2 Series BMW 2er Gran Coupe Speculation

The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since the year 2014. The 2 Series was created when BMW spun-off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the BMW 1 Series into a separate series.
I think this might be one of the re-instated projects previously dismissed.
But preliminary work was done and they do have four door F22 styling models. It looked exactly like this.

BMW just do it

So we're getting this 2 GT thing instead of a 2 GC?

That's not a bad thing. I sat in a 4er GC last week and found the headroom at the rear not be adequate for an adult. My head had to be tilted forward 30 degrees and I felt like that adding two doors to a 4er coupe is like adding a full sized door to a cottage with a roof height for dwarfs. I'm a fan of the 3er GT though. It's practical but devoid of the heavy looks of the 5er GT.

I would be excited about this car, but seeing how the difference in weight between a 2er Coupe and a 3er Sedan is only about 100lbs, I really don't see the point in it. A Grand Coupe would weigh pretty much the same as its equivalent 3er sedan. Nor would it probably be much smaller. I can't see this car not having a lengthened wheelbase compared to the 2er coupe. And given BMW's pricing strategy with the 2er and the Grand Coupes, it would surely cost more than an equilavent 3er.

If this car is made (and I have serious doubts that it will be), I just don't see it being the return to form we are all hoping for. The basic bones of the car just won't allow it.

F20. CLAR is from 3er and up, and will be introduced with the G11 7er. Next CLAR after the 7er will be the 5er. And then X7/6er.
But the question might be valid since scott (on this or the other site, or was it Eni. I am writing on the phone now and tight on time) said that the 2er GC if based on the 1 er sedan will be fwd but if it will be rwd it will be based on the clar and thus also very similar in size to the next 3er.

Really hope we get a f20 variant, or just some variant around e46 f20 size.

Ok so bmw will kept actual f20 platform for small rwd cars?

No, the Gran Coupe (if it ever materializes) will be based on a relatively old car.
And no matter what people here say, there HAS BEEN NO DECISION on wether the next 1er will be RWD or FWD.

@bilen, you're right it is a but vague. That's why I will wait until I hear/read something from BMW instead of people who think they know.

So are you saying that:
  • it has not been extensively reported on that the next 1er switches to the UKL platform
  • the spy shots for the purported 1 Series sedan are: either not of the next 1er or that the car shown in those spy shots is NOT FWD
?

Yes.

I am talking about the next gen 1er hatch btw, not the UKL based sedan.
These reports are incorrect, as no decision has been made about the platform of the next gen 1er AFAIK.

I'm pretty sure BMW know EXACTLY which platform the next 1er hatch will have. It's not that far in the future now. The people who ACTUALLY know about developments at BMW and make the decisions are not to be found on internet forums.

I'll try to find the quote. Somebody high up in the company said that some weeks ago in an interview. I don't remember where I read it and who said it.
It actually caught me by surprise because everybody on the internet seemed to be so convinced about the platform of the next gen 1er, that's why it stuck in my head.

^ No disrespect, but without a link to a PR statement from BMW that means very little to me. I haven't seen anything about the next gen 1er, anywhere.

you should check BMW Financial website and look at the different statements regarding BMW goal to increase profitability of the entry models ... and i will not direspect also but i'm not a BMW PR for you, i'm just here to share informations ... but for me it's clear that the next 1 will be based on the FWD platform ... but ask Scott27 for more "official" news
