAV's. BMW did a mudane and very successful version with the 4.8is. Now they made the real deal - X5 & X6 M. True to M. Tradition, engineering progress, true undiluted performance etc. is what BMW Motorsport do! And they did it with the X-M's. They WILL sell and satisfy those who have the money to en joy BMW in its purest form, the changes made at BMW M can ONLY be described best by their own engineers. THESE CARS DELIVER ON PERFORMANCE AND HANDELING that is the core value of M!

I just love BMW and the desicion makers at BMW AG and BMW M for the SAV M's. They are what the customer and fans alike expected......
THE FASTEST SUV's (SAV's) ON THE PLANET!:usa7uh::bowdown:

And with all the legislation on emissions etc. beleive you me, these could be the last....So?....ENJOY REAL BMW WHILE YOU CAN!!!!!!!!!!!:t-cheers:

@ the test drive event some Russian journalists came out with a question if the X6 M & X5 M would be available in armored version as well - since there is a huge demand for armored version of X5 in Russian market.

:t-crazy2:

Yes, armored M cars ... that's the real solution for the mafia around the world. Bullet-proof & superfast - to escape from assassins.

:eusa_doh:

The M spokesperson @ the event almost choked when he heard the question. Not to mention - reported -all the rolling eyes of the other press people present there.

Geez.

BMW Fan Club Free for All! Yeehaah!

Where do I sign up? Huh huh? [Looks shiftly left-right and grabs the nearest empty lager bottle by the neck]

I'm with Just_me on this. What is it about the BMW X6M (and more so the X5M) that leaves me so... cynical? I, for one, a long time BMW admirer, aspiring M-car owner, keen enthusiast and spirited driver hold M cars in the highest esteem. For me, there's a big distinction between "Engineered by the M Brand" and "Engineered for the M Badge". Why am I left with the impression that, in regard to the X6M, the latter is more the case?

It's not my fault of course. You're not going to turn around and tell me that BMW were actually lying to me all these years gone by? Sure, I understand and appreciate progress as much as anyone - but slapping an M badge on this is unnecessary and short-sited. Like others have said in this forum - why not be more subtle with the naming? Call it an X6 M-Sport Package.

Of course, it'll drive brilliantly and it'll be fast as the dickens and, as SUVs are now a real and covetable segment in their own right, it's an obvious and justifiable move. If cars like the Cayenne GTS / Turbo S and ML63 AMG exist then why shouldn't BMW capitalise off a hot, pinnacle SUV model? Well of course they should - in fact, they'd be mad not to. The SUV has come into its own as a prestige purchase.

Still, don't expect me to admire or desire this, indeed, silly car.

LOL Very true Sayyaaf! On my visit to the inlaws in Al Ain and the UAE, the Toyota VX cruisers were in their millions and I saw my first Tundra's there. I love the UAE being a real SUV kingdom.

That said, I for one can not wait for you to get behind the wheel on a X-M, wich would you prefer to drive the X6M or X5M?

lol Klier you are talking about UAE as if it has not evolved into cramped cities ... man look at Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Sharjah almost every day from 6 am till 9 pm. it will take you hours to pass few miles ...

You are right in a sense that people love to buy "the most complete tool" I mean they have their SUVs when heavy 4LO gearing is required .. but as a matter of fact most of owners they barely know driving in the desert.

Thats why when first ML generation came, then X5 and so on and so forth, people really digged those cars since it can do "logically" anything they want to. They prefer it to sedans even for long stretches of highways.

It has nothing to do with being a Moderator but I understand as a hardcore super fan its difficult to see others complain on their beloved ones.
I like your last part, just read pass the things you dont want to see, thats a great decision Klier. Thumbs up. :usa7uh: Now the haters can continue discussing their opinions.

I believe they are quite similar ... BuT indeed I'll be testing the X6M, I'll benchmark it with my X635i ...

Sounds good to me, for two reasons

1. X6 is already a heavy car, making it heavier, no harm done
2. X6M is not a real M car.

Go ahead, give them a armored X6M :eusa_clap:bowdown::usa7uh:

Thought so! My choice would be naturally the X6M. Now you will be the one to tell me how slow and underpowered my X6 35i is after you have tasted the power of M LOL....

If the South-African economy holds I will buy a X6 50i in the not too distant future...the
X6 M would just be too expensive here....

^^ X6 50i with M pack and 449 hp sounds pretty good I'd say :D

Ok, touché back! Let's continue then.

lol Klier you are talking about UAE as if it has not evolved into cramped cities ... man look at Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Sharjah almost every day from 6 am till 9 pm. it will take you hours to pass few miles ...

Yes I know. But still, most of these cities have been designed with cars in mind from the beginning, unlike almost all European cities where people used horses when the built the cities/villages/towns ;)

And there is ample free space to go off road in the sand....

Autocar - first drive

Here’s the critical question: does it drive like a proper M car? Has BMW’s famous Motorsport team somehow given birth to an SUV that, for all its zeitgeist-confounding inappropriateness, can slice through a long, third gear right-hander with the pace, poise and balance of a rear-driven performance saloon? If it has, all may be forgiven.

BMW X6M (2009) new CAR review

BMW has done what it said it would never do and made M versions of its SUVs – the X5 M and the X6 M. And we’ve just driven the more expensive – and less practical – of the two, the £77,425 X6 M.
So what are the stats then?

The X6 M has a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 with a common exhaust manifold – a world first – that produces a significant 547bhp and a thick 501lb ft slug of torque available throughout most of the rev range. The run to 62mph takes just 4.7sec and top speed is a limited 155mph – though if you opt for some BMW Driver Training as part of a special M Driver’s package, it’ll get raised to 175mph. That's crazily fast for a 2.4-tonne SUV...
Pretty impressive numbers, but how does it feel on the road?

Fast for sure, but not mind-blowingly so. You have to use the Launch Control System – yes really, an SUV with launch control – to hit that acceleration time from standstill. However, it’s the mid-range surge that’s most impressive. Plant the throttle in any gear and the X6 M hunkers down and throws itself forward.
Okay, so it’s quick. But M cars are more than that – how does it handle?

It’s no M3 or M5 that’s for sure, no matter how many times BMW might harp on about the X6 M being a true M car. It’s not. It’s a big, heavy SUV and unfortunately feels it when you start to chuck it about.

Part of the X6 M’s problem is just how good the lesser-engined models are to drive. I was all against the X6 when it was first announced, but was seriously impressed when I first drove one. With the X6 M though, I was let down.
Let down? How so?

The X6 M doesn’t feel as agile as the rest of the range and that’s due to the extra weight it’s carrying. It tips the scales at 2380kg – 115kg more than the xDrive50i. And that car’s no slouch either; it’ll hit 62mph in 5.4sec.

Under heavy braking the X6 M feels like it’s standing on its nose and can become a little unsettled. Punt it through some tricky corners and the weight really becomes apparent. However, there’s very little body roll to speak off thanks to the electronically adjustable dampers. There’s absolutely loads of grip, though.
What, no showboating drift antics?

Unfortunately not. The X6 M is four-wheel drive and feels it. Torque is shifted between all four of the X6 M’s wheels through the clever Dynamic Performance Control system, but it’s never fully rear-drive. Throw it too hard into a corner and the X6 M juggles the power and you end up experiencing understeer, followed by a nice neutral balance, then just tipping into slight oversteer before everything gets beautifully back in control, all without any tyre-burning drama. It also sounds pretty rubbish, the V8 emits a deep grumble but it’s not going to raise the hairs on the back of your neck like an M3 or M5 can.……

oh my oh my!!! , exactly what I feared.

Autocar- "While the likes of the M5 and M3 offer distinct and special driving experiences relative to the cars they’re based on – experiences that challenge and engage with experienced drivers as well as thrilling novices – the X6 M just doesn’t. It feels like an X-Drive 50i that’s been given a little more power. And, for a proper M car, that isn’t good enough. BMW’s M division doesn’t make many bad cars, but it’s missed the target here alright."

Going to be interesting, what the magazines are going to write about the X5 M…probably the same…

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
