The BMW 1 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2004. Positioned as the entry-level model in BMW range of products, the first generation was produced in hatchback, coupé and convertible body styles.

German ED-plates are different. They look like normal german plates (except some minor differences). US-Army members also have German plates (mostly beginning with HK-...).
I think it's a guy from the US who bought his car in Germany and takes it to the US when he goes back (same with the boss of my Girlfriend - he's driving around with a 645 convertible (with NYC-plate) in Munich.
