The E is the hands-down clear winner here styling wise IMO
I dislike the rear lightbar and star shape details, and the headlight shape on the E class; but overall, looks like a Mercedes/premium car.

The 5er on the other hand, is a fuxxing Peugeot:

I agree with your opinion on the E. Of the front and rear were less fussy, may have been one of the best looking 4 doors in recent history

I don`t like the fake lightbar either, nor do I like the graphic in the taillights of the E. They look like triangle emergency vehicle hazard indicators.
The dashboard with the surfboard theme is obviously Jaguar S-Type inspired. I can add that to my dislike list with the HVAC vents.
As a package though the E has the 5er beat IMO. Its the small details that make the E look more sleek, understated, and sophisticated.
The rear glass panel for example with the rounded corners looks like it is molded into the bodywork on the E. The same can be said for the 3/4 window into the C-Pillar. The 5er with its squared-off rear glass panel already looks dated and will not age well in the years to come.

I dislike them both but obviously the Merc sucks way more.

Round or squared off glass panels are the least of the problems these cars have. Wish we could nitpick details like that, but they seem so insignificant on the grander scale.
Personally, I think the round glass looks nice on Benzes but would be ridiculous on a BMW design which isn't meant to look like a sculpted bar of soap.

It's so obvious to me the fake lightbar is a place holder, so they can give it a lightbar for the facelift the style of the upcoming CLA taillight bar.

My point was not to say that BMW should use molded glass panels.

If you have a particular problem with the E and have the skills to write it do so, no one is stopping you.
This is the Internal Combustion thread. To me it's the details, no matter how small or large that make the entire package stand out but that is my opinion. The soap-bar theme is what gives the new E-Class its drag-coefficient superiority to the 5er.

BMW strayed too far from its originality and this is one of the reasons this new 5er just looks like crap IMO.

Jaguar S-type inspired? I‘m thinking more of a CLS-like dashboard.

No.

G60 - "The drag coefficient is 0.22–0.23 across the range"

W214 - "The vehicle retains its drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd"

According to AutoMotorundSport:
i5 40 = 0,23
520i = 0,24
i5 M60 = 0,25

Crucial for aerodynamics is not only the drag coefficient but also the frontface of the car. I can hardly imagine the taller BMW has better aerodynamics than the E. Alas, I only know the frontface of the E class.

Sad to inform you I am not as gifted in expressing myself so clearly like you do.
I have said my thing already. If you want to keep hearing the same stuff all over again non stop, subscribe to @leylandi. His broken record might suit you.

Riiiiiiight! Those rounded off windows help the drag coefficient
You have ZERO evidence of what makes the Cw work on the E class design, so stop giving false examples. It's not as simple as pointing out some design features you happen to like/dislike.

Every time I read your comments, I get the distinct impression that you're very angry.

Chill man, it's just cars.

Only at the sorry state of the German car industry at the moment. Very difficult to chill when my favorite car (the 5er) is flopping from all sides.

What bothers me is @leylandi, but he is slightly too valuable to put on ignore because I like his sales info and he's the king of sales info no matter how I twist it..... Sad times.

Ok, let me take the hit for throwing out claims about the Es drag-coefficiency. It was the end of my day shift and I kind of threw it out there. It appears that both these cars are about equal and it is like splitting hairs. If I came across as rude allow me to apologize man.
It is just a rough patch for BMW fans, its just a time for that cold drink. Believe it or not, I actually like the front from head on, it looks good IMO, the headlight design looks good to. It just falls apart when you get to the side and back IMO. The designer I believe could have done a much better job. The G30, some BMW fans here call it boring but I absolutely love that car!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe I read somewhere here that Mercedes was taking inspiration from older Jaguar models in the design room. This was some years ago. The dropping shoulder line on the previous E and the bow in the C-Pillar might have been Jaguar-inspired.
I am just guessing here.

The surfboard shape of the dashboard on the new E might have been Jaguar-inspired.
The first gen CLS had a standing wood panel as well but the shape is a bit different than that of the new E-Class interior.
Some other member also posted this as well.

**** me was the S-Type an ugly car.
I don't know, it has a lot of personality and originality, they were directly inspired by the MKII and had a lot of exposure when they launch this taking risks, but maybe it's not as good as it should have been.
It is just a rough patch for BMW fans,
lol Why? who says it? you and a couple more here?
The half a million car difference between BMW and Mercedes must be because you are right.

I think you mean to say for 5 Series fans, mate.

BMW fans are still having a fine time revelling in the best M3/M4 range in three generations, basking in the afterglow of the M5 CS being the best 4 door performance car ever made and content in the knowledge that the day-to-day, Joe Public models are class leaders.
