M1 BMW M1 Hommage Concept

The BMW M1 (model code E26) is a mid-engined sports car produced by German automotive manufacturer BMW from 1978 until 1981. In the late 1970s, Italian automobile manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation, but conflicts arose that prompted BMW to produce the car themselves. The resulting car was sold to the public, from 1978 until 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the first mid-engine BMW automobile to be mass-produced; the second was the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. If you go back to that comment he says it will be within the "Efficient Dynamics" Strategy which means possibly a full hybrid or part hybrid.
BMW want a car like this to be groundbreaking in every respect and the main talking points are technology , construction , lightweight materials , performance and efficiency a word that this class tends to overlook , It would be a high end performance car for tomorrow not for today, The rules are changing and BMW want to be the manufacturer who change the rules in this respect.
A fully fleged hybrid BMW exclusive performance car fills more headlines than another fifteen minute Supercar this time from BMW.

I have been reading some of the comments from the (in the know???) media
and they say the same thing over and over again R8 competitor , prelude to production , BMW running scared because of Audi...
Well now you have the R8 - what happens when the Mercedes SLC comes along-all modern technology , superior performance with the proposal of the media and totally outclasses the R8 - what then? R8 is yesterdays news , Then the Ferrari baby arrives again what if outclasses the SLC , SLC is yesterdays news the cycle will repeat itself.
A cycle BMW do not wish to be part of . hence why when Mercedes,Audi and Porsche were developing their models - BMW invested their R&D in "Efficient Dynamics" And expanding their product line.

Thank you for your commentary. Are you confirming the end of BMW competing in the horsepower wars? Some are saying that the current M line-up is likely the peak in terms of hp output we will see.:t-hands:

I pray this is not the case.

I think i really like this car alot..:D
If this and the CS wich i loved is indications to future BMW´s then i might have to jump to the other camp..haha

I love it too, and it is great to see you like it too

How MikeJ can say this looks like a mid 90s showcar is seriously beyond me. This looks like a BMW from the 22nd century, insired by a classic. It's perfect.

Some history:

Back in 1972 BMW presented the 'Turbo', a design and technology study which never was meant to make it into production (to the right in the pic above), but 6 years later the M1 has been launched.

In 2008 BMW presents the M1 Homage, a design and technology study which is not meant to make it into production...

Over 30 years ago the motivation for the Turbo was security, a big aspect of the 70s. Reading Scott's statements now the motivation would be efficient dynamics. It all makes sense (ok, I want it to make sense).

Best regards, south

An amazing futuristic job indeed, 2 thumbs up for this marvelous piece of art ...!

Lot of interesting design details and few bad ones too. I like the front and the rear, but the side treatment is messy, especially towards the rear wheel.

Now that's a surprise!
hmm.. I really am not sure whether I like it it or not.. I know that I love the rear design (except the black diffusor), but the rest seems to be over the top.. overstyled. I really hope this isn't going to be an indicator od BMW's future models.
And I'm really dissaponted with that kidney grill! I'd have expected something far more spectacular than that off-the-shelf grill.
interestingly (not quite sure whether it was intended) the car has some Italian flavour, just like the old one which was designed by Bertone (the production M1 was designed by Giugiaro though).

i cant say i like it, nor can i say i hate it..

but i think i'm leaning more towards the i dont like it...

i do like path in design when it comes towards there rear led lights

Wow I like it a lot. I say bring on a M1 but maybe not as radical like this concept. However, I like this design study, at least most of it. +500hp and low weight and Im all for it.

I am also ambivalent about the design. It kind of reminds me of the reaction people had when Lamborghini showed the model of the Miura a couple of years ago. The Miura certainly drew attention, but it was deemed to be to much of a derivative of the original Miura with precious little new ideas injected into it.

The BMW M1 Hommage is headed to the same path I'm afraid. Too much of a derivative of the original M1.

I was hoping that if BMW was going to do a new Supercar, it would be really be something new and exciting. But the M1 Hommage leaves me wanting for more............................

But BMW has at least made a mid-engine car! BMW should also have the courage to junk all the 'eco-friendly' items. This is going to be an ultra-low volume image-building model and it will have zero impact on the environment. Just give us a good old fashion mid-engine supercar that goes like stink and goes around corners as if its on rails.

One last thing, please build it in Right Hand Drive also!

FOR GOD'S SAKE IT'S A HOMMAGE - A TRIBUTE TO THE ORIGINAL M1.

Of course it is "M1 derivate". Homage is a derivate by meaning.

And, btw - M1 Hommage Concept is just a shell: w/o engine & other relevant stuff. :usa7uh:

And again:
M1 Hommage does not showcase any future BMW plans or ideas regarding BMW supercar.
It only refers to the past not the future!

H2R Concept & California Spyder Design Study have much greater agenda, while M1 Hommage is future-agenda-less.

Somebody is really pissed off...:D

Lovely car and nice to remember where we came from...:eusa_clap:usa7uh:

:t-cheers:

I think your kind of talking out your ass here..
look at these 2 photos..

the rear lights kind of remind of eachother when it comes to shape..
and they have the same look/tech..
and i think someone said that the CS will inspire future BMW´s
so ofcourse its a hommage..but it has some hints of future bmw´s..
If not then its pointless

OK, I see a HUGE LACK in GENERAL KNOWLEDGE what the HOMMAGE is. Not only here, but in other forums / blogs as well.

Hommage is often pastiche of retro & futurism (or at least contemporarism). So, imitating a past work within a current or future context.

M1 Hommage is a typical hommage. Paying tribute to M1 - using its shape & details, yet within current styling theme.

BMW Coupe Mille Miglia 2006 concept was done in the same way. Retaining retro shape, while styling was contemporary (flame surfacing, LEDs etc).

Of course styling theme is contemporary (or even futuristic - eg. "metal origami" interior design in MM 2006).

And to me new tech L-shaped tail light LEDs are very contemporary, not futuristic (hint: E90 FL, E89 Z4, F01 / F01 7er etc ...).

So, do not expect such a car (M1 Hommage) to be realized ever in such a shape, but styling is showing the contemporary solutions (broken character line & new tech LED L-shaped taillights).

:t-cheers:

I perfectly understand what an hommage is Eni, but are you seriously saying this car's without a future? I'm sure we will see details of this in next gen BMW products. You always see details of concepts back in future cars.

Ermm... I surprised to see all of the hate. I think it looks stunning.

ofcourse..who is saying that they will make an identicall looking production car..
its heavily influenced by the M1 hence HOmmage..
but we who like it can still have some hope to see some of it in future BMW´s
meaning details and not the general shape..

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
