The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
Not really. The E63 AMG W212 is faster than a Panamera Turbo around a race track, for example.

No you haven't. The Panamera has been faster than the E63 by a large margin in most tests. Only in one or two test has the Benz come on top. The E63 is not a superior performance saloon.

Like Kowlaski said that is the old E63. The new one only is .3secs slower than Panamera Turbo around the Hockenheim and I believe faster in another test. And I don't think there have been more than 2 comparisons between the two. Add the Panny's price tag into the equation and E63 wins hands down.

The Panamera Turbo is too ugly, too big, too heavy, too overpriced and too much underpowered. 500 hp is not going to cut it. Maybe a Panamera Turbo S in the future....

500 horsepower was an incredible figure for a "super" sports saloon 6, 5, 4 years ago, but it no longer cut the mustard these days. Even the Jaguar XFR, which I like it very much, I reckon it's somewhat underpowered with "only" 510 bhp.
I'm pretty sure Jaguar could have easily extracted 550 or 560 bhp out of the supercharged 5.0 V8. Why on earth they held back? I have no idea... hmm... a more powerful XFR-R is in the works, perhaps??? Who knows...

The Panamera Turbo is too heavy and too much underpowered. 500 hp is not going to cut it. Maybe a Panamera Turbo S in the future....
The weight for the Porsche is 1,970kg (DIN) which includes 68kg for the driver and 7kg for luggage. I don't want to disappoint you but the M5 is going to be pretty much that weight based on the weight increase for the lower F10 models.
I do agree though that 500bhp is maybe not enough and the M5 should be quicker than the Panamera Turbo.
And the Porsche is lower than the M5 so it may have a lower centre of gravity (this could be a grey area as the M5 may have a CFRP).

I don't know...if tuned right the 8 might make the cut, giving the 8th the gear for the highway cruiser to bring up the MPG numbers.

I have to give credit where it's due.. the new E63 has really had an amazing transformation from the W211. The AMG guys realised it wasn't all about hp and torque...I imagine gearing was changed, and from all accounts the chassis dynamics have been greatly improved. Great work by MB and AMG on the new E63!
As for the upcoming M5.... with the forced-induction, it's gonna have an amazing bhp/L figure, far ahead of any M5 before it, and certainly superior to its competitors. I'm not that well informed on engine output, so my question is: how is it that BMW produce an engine which achieves such high hp figures with only a 4.4L TT engine?

I think that's pretty much been confirmed by SCOTT that the new M5 will indeed have a CFRP roof.
But you do make a good point about the Panamera most likely having a lower center of gravity, but you never know when it comes to BMW and M-Division. Surprises comes standard.
