I wouldn't be so sure that the M1 isn't going to be there. I suspect it will be, despite what BMW Blog has said. Remember, BMW Blog is increasingly part of the BMW "machine".

If it isn't then it makes these posts by Scott VERY misleading indeed and highlight my problem with allowing creative marketing to be so active on this forum:

This is a thread about the future product range of M.

"The M3 Coupe and Cabrio along with the M3 GTS will be on show @ Geneva along with an X5-M (Swiss market preference) , No M6 or M5 will be shown but there is room for 1 more."

The product range of BMW M GmbH for spring 2010

Look at the way Scott has written "1 more". Not "one more". But "1 more". Obviously the intention here is to make us think it's the M1 Concept.

And then in this thread, Scott posts on the 5th February when the press release will be. Tomorrow in fact:

"M1 will follow the same procedure as the E92 Concept , pictures released on press day".

I spoke with someone from BMW M last Monday and he guaranteed me that there will be no "M1" whatsoever in Geneva. I would be very very surprised if it would be there...

BMW simply can't enough stress how insignificant this model is. It will probably hit the market without any prior notice and there will be no information at the dealers :D

:usa7uh:
And M1 is coupe. :)

Still wouldn't that be a bit of a problem? We'll get a brand new 1series next year and yet the coupe will still carry on. While the coupe won't be updated yet, the coupe is still largely similar to the hatch, and no doubt it will have (comparably) outdated lines against the hatch... timings are kinda wrong.. could they just be working on a next generation 1series M instead? I mean it's pretty useless to revive interest in the 1series coupe when a next generation 1series hatch is already in the showrooms.. interior/exterior/under bonnet everything will simply be prev. gen.

I'm able to share some information SCOTT thankfully provided:

It turns out that the BMW board members drove an M1 prototype earlier this week and asked for siginificant changes due to some problems affecting the car as well as changes to the car including more weight reduction and a new Brake Energy Recovery System.

If I understand this correctly, these changes will affect some of the power output of the car (read: it will get more power) which also confirms that an power boost for the M3 will be imminent in 2012.

Another significant factor that played a role to this decision was the current economic climate, which made BMW feel that it should put the focus on products coming to the market soon. There are several production models arriving at Geneva for market introduction, hence it is important for BMW to focus on products which are about to go on sale.

But, there's always an upside to such decisions and in this case, it's that BMW has extra time and an extra budget to do some extra work on the M1 concept before its initial introduction.

When's the M1 concept being shown then, you ask? Well, the most safe bet would be on an appearance at the Paris Motor Show in Autumn with some, but little chances to have an eariler debut at the Beijing Motor Show. An appearance in Beijing would make sense as China has become a growing and important market for M products.

Finally, the production version of the M1 will arrive early in 2011.

While I am all for the car getting more power and loosing more weight, I call bs on the "board member drove the car and decided to not show it at the Geneva" crap. They were going to show the concept at Geneva not the final product. They could have always kept on improving it despite showing the concept. They didn't even have to reveal any specs at the show like the 135TT concept from few years back. Oh, well, whatever, I guess we will see it when/if we do.

Maybe they wanted some exterior design changes. :t-hands:

Lets not hope for a China debut, at least not if it is due to China being
the biggest M market... Why? Because, before we know it, they would demand that the M1 should bedelivered as LWB and with a wooden driver's seat only :D

100% agree. Board members drove the car and decided not to show the car in Geneva, because everybody in the audience will be able to drive with every BMW on the show?
And of course, it's very easy to SEE on a car that it weighs 50 kg less than before, or has 50 hp mpre than before..... NOT!!!

Problem is, it seems like it is more important that the car looks light, than it really being light... and when they fail at making it light, they have to increase power.

Here is my prediction. Couple of months later, there will still be no M1 and we will soon hear, it is scrapped cause some "board member" didn't like it (seriosly ***, don't they have test drivers to test these things?) and this is anyway not the market for it and they should be making a hybrid cross over instead. I hope I am wrong but I won't be surprised.

Trust me, by the time a board member is able to drive such a car, it's only for fun and tradition, and everything has been set in stone already. A boards member is not going to change what engineers have put together for a very long time.

Maybe when the board was populated by racing drivers and the company driven by delivering driving pleasure :D

Agree.

This information from South, "that SCOTT thankfully provided" (give me a break with kissing his derriere), is beyond the pale.

But don't despair, the fountain of kool-aid will once again flow, in the not-to-distant future, for those who thirst.

I just watched the bmw press conference.

My word a boring 1 serie a boring mini and 2 boring 5 series etc nothing that touches my emotion with the brand bmw.

I think the time is getting right for change to a sportier brand. The green agenda and efficent dynamics is so extremely overdone. Driving a bmw was always an emotion. But this i can t take it anymore.
