2 Series BMW 2er Gran Coupe Speculation

The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since the year 2014. The 2 Series was created when BMW spun-off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the BMW 1 Series into a separate series.
I just think that whether it's been officially announced, or whether it's going to be FWD or RWD, the people who matter at BMW will know exactly what drive the next generation 1er hatch will get. Of course it will already have been decided. The next gen 1er hatch is just over three years away from going on sale (if normal life cycles are anything to go by), so it won't be long before we start seeing mules.

I found the quote @Betty Swollocks

But in the long term are still 1- and 2-series on the UKL platform, right?

Nitschke: This is not said so. It is in foreseeable future of M no 2-series BMW M with front-wheel drive, that I can rule out. An M-model with pure front-wheel drive I can also exclude. I will even go one step further: I also exclude M-models with a front-biased AWD. This is for us from dynamic aspects not an option. The decision whether the 2 and the next 1 share the same platform, incidentally, has only be taken.

From October 2014

Nitschke is the M boss, btw. Not some random dude in marketing. So until I read something official about the platform of the next gen 1er hatch, everything I see and read is pure speculation.

you should check BMW Financial website and look at the different statements regarding BMW goal to increase profitability of the entry models ... and i will not direspect also but i'm not a BMW PR for you, i'm just here to share informations ... but for me it's clear that the next 1 will be based on the FWD platform ... but ask Scott27 for more "official" news

There is no info about the platform of the next gen 1er on the BMW financial website that I know of. There is no info on the next gen 1er on any official BMW page AFAIK. For me it is not clear at all.

recent press suggest that the new 1 will be based on the UKL plateform but new CEO want to keep the 2 series Coupe, convertible & Grancoupé on a modified UP35 plateform maybe scott27 could clarify the situation i'm not an insider @ BMW ;- )

Should use a modified CLAR platform for the 1er hatch too, then. But we'll see indeed.
i hope also but i'm afraid it's too late regarding the recent rumors that the new 1 sedan will be launch in 2016 and next generation of 1 hatch ending 2017

1er sedan and 1er hatch can be on different platforms like the 2er coupe and 2er GT.

And I think with the new CEO, things are looking better than before. I have this feeling he would have put the 1er sedan on a RWD platform if it was his decision, but that is obviously a gut feeling.
With the 1er sedan on UKL, we will be missing out on a small M sedan, which is an absolute shame and missed opportunity..

With the 1er sedan being FWD, i see no reason why the hatch will be on RWD. They are simply different variants, like the previous 1series hatch and 1series coupe. The new 2er GT vans are outliers, imo they shouldn't be badged 2series in the first place. Further with the upcoming X1 being also FWD, it leaves zero hope that the 1er hatch will be a RWD. How they will get away with it? AWD for everything but still lose out to the quattro A3's.
Let's hope they can stick with RWD with the 2series coupe and have more variants (a gran coupe hopefully) on that line.

The 2 series Gran Coupe will come at the end of 2019 after the next Generation 1 series hatch, which will come 3-4 month before the Gran Coupe.

Still unclear if the next 2 coupe and grancoupe will keep the rwd platform or not i remember récent news that the décision will be taken end of 2015/beginning of 2016
