Concept BMW Concept Active Tourer

Future car concepts, design studies, prototype vehicles, emerging technologies, and previews of what may come next.
Maybe I'm wrong, but this BMW Concept must be a fair bit longer (especially at the front) than the B Class in order to have these proportions.

BMW Active Tourer: 4,350mm x 1,834mm x 1,560mm x 2,670mm (wheelbase)
MB B-Class (W246): 4,359mm x 1,786mm x 1,557mm x 2,699mm (wheelbase)

Regarding the proportions ... 20" wheels do help a lot. ;)

Yet mind BMW FWD cars share UKL platform with next generation MINI cars - and MINIs are known for short front overhangs despite being FWD. So, no wonder Active Tourer features great proportions. Expect next gen. MINIs, BMW sub-1er, next X1 & next 1er to feature great proportions as well - despite being FWD.

This is not a "martinbo" kind of German car to be a fan of. I understand the business case and the economic rationale behind it.

And given that I'm quite enamoured with, what I deem to be proper BMWs, cars like the 3er and 5er - I suppose I'm fairly entitled to say that I despise this little breadvan. Hope it makes good profits.

For what it is, I couldn't imagine this type of car looking any better. The production car via spy pics looks MUCH more bland, homely, and generic-horrible, so unless they're using some masterful chamo tactics, I think this is just popping smoke and the real thing won't look nearly as cunning.... we'll see.

Judging this Concept though.... really perfect for what it is. The B-Class looks terrible enough already, and completely sh*t with this now in the picture. BMW are just on another level from M-B design wise it starts to seem, and every new model we see, increases that seeming-fact.

On another note, I'll never forgive BMW for going down the route of FWD Minibus. I just hope we don't get it in the States, BMW got famous for their dynamic, focused existence on Luxo-Sport cars, this only throws a wrench in that, no matter how good it is.... for what it is.

For what it is and suppose to be in other words a MPV it looks pretty damn stunning! Simple reason it looks BMW-sporty!

Just keep it looking like that with the production version PLEASE! We do not want a M-B CLA dejavu;)

I mean it looks good for what it is, much better than a B class and I'm sure this is a very correct BMW interpretation of a car like this, but imo, a car like this simply doesn't fit BMW, i don't know, a mini van simply isn't BMW, or a BMW shouldn't be a mini van. By the looks of it, personally i can feel that they tried their best to make the lines sleek, everything flows but the car like this is just too bubbly and short, the hood is also too short... well i think it gives me a hint of the Toyota Picnic.

Looks good.

But I'll wait until the production version. I was extremely disappointed how the production version of the 6er Coupe compared with the concept at Paris two years. Those subtle differences of the concept made all the difference.

The car looks good and expensive but I wait for the production car before my final opinion.

I love it! Great exterior design and i hope they won't change it much for production version... Interior is also beautiful, but i know it won't be nowhere near in production guise.

But that front is to die for! (y)

Maybe this is how all BMW GTs (3 & 5) should have looked like from the first place not like those whale hatchbacks. I hope the next 5GT will be a bigger version of this with a decent 7 seater. That's what a Grand Tourer should have been.

Btw, no more attached headlights to the grill?:watching:

Is it me or is it scream DS5 styling? Looks good though

Perhaps there is a bit of it in the bumper but not much more. However it is right up there with the DS5 in terms of design innovation. MPVs are terribly difficult to design gracefully and BMW have managed the task well. Where they managed to save the car from beng bashed is by penning a gorgeous roof line and green house. You can almost mistake it for a midget SUV.

I am completely astonished.

First of all I do not accept any FWD BMW, but after all BMW has done in these recent years, I do not expect anything more/less, when even Porsche is now going a similar route.
The creator of this segment was Mercedes with the A Class. Also a blasphemy, but apparently the Mercedes crowd accepted it better than does the BMW crowd. Audi followed with the A2 but it failed, now it is again it will again be back. Lancia in some ways is yet the leader in this category with the Musa, though with FIAT quality. Citroen now came with the DS4 and DS5. So BMW with the F.A.S.T is the last to come the game. But I approve the way they do it. BMW does not follow directly, it adds a lot more, so I have to give credit to that. Example are the BMW i8 and the BMW GranCoupé.

Ok, this car is almost perfect, but that is because it is a concept. Nonetheless I am surprised by how good this car looks, and even more for a BMW FWD MPV. Overall it really looks very sporty, and knowing how good Minis drive, I doubt this one can't be as good. Theoverall shape reminds the B Class, previous generation, but even more dynamic. Interior design has 1 Series/3 Series styling and layout, but IMO in a much better execution, with exception of center armrest. I also notice there is no manual hand brake, now who know whether there'll be one on the production version, but I think it is quite possible. As for the exterior, I have to say it is the best looking BMW to date. I am not talking about the concept, F.A.S.T, but only about the design elements. Side lines overall come form the CS Concept which we can now find on cars like the X1 and 6 Series. But these lines/creases are improved for a more dynamic looking, CS was more clean and sleek. Rear is clearly a BMW, like the 3 Series and 5 Series, but this time not a simple copy/paste. Front has a very good grill solution IMO, it does have a 3D grill shape, but headlights and grill are not joined together like in the 3 Series, but they are separate like in the 6 Series. That gives it a very aggressive front. Angel eyes are an improvement over the 7 Series lights, that looks like sleepy. Here they looks alert, ready to fight. Front bumper may remind some previous AMG bumpers, but it clearly is an evolution of the Z4 M package bumper with new M6 bumper styling cues.
Compared to Citroen DS cars which look very fashion, this F.A.S.T Concept looks a lot more classy, not over done like the A Class, not boring/generic like the Golf/A3, both sporty/dynamic and luxury, and does seem to have presence. In one word: perfect design.

What now? That is the irony. I said how I like the car, but that is wrong infact. I like the design. How could BMW give to the "worst" car, read: fwd, mpv, most affordable BMW, the best design possible? Couldn't the 1 Series look like it? It would blow-off all the rivals. Couldn't the 3 Series look like it? Now I am hoping the 4 Series will get all the design cues from this 1 Series Tourer, unfortunately I doubt it will get this nice grill, 3D but not linked/joined.

Of course this is only a Concept, and Production version will be watered down, both in terms of design and of interior quality, but it is good to know there is potential and at last something really new. I am sure this car will be a hit in EU especially among women. With this 1 Series Tourer, BMW will mostly get new clients that probably never owned a BMW before, thus even higher sales.

Hardly believable that BMW managed to make the worst looking car (MPV) that good looking, almost better than the whole range, and even more, retaining the BMW Identity.

BMW is chasing volume and they are going into niches with meaningful volumes and profit margins. I understand your dislike of this 'little breadvan'. It's not a true BMW.

As you, I also don't like the concept of a FWD MPV BMW, but from a design point of view I love what BMW did. But now I have to admit I don't really hate this concept of FWD MPV BMW that much, as BMW has done many other things I dislike, so this doesn't hurt much more, and thanks to the good design I think it now does even better.
We like the same cars, so you must know if you want to see a Z2 Coupé one day, BMW needs to built this F.A.S.T. I just hope money won't make them forget our Z2.

So is this just a 5 seat vehicle? Will it carry 7 passengers at all or will there be a separate model for that?

For the segment, just perfect. BMW did re-write the book on a normally bland segment. Btw great write-up Levi68!(y)
